In the season finale podcast, the producers of the show made a statement that we have seen the monster in season two, and didn't know it. They worded it very carefully.

The impression was that they were not talking about the "nano cloud" that Mr. Ekko saw, but something else.

This fueled a frenzy of idea's about what or who the monster is. Recently, a third Lost inside man, the script editor, added an extra tidbit.

I will just copy this post from another board, (credit to "I am the monster") who is a cool fellow.

PhilB: In the final podcast, Damon and Carlton hint that the audience may have been looking at the monster and not realized it. Simply put, do YOU know what they are referring to? Of course you can't tell us what they meant, but I'm just curious if you know what they mean or not.

Gregg Nations (LOST Script Coordinator): Yes, I know what they meant. They are kind of devilish to put that hint out there like that, aren't they? I can give you a further hint: they are referring to an espisode after "The 23rd Psalm." That was episode 10, so it's basically in the second half of the season. Good luck finding it. And enjoy rewatching the episodes.

Okay, so the implicaitons of Gregg's statement:

We are talking about an appearance in "AN EPISODE" - not many episodes - and that episode is in 11-23!

At first I wondered if this nixed the 'Vincent' theory, but then I believe he was only in 'S.O.S' and '3 Minutes' so I guess that's not entirely out... though if it is truly a single, specific episode, then Vincent's gone.

Possibilities it does rule out:
- ANY of the Survivors
- "Henry Gale"
- Rousseau
- Other Others
- Injections/The Vaccine itself

Still Possibilities:

- 2.11 - Others' Torches/Smoke
- 2.12 - Charlie's Visions
- 2.18 - Dave. This is still one of my favorite theories, since we know the Monster can 'read' people's pasts. But if it wanted to kill Hurley, why wouldn't it just eat him rather than try and convince him to jump off a cliff. Seems more likely this was Hurley speaking to himself in some looney subconscious way...
- 2.21 - Yemi in Locke and Eko's Visions
- 2.23 - Hurley-Bird
- 2.23 - The Crazy White Sky

The only problem with the 'Visions' theories is why would it be one set of visions and not another...

Leaving only 'realisitically': Dave (A Different kind of vision - a la Jack's Dad), the Hurley-Bird, and the Crazy White Sky...

Unless of course, the REAL monster is peer pressure.

I don't know really, but maybe the horse that Kate saw....

or the Frog that Sawyer killed.

Or the statue of the 4 toed foot.

It was in the last half of the season, we know that much.

I wonder if it's possible we saw it in a flashback scene, and it wasnt even on the Island?

If it were any of those, I'd bet on the horse, but I think it was Dave.

If it was Dave, it would mean the monster has power outside the Island, as it tormented Hurley in the real world, in his flashbacks.

Or, like another idea I read, it could mean that the monster reads your mind, so it could become whatever it wanted. That would explain Kates Horse, and Hurleys' Dave.

But I don't know yet, still seems a little thin.

I will say this. All the animals on the Island are weird and out of the ordinary.

The polar bear. (explained by the blast door map, and the orientation movie)

The hog that tormented Sawyer in season one. The Frog that tormented Sawyer in season two. The horse that Kate and Sawyer saw, from her past.

Vincent the dog.

The "Hurley Bird", which said his name in season one and season two.

The Shark with the Dharma Logo on it.

I just had a thought... from your last post, Dave.

Each animal that you're bringing up, well, it has a connection to Sawyer.

  • The polar bear.... was after Sawyer.
  • The frog... drove Sawyer nuts.
  • The dog, Vincent... in their camp, and around Sawyer.
  • The "Hurley Bird"... swooped over Sawyer.
  • The shark... we saw it, swimming around the raft (and if you were fast enough, you saw the Dharma symbol on it's tail), when Sawyer was shot, and they were stranged out there.
  • The horse... when Kate saw the horse, the second time (right?), Sawyer was there, with her, and saw it too.

It was just a thought... but, it entered my mind, so I'm sharing it.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. It would be Kate's horse, the apparitions of Walt, and Hurley's Dave, plus it could explain the second polar bear--the one that attacked Walt. But that one might not be it--it might be Walt who brought like bear, like he brought the bird in Australia.

I think it would be really cool if the monster could get in people's heads and make them see things that they were thinking about.
