Chris Daughtrey Prepares For Chart Battle With Taylor Hicks
by Mike Baron
Jun 5, 2006

American Idol's Chris Daughtrey has reportedly turned down the offer of becoming the frontman for successful rock band Fuel, according to Entertainmentwise.
He's going to go solo.

Daughtrey was offered the position almost immediately after being voted off the hugely rated TV show and it was believed at that time that he would accept. We reported that he would probably decline and consider his options.

Talking to The Charlotte Observer over the weekend he said of his future career plans: "I'm going to be doing my own thing."

Daughtrey is for the moment committed to the 'American idol' tour which is currently traveling North America. Daughtrey will reportedly announce his solo career plans over the next 60-90 days.

It's beginning to look like he and American Idol Taylor Hicks, who recently signed a record deal, will be battling it out on the charts this fall.

Hicks says he'll record an album that will be "a really good representation of who I am as an artist. There are things that I want to do creatively that I've never been able to get to do before American Idol – possibly (something) a little bit cutting-edge." When pressed what the album will sound like, Hicks gave the answer his fans want to hear. "It'll be an album with soul. It has to have a lot of feeling ... I'm going to play some harmonica and guitar," he said.

TMZ says the other Idol hopefuls are close to a deal:

'A source tells TMZ that RCA Music Group, which is home to all the past 'Idol' winners, will sign Katharine McPhee and is close to signing a solo deal with Chris Daughtry. Ace Young is also said to be in talks with the label.

Elliott Yamin has yet to land a record deal, but TMZ has learned Hollywood powerhouse management company The Firm flew the crooner to Vegas last weekend and hooked him up with tickets to back-to-back concerts by Madonna and Prince.

While this is all good news for the finalists, history shows good record sales are not guaranteed. After winning 'Idol' in 2002, Kelly Clarkson sold over 7 million CDs and won two Grammys while her first season runner-up, Justin Guarini, went on to sell less than 150,000 copies of his debut CD before being dropped by RCA.'

This guy is wrong on one front. The Idol's CD has to be out for I believe it is six months before any of the other's can release an album. It gives the Idol an advantage.
