Thousands march for immigrant rights |

CHICAGO, Illinois (CNN) -- Huge crowds of immigrants and their supporters packed city streets across the country Monday while leaving businesses and schools empty on what organizers said would be a nationwide "Day Without Immigrants."
From Florida to Chicago, New York to Los Angeles, hundreds of thousands of people demonstrated peacefully to protest Congress' attempts to toughen immigration laws.
Television pictures from Los Angeles and the town of Homestead near Miami showed turnout in the thousands, many people wearing white shirts as requested by organizers.
"We are the backbone of what America is, legal or illegal, it doesn't matter," Melanie Lugo, who with her husband and their third-grade daughter was among thousands attending a rally in Denver, Colorado, told The Associated Press.
"We butter each other's bread. They need us as much as we need them," she said.
Some 300,000 people marched through Chicago's business district, according to official estimates, many carrying flags and signs.
"We're not terrorists," one read.
"We build your homes," said another.
In New York, some workers walked off the job at 12:16 p.m. to symbolize December 12 -- the day a controversial bill sponsored by Rep. James Sensenbrenner, R-Wisconsin, passed in the U.S. House of Representatives.
The bill, which stalled in the Senate, would make felons of the illegal immigrants and calls for new walls on 700 miles of the 2,000-mile U.S.-Mexico border.
Farmworkers in California also downed tools, said officials from the United Farm Workers union.
The call to not work, not go to school, not go shopping was heard in many other cities too.
Diners heading to the Top of the Hill restaurant in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, were greeted by closed doors and a banner reading, "Todos somos Immigrantes! We are all Immigrants."
Proprietor Scott Maitland estimated he was likely to lose $12,000 in sales but said immigrants were an important part of his staff and society as a whole: "Our willingness to open up makes us American."
School officials in Washington, D.C., and Chicago reported higher than usual absences. Chicago schools with high numbers of Latino students were mostly empty, officials said.
In San Diego, California, Benita Olmedo told the AP she had pulled her 11-year-old daughter and 7-year-old son from school to join a march there.
"I want my children to know their mother is not a criminal," said the nanny who told the AP she came here illegally in 1986 from Mexico. "I want them to be as strong I am. This shows our strength."
The message of the day spread beyond the U.S., with some Mexicans planning to call for a boycott of American businesses in Mexico City as part of the May Day celebration there.
In Washington, a coalition of Hispanic-American groups held a news conference to stress that the protesters do not represent all immigrants.
"We understand the importance, contribution immigrants have made to the economy and the industry of this great nation," said retired Col. Albert F. Rodriguez, a veteran of World War II and the Vietnam War.
"But the difference is that we and millions of others like us did it legally. We're all here today to tell all those illegal protesters, 'You do not speak for me.' "
About 7.2 million illegal immigrants hold jobs in the United States, making up 4.9 percent of the overall labor force, according to a recent study by the Pew Hispanic Center in Washington, D.C.
Undocumented workers make up 24 percent of farmworkers and hold 14 percent of construction jobs, the study found.
Other estimates put the number of illegal immigrants in the United States at more than 11 million.
Political division
The immigration debate has split Republicans as midterm elections approach.
President Bush, taking pains to woo Latino voters to the GOP, has called for a guest-worker program and a way to legalize the status of people in the United States illegally.
A bipartisan measure backed by Sens. John McCain, R-Arizona, and Edward Kennedy, D-Massachusetts, would include the proposals Bush has advanced.
Critics have denounced any legalization plan as "amnesty" and vowed to oppose it.
A compromise Senate bill backed by Republican Sens. Chuck Hagel of Nebraska and Mel Martinez of Florida would make the legalization process tougher for illegal immigrants who have been in the country less than five years. That bill also has stalled.
CNN's Ines Ferre, Lydia Garlikov, Keith Oppenheim, Scott Spoerry, Kristi Keck and Harris Whitbeck contributed to this report.

You know, THIS upsets me! I'm born, and raised, in America. I'm a full time worker, who has been working since before I was 16 years old (though part time as a teen, still in high school), and I've ALWAYS paid my taxes. Yet, I don't get the right to marry my partner. Now, we have people that are ILLEGAL in this country, and they want rights! Well, guess what? I want rights too... and I live here, legally. I'm not a terrorist... and I've done things to help out America, with my jobs. So, I will be one very pissed off AMERICAN CITIZEN if this display of 'power' grants them anything... and let me say, I'm far from being the only one who feels such a thing.

How come they don't use that energy and numbers to protest in their own country? How come they don't demand that Mexico resolve some of its problems so that they can have a decent life there? Is that an oversimplification of the situation? It probably is. Just a thought. | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: Dreamzwalker | | My view is simple, ALL illegals need to be shipped back to their country. Doesn't matter where they are from. I would like to go to Japan and live for awhile, if i do it illegally they would put me in a box, label it, and airmail me back to the U.S.
If i wanted to live in Mexico illegally, they would either shot me, or put me in jail. Did you know that those crossing into Mexico's Southern boarder illegally are shot on sight?
There is, in tulsa oklahoma, Several areas that have been shut down due to illegals living in the areas. There is one area so bad its called "Little mexico" and someone is shot or found dead there every couple days.
In Liberty NC, there is a section of town that is now so over run by illegal Mexicans (nothing against legals here lets get that straight), that certain areas have no other races in the shopping centers. My sisters property value has actually DECREASED by 38% since illegals have moved in by stampede.
One thing is for certain, illegals need to learn English. They refuse to though. I see interviews on TV with people that claim they have lived in America for years yet the interview is in Spanish.
There is no reason I should have to learn spanish. i speak English. i do not live in mexico, therefor i do not speak Mexican - its commonsense.
Remove all the Spanish options and that would force them to learn English. As of right now, they have no reason to learn English because we accommodate them with Spanish options at the bank, with the power company, at some stores, with the cable company.
Now i do speak Japanese. I would like to have signs in Japanese at the bank, on the road way, option 3 for the power company, why don't we have Korean options too? Or French, or German? Because these people normally LEARN English - or at least enough to get by.
doko ga nihongo no shusha desu ka.
where are my japanese options? | | Reply To this Message

Guess who started it? Illegal migrants.... didn't put out their camp fire. But, their camp site was found, and this is where it started from.

In our state they got a sign every 50 feet telling you to buckle up but nobody puts up a sign saying it's against the law to hire illegal immigrants even though it is. Didn't know that.
They must have needed a big fire for their big bong, and a distraction from the boarder to help more illegals hide from the kitchen light. lol j/k

I thought they had a big sign at 50 feet intervals on the boarder fence that said
"Illegals, Welcome to america! Your journey must have been hard. You may now protest being illegal and try to conform our laws to your wishes. You may also work illegally, take our jobs, run our businesses under, degrade our property values, increase our already high crime rate, lower work wages through your cheap labor, and force the majority to learn mexican language as there is no reason for YOU to learn English. God bless you."
Least that's what people seem to want to see. Specially those that protested for immigrant reform.
When they did that one day boycott where they didn't buy anything to show us how much america needed illegals the only businesses it affected was mexican. all other businesses did the same amount they always did. didn't have any other affect.

| Posted by: lacheezer | | It is clear that most of you have a limited conception of history, a lack of understanding as to how economic changes are related to immigrant labor, and most of you make ridiculous inferences based on pseudo-factual infomation.
(1). If we trace the lineage of everyone in this forum, some one in your family was an immigrant. The only true Americans are American Indians (look at any history book to verify this claim). So that person that speaks Japanese should be reurned to their true country of origin.
(2). If we trace the migratory patterns of anyone in this forum, someone crossed some border illegally. The fact of the matter is that most immigration laws were lax in the early 1920s and 1940s as opposed to today, making it easier to cross the border and remain in the U.S.
(3). Many of you make ludicrous claims about immigrants. How does being immigrant or illegal lead to fire starting? What about all the fires that legals have caused in the U.S. In the 1800s, White natives inadvertedly started the Chicago fire (burning the entire city). Did being a native White start the fire? Again, silly assumptions.
(4). There is no evidence that immigrants cause more crime than natives of any sort. Look at the ecological studies back to Shaw and Mckay (1942) Social Disorganization Theory.
(5). Simple theory of capitalism indicates that for all of you to get inexpensive services or products, the labor cost associated must be low. The truth of the matter is that for you to pay a low price at a restaurant, obtain a descent price on clothing, or obtain any other service, the price is contingent on how much it costs to produce such product or service. If you all want to pay a great deal, then get rid of immigrants. They are doing us all a favor. These are simple economics.
(6). Most people in Europe speak four to five languages. Why should Americans be the only ignorant ones to only speak English?
(7). Protests take time to see their effect. Ghandi did not change British oppression in one day. The economic, social, and political effect of that one day of protest and the marches will not be seen for many months to come. | | Reply To this Message

I do not know if it was illegals that started the fire, but the joke was funny as hell. besides here you are again saying immigrants - we said illegals NOT immigrants in general read more carefully.

Don't need too - its too old to account for what i'm speaking of for the year 2000.
Also, proven where i live, illegals and wanna-be-gang bangers are, fact - little over 60% cause of crime in my city. Do i think that's all that cause crime, of course not.

this is true but only to a small %.

I speak 4 and i'm an american. What i speak is not your concern. how many do you speak?
Half of what was said in this thread went over your head my friend. No one here is AGAINST immigration which it appears you think we are. Not sure why, because everyone has pretty much stated there is not an issue there of - its the fact that they want to do it illegally. Like i said.
i want to live in japan for a while. can i just go there and get a job without a visa? without any id? if i did it illegally they would put me in jail.
in mexico, illegally sometimes means you get shot.

| Posted by: Kerry02 | | I live in Phoenix, Arizona. The Hispanic population here is about 50% - so many of those not legals. So many not speaking or understanding English. So many clogging the emergency rooms in every hospital with children with ear infections, sore throats, colds. All difficult things, but if they had insurance they could have seen the doctor in his office. So many have no insurance that when we took my dying husband to the ER for emergency treatment, we were left to sit for hours before he was taken care of. Please don't make us out to be racist when all we really want is for people who come from Mexico to live here to have the means to support themselves so that my tax money doesn't have to do it. We want them to speak the language that is normally spoken here - English. We want them to obey our laws and pay the same taxes we pay. And we don't want them on Welfare while we have to pay our own way. We want them to be employable. If I were to move to some other country, I'm sure that would be expected of me. | | Reply To this Message

Yes but if they come here legitimately, work, pay taxes, and support themselves without your tax money, they won't be forced to work for cut rate wages. They will expect, demand, and receive the same wages as American citizens. In fact, the Senate guest worker plan requires by law that guest workers are paid the U.S. Federal Prevailing Wage, an entitlement that U.S. citizens do not even receive unless they happen to be working on a federal project.
Furthermore, the guest workers will be entitled to the benefits of affirmative action as minorities. So, overall, the cost of hiring Mexican guest workers will be higher than hiring U.S. citizens.
The guest workers are surging into the U.S. now just to get wages that are lower than what U.S. citizens will work for. Just think how much faster they will arrive with the promise of wages that are higher than what U.S. citizens get. The only problem is, who is going to hire the overpriced crowds from Mexico?

This is why all illegals need to be shipped home via ups. Our tax money pays for their home stay, so why sould they become legal? They make more money being illegal then legal because they do not have to pay taxes, get free medical care through my taxes, their children get free education through my taxes, welfare through my taxes, etc. Legals are fine, but illegals should have no right to complain, or even protest. Protesting is a right to american citizens. if your illegal then you are not a citizen so that right does not exist.
My taxes need to support something more worth while then illegal aliens. No offense, but its the truth.
Over 5 years 6million + people have been caught trying to cross the boarder from mexico. Just think of how many made it through. This year alone, back in june, the count was above 600,000 sent back. This doesn't include those that made it.
We need to move the great wall of china to the mexican boarder.
If the population keeps growing at the rate it is, plus all the illegals(up to something like 16-19 million illegals ready to be boxed and shipped back), our countries resources will run out within 2-3 generations. (human ecology, 2005). That is, if the invasion isn't stopped soon, and we get a flood of 6-7 million more illegals in the next 5 years.
Think of how much tax payers money would be saved if they just littered the boarder with motion guns, lazers, and mines? j/k j/k

The overpricing scenario that I have described is for the so-called guest workers of the Senate bill. They would be entirely legal. So the plan is to offer the impoverished Mexicans a legal way to earn wages higher than U.S. citizens can get.
Right now, businesses hire illegals because they work for less. Why would they hire them if the government prices them higher than U.S. citizens? This is a major flaw in the Senate plan.
They will probably end up giving a government subsidy of our tax money to businesses so they can afford to hire the overpriced guest workers. That would be a typical government solution to a problem that they have created.

It would also be expected of you. Also, you would be required to speak the language. To work in Japan you must have a vocab of over 1000 words and speak well. Same goes for other countries. Like Germany, France etc.
If i went to france, they would expect me to speak french.
On that note:
Why do Germans know english german and french? Well, you can drive a few hours from Germany and enter France - a non-german speaking country. I drive a few hours and reach half way through my state. They still speak english. i can drive for 20 hours to reach the east coast - still speak english. this is one reason Americans do not always learn another language - because there isn't a reason if your not going to use it.
in the U.K. you drive a few hours to a differnt language speaking country.

Not sure if you knew this or not -
We are required to take a language to grad from high school, also, to get a 4 year degree you are required to have a language other then english - required.
Problem- we don't use what ever language it is that we take because there are few areas in America to use it, less its spanish.
use it, or lose it.
my biology degree requires 2 years of one language in high school or x-amount of credits in college to earn the degree.
I've taken Japanese for a year and a half and i'm pretty good with it - well enough to stay in japan if i wanted to.

A typical reply from a typical person who does not understand the size of america. Most of our neighbors are, well, ourselves that we do business with. YOU have a reason to learn different languages - you drive for a while and reach another country - it isn't like that here. We do not have to learn other languages to do business across the boarder of where we live.
If i lived in a country like yours, i would want to learn different languages and it would also be more easy to learn them. I would have people to speak with in a different language.
If i cross the north, south, east, or west boarders -
All english speaking places.
you can take france and put it in the land mass 17.9 times and almost fill up americas boarders.
Like i said before - you live in france, you are boardered with a different language speaking country to the norht south east and west - all within a few hours drive away . ****, it takes 5 hours just to cross my state and we are small compared to some of the others out there.
my sister lives over one day away and they still speak english there. My sister lives 26 hours away if i drive 80 mph and that still isn't the boarder of the east cost.
- you live in oklahoma and the cross the boarder into the Country of Arkansas, which is also a state, and you speak english. But its like going from oklahoma to china, because the people act, think, and respond differently then in the country of oklahoma.
America is like 50 countries that turned into states to create one big ENGLISH speaking country.
This is an argument no one in the little countries that boarder little countries that all speak different languages will ever comprehend.
Between america and canada - we make up all of north america - Canada speaks french, but they all speak English. I know a bunch of canadians that do not know anything but english.
The only reason to learn another language is if you plan on using it - most of america doesn't use another language -
i took french for three years and i only remember two lines.
why
because i didn't use it, had no plans to use it, and i learned it over 10 years ago - and i knew no one that spoke french. it wasn't until nearly 8 years after learning french that i finally met someone from france that spoke french.
I do not want to learn spanish, and i shouldn't have to learn spanish unless i plan on going to mexico or spain and i plan on entering neither.
some other countries speak spanish as well, and i have no plans to enter them.
plus, what good would it do me? If i learn it now, don't use it for 8 years, it would be a waste of money and a waste of my education to learn something if i don't use it.
commonsense.
Again, if i go to france, i'm expected to communicate in french, german, chinese, or whatever country i do to.
if a mexican comes to america,
why the hell should i learn spanish to accommodate them?
they should already know english.
French would not accommodate me, they didn't accommodate a friend of mine who was sent over there instead of the french speaker that his work place hired. most of the people refused to speak english.
Do you See my point, learn the language if your going to use it, and ONLY if your going to use it - or you lose it and the time you spent learning it was a waste.
Or do you think that i should run out and spend a couple thousand dollars to learn German, russian, or French although i'll never use it?
U.S.A 3.7 million square miles
France: 220,000 square miles WOW huge. would take France and scotland to fil in texas.
Scotland 30, 420 square miles -
i drove through 6 states on a one month vacation and put 100,000 + miles on my car, including driving around each one
and people of the world ask the stupid question - why does the u.s.a. use so much gas?
duh, dumb ass
because we are huge and everyone wants a car. And people in other countries cannot fathom how big we are.
I'd prefer not to drive but i have no choice.
plus, there's so much to see and everything is so far apart.
Again because we are HUGE compared to these countries that belittle us because of gas use.
i could have driven around scotland 3 times during that one vacation.
germany 137,804 square miles
now for my state
Oklahoma, in central U.s.a.
68,656 square miles of land, 7.5 million acres of forest;
holy smokes - its double scotland! Put you in here not once but twice - damn you tiny.
that's just 1/50 states and it isn't even close to the largest state.
New Mexico
121,355.53 sq miles
New York
54,556.00 sq miles
Oregon
95,996.79 sq miles
Texas
261,797.12 sq miles
Alaska
571,951.26 sq miles
just to name a few.
Now, you tell me what language i'm going to need if i move to new york, alaska, oregon, texas>? Or do business with said places?
If i planned on visiting France, then yes i would learn to communicate, same with any other country that doesn't speak enlish as a primary language -
as of right now, only place i want to visit that does not speak english as prime language is japan.
What's this, i'll have japanese degree next year? wow, see i plan on using that. I do not plan on using spanish. And i'll repeat, i'm not learning it because someone wants to move here and talk to me in THEIR home language in MY country.
If my major was internation business - then i would have to learn not one but 3 languages. But that's not my major, so why waste my time, brain, and money learning something i will not use?
You explain why i should learn somthing to forget it by not using it>? this is why americans do not learn other languages - because most would lose it from not using it.
I have a friend who was very good with spanish... she can't speak it anymore because she stopped using it.
I know a japanese that only recalls the basics because he stopped using it little over 10 years ago when he came to the U.S. at the age of 14. He spoke nothing but japanese for 14 years and in a matter of 10 years, he lost the ability because he never used it. Wasn't anyone to speak with in japanese.

And then they ask the Asinine question "why not" and think they are better because they know 3 or 4.
Well, it is so simple that even a zygote can figure it out.
90% of Americans have no reason to use or learn multiple languages because no one is here to converse with in that language.
Its something that the world is ignorant to. | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: Lawless | | Last two posts, Dreamz... well put. We aren't crossing over into other countries, at all. We're going into other States, within America, which are english speaking. If I was going to visit another country, I will try to know a few simple sayings. If I'm going to try to MOVE there, I want to KNOW that language, so that I can communicate with all of the people.

I think that everyone who thinks that we should all learn 10 languages should come to america and see for themselves that they have NO one to talk to in a language other then English 99% of the time.
I have NEVER in almost 27 years met anyone from Germany that spoke german. hmm, i should run out and learn german so i can communicate and talk to myself in german.
in 27 years i have met one person who speaks Russian. other then a teacher.
In 27 years i have met one person that spoke any language other then English from Africa.
In 27 years i have never met anyone that spoke Italian.
Now, i better go learn italian, or i might get lost when i visit Kansas. yeah, right. I know the proper language to get through Kansas.
In 27 years i have met one family that spoke korean and chinese.
of course these people are in America, but they speak English and do not even try to speak in their home language because within these 3.7 million miles of boarder - its English.
I bet i've met people who spoke these languages, but there was no reason for them to even tell me BECAUSE - they expected english.
illegal mexican of course expects spanish only. Doesn't matter what country they are in.
This post excludes teachers of other languages, of course i've met some of them but that's their job. i'm speaking of in general around the nation. and i've been in about 20 or more states.

| Posted by: Lawless | | My neighbor is from Germany... and he only speaks german if someone else does. Otherwise, he speaks very good english, with a heavy accent.
I've lived all over the US, and spanish is the only language that I've run across where the people have refused to learn to speak english. | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: lodgebo | | All I was saying is that in Europe we learn these languages because we have to as we might need them for travelling and for business. Yet for some reason I ended up with a damn geography lesson on things I already knew.
Also I thin Scotland is slightly biugger than the 420 miles you claim. When you consider that it is 320 from Edinburgh to Aberdeen 420 seems to be a bit short when you consider the size of the highlands and Islands, the borders to the Lowlands ( no Midlands in Scotland).
Also I can travel 190 miles in Scotlanbd and end up speaking a diffrent language.
Hey I can give geography lessons to. | | Reply To this Message

i was just making trying to make a point about why americans do not need to learn 10 languages to travel the country.
Scotland 30,420 sq miles came from a scottish/uk website.
Scotland has an area of 30,420 square miles or 78,789 square kilometres and a population of 5.1 million. The average population density is 0.65 persons per hectare which compares to 3.6 persons per hectare for England.
Scotland — Population: 5,062,011 (2001) -
http://www.rosebankhouse.co.uk/index.htm
i compared the information with other websites as well so, if its incorect on how many miles - please correct it.
Oklahoma — Population: 3,450,654
shouldn't even be that much - this state sucks. in two years i'm moving out of it

| Posted by: lodgebo | | Hey I stayed a weekend in that same guest house a couple of years back with my wife. Weird eh.
Actually you are right I misreead the size you quoted I was sort of listening to something on the TV while reading what you posted. Mind you technically Scotland is part of the UK and the UK owns the channel islands and the Falkland islands and Gibralter so maybe I was right on a tecnicality . In all seriousness it must 30,000+ because islands laike Iona and the like are not to big. | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: Nymphadora | | I believe that everyone is entitled to certain rights. Human rights. No one should be treated like less of a person because they are from a different country. Also not all illegal immigrants are Mexican.
That being said now I’ll tell you what else I believe. If you are here illegally, you are NOT entitled to the same rights as a US citizen. You are not a citizen therefore you have no rights. Like others have said I don't blame anyone for wanting to "better themselves." The people I have a problem with are the ones that are just here to exploit the system. They come over for a few months, work, send the money back to Mexico, go back to Mexico to live for a while and then do it again. They want an entire nation to change its culture to accommodate them. What about my rights? I don't think I should have to tip toe around because I might offend someone or their culture. When a person comes to live in a country, they are supposed to assimilate, naturalize. I'm not saying to completely forget the culture they come from, but don't make me change mine. The great thing about America is we are a mixture of all different races religions and cultures. We all come from several different BACKGROUNDS. But we have all sort of mixed together to from our own sort of culture. Why should an entire nation change to satisfy one single minority (I use that term loosely since soon that wont be a true statement) group? If they are truly coming here for a better life why try to make this a New Mexico, if its so bad why bring it with you we don’t want it.
As for this being a nation of immigrates, yes that is true. But do we not learn anything from history. What we should let what happened to the Native Americans happen again to us? I don’t think so. That’s the whole point of studying history, so you don’t make the same mistakes. We now have laws that are supposed to govern the way we live that weren’t in place then obviously. Live by the law of the land right. And there are immigration laws in place. Just because some of them may be flawed doesn’t mean it’s a free for all. You still have to abide by them. We no longer live in world of divide and conqure.
And with all that being said I'll get to my main point
As big as America is, where's everyone going to live?
You can’t fit 10 pounds of crap in a 5-pound bag. | | Reply To this Message

This subject has become a big concern for me recently. I can truly see both sides and the faults in the arguments that are made. Most people are to stubborn to actually LISTEN to someone that has a valid point. The just constantly throw around labels based on nothing and if your not affiliated with their "party" nothing you say is right or matters. I can't stand it. Everyone is just going around in circles and nothing is getting done about the problem. And it just burns me up that people coming here from another country or are already here illegally are entitled to more rights and benefits than I as a citizen have.
I just have so much to say about this topic and my mind works faster than my fingers.

Oddly enough, in the case of illegal immigration, both political parties are in agreement. However, their view is in conflict with most of the American people who want immigration controlled with strict border enforcement.
The Democrat and Republican parties both want amnesty for illegals already here and a guset worker program that will make it easy for more to come. They want cheap immigrant labor for the interests of the ag business and other labor intensive jobs. They also want to win the immigrant votes in elections.
In the broadest philosophical sense, the proponents of easy immigration want to eliminate the Mexcan border as an impediment to movement. And they also want to do likewise with all the borders between all countries from Mexico to Argentina. The objective is that everybody would be free to work anywhere they want to. And you can guess where they want to work.

| Posted by: Nymphadora | | There should be stricter border control, not just for immigration, but in the interest of national security.
The guest worker program is a joke. I think in order to qualify for it you should have to do so in your native country.
It seems to me thats it's more of an agenda for one party more than the other when it comes to amnesty and election votes.
Did you know ILLEGAL immigrants can vote in local elections. And there is nothing in the Constitution that says they cant vote for the president, something has got to change. | | Reply To this Message

For cheap labor, it's a Republican agenda. For adding votes, it tends to be a Democrat agenda because the downtrodden are a natural constituency of the Democrats just like the rich are a natural constituency of the Republicans.
New immigrants are likely to be at the lowest rung of the economic ladder, so they will be inclined to vote for Democrats. However, they won't stay at the bottom of the ladder, so the Republicans also have their eye on winning the votes of immigrants.

Yes, Yes. I know this for a fact. "It's too hard" they constantly whine. Well, yes, this statement is true; English is a very hard language for a foreigner to learn, but that is no excuse.
