Bush poll rating hits new low

WASHINGTON (AFP) - President George W. Bush has hit a new low in US public opinion, with just 31 percent of respondents approving of his job performance -- one of the lowest ratings ever for a US president, it was reported.

The poll conducted by the New York Times and CBS television shows the third-lowest approval rating for any president in the past 50 years, with only presidents Richard M. Nixon and Jimmy Carter viewed less favorably while they were in office, the daily reported.

The poll comes just six months ahead of US midterm elections in which Bush's Republican Party is battling to maintain control of Congress over resurgent opposition Democrats.

Just 13 percent of the 1,241 people surveyed by the Times and CBS approved of the way the president is handling rising gas prices, one of the top public concerns.

Bush also scored the lowest ratings of his presidency for his handling of foreign policy, Iraq and the US economy, while only about one-fourth of respondents said they approved of his handling of immigration issues, another new hot-button issue.

Most of the support lost by the Bush, including among his once-stalwart conservative base, seems to be over his handling of the conflict in Iraq. The percentage of respondents in the Times/CBS poll who support having gone to war fell to a new low of 39 percent, down from 47 percent in January.

About two-thirds of respondents surveyed said they had little or no confidence that Bush could successfully end the war.

Wednesday's poll numbers were in line with the 31 percent approval rating received by the president in a poll released earlier this week by USA Today and the Gallup polling organization

The USA Today/Gallup survey of 1,013 adults, which underscored the erosion of backing among Bush's core conservative supporters, showed a three percent loss of overall support for the president from one week earlier.

If ABC, CBS. and NBC would simply tell the American people that Bush is leading the charge on this flood of immigration, his rating would go right to zero overnight. Otherwise it is going to take a little longer.

Because we have nothing better to do then watch his poll numbers go down...

I would like to see a breakdown of the other 71%.

I'm sure that it would be filled with fuzziness, or things that are "top secret"

I think the 71% is composed of about 50% Democrats and 50% of people who used to be Republicans, but are not Democrats.

Bush is going to give a pro-amnesty immigration speech on Monday night, so his rating will drop another 15 points minimum overnight.

Yes, I agree with you.. and I think that he will see another huge drop in his ratings.

We need an amendment that states when an approval rating drops below a certain percentage they have to resign.

I'm sure Dubbs will make a major push and probably 'find' Osama or his #1 guy just before November to try and boost his ratings.

I don't think we need an amendment. When the popularity gets low enough, they just disintegrate. In a way, a president is nothing more than his popularity. It should be over by next Tuesday.

He just vanishes in a puff of smoke like a cheap magician.

I can't believe how stupid you people are being. The only reason the approval rating is low is because George W. WANTS it to be low. His triumphant climb back to the top of the approval ratings will be all the sweeter when the election rolls around. Especially if he HAS to climb.

Why does his rating stay in 30's? Most people I meet dislike Bush. Thats to high? Who is voting? Its time to question polls.

I think his approval ratings are low because politics has everything to do with fear and idealism, not reality. I'm not saying I approve, but I do think that most people who do approve don't vote because they don't see any point. If impeachment talk flares up again with good reason then you'll probably see a tug of war in the polls. But right now the people who are voting are unsatisfied. That's how I see it.
