Tonight were down to five contestants. The competition gets harder, as the contestants have to work to really deliver their songs. Who should be the one, after the show, to leave, tomorrow night?

Here's the list of the songs that they are supposedly going to perform.
Remember, one song is from the current billboard chart, and the other is a song from the year they were born.

Paris - "Kiss" by Prince and "SOS" by Rihanna.

Chris - "I Want You to Want Me" by Cheap Trick and "Right Here" by Staind.

Taylor - "Who Says You Can't Go Home" by Bon Jovi and "New York State of Mind" by Billy Joel OR "Play That Funky Music" by Parliment.

Elliott - "Save the Last Dance for Me" by Michael Buble and "On Broadway" by George Benson.

Katharine - "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree" by KT Turnstall and "Against All Odds" by Phil Collins.

It seems that my namesake, Elliott Yamin has the most well known and melodic songs. I think that should give Elliott the edge as far as judging goes. Voting on the other hand seems to be a combination of voters trying to save a popular Idol who may have "had a bad day" and other voters who vote for anyone that Simon didn't like, (of the voters whose favorite is already gone.) and of course individual surviving Idol fan bases.

As you can see, I don't really believe that Idol's voting system works. I think it should be 1 phone 1 vote. (or perhaps even 5 votes per phone to get the whole family involved but by allowing hundreds or even thousands of votes to come from 1 phone is only giving the power to those fans who are so maniacal about Idol that they give up their idle time to vote for 2 hours straight.

I think it would be merely luck to predict the winner at this point
Certainly Katherine, Elliott and Chris (in no particular order) would be the favorites to be the final 3 (sorry Taylor fans)

Hold on...Wait a second....How old is Elliott anyway. Are not both his songs from the fifties???

Elliott's choice of the song, "Save The Last Dance For Me" is on the billboards, right now, by Michael Buble. It might have been a song, originally from the 50's... I don't know... but, it's a current chart topper.

then I am still confused....which song is from the year he was born? I think we all have a lot more to worry about than this though, like will paula be sober tomorrow?

Reply To this Message

Posted by: Benyamin

I just figured it out... "Save the last dance for me" was originally by the drifters but Buble's version (same song but song today)
is a current chart topper. George Benson sang the Platters hit "on Broadway" in 1978 (the year Elliott was born)

So both songs are much older but because newer singers sang them later, he gets to sing them.

Umm...I dont even know what to think of this one. Im gonna have to hear it from her first. I like this song...but only from Prince. I dont know if Ill like someone else even attempting it.

What a wierd choice.

I am sickened by the thought of this song being done. First off, I'm NOT a Prince fan. Secondly, this particular song... well, I just don't know how I will feel about someone else performing it, like you said.

Okay, I have to close the thread, until later, since someone has decided for Paris to get the boot, and she's not even performed!!! Please wait until the show has been on. Sheesh!!!

I just received this e mail from Sherry:

"The List"

The following Song Spoiler list is being announced on radio stations, including DC, Portland and NYC. Ryan Seacrest has also announced the song choices on his radio program. So, peeps, I'm thinking this ain't a goof. Here they are (first song is birth year, second song is Top 10 Billboard):

Paris Bennett -- "Kiss" by Prince (Tom Jones in 1988) and "Be Without You" by Mary J. Blige.

Katharine McPhee -- "Against All Odds" by Phil Collins and "Black Horse and Cherry Tree" by KT Tunstall

Taylor Hicks -- "Play that Funky Music" by Wild Cherry and "Something" by the Beatles (George Harrison wrote this one)

Elliot Yamin -- "On Broadway" by George Benson and "Home" by Micheal Buble

Chris Daughtry -- "Renegade" by Styx and "I Dare You" by Shinedown"

"Be Without You" by Mary J Blige was one of the songs that I was sooooo hoping to hear. So, if Paris is going to really sing it, then I'm stoked. Singing "Kiss" by Prince... well, I don't like Prince, and I'm not sure that this is a good choice for her.

Also, I think that "Against All Odds" by Phil Collins, is a great choice for Katharine. I love this song, and I think that she will do a good job. I don't know the other song... at least, just the title I don't think that I do.

I'm not too sure how I feel about Taylor singing, "Play That Funky Music" but, he could totally surprise me... and I'm hoping that he does. The Beatles selection! Well... I'm not a fan of the Beatles, at all... so, who know how I will feel about that one.

Elliott is so going to be a great one tonight with both of these picks. I am anxiously awaiting to hear him tonight.

And I'm SOOOOOOOOOO glad that Chris isn't doing the Cheap Trick song. I like that song... but, I don't think that it would have been a good performance song for him. Now, Styx on the other hand... great band, and great song. And I love Shinedown. So, Chris has me smiling at these song choices.

Yeppers... I love Styx, esp "Come Sail Away" One of my ex boyfriends used to sing that song to me, and he sounded JUST LIKE the singer. It still makes me melt, to this day. Now, they have a lot of other songs that I love... but, that one takes the cake.

Elliot - I missed the first song.

Paris - Didnt like it.

Chris was awesome!

Katharine....the Phil Collins song...no..not great at all.

Taylor - Play That Funky Music - Hmmm...he was actually pretty good with that song. (Edit: Simon didnt like it, Randy thought he was in a bar and had a couple drinks, paula liked it)...I didnt think it was bad...it was actually fun. Didnt show off his voice...but I kind of liked it. (Maybe I just like the song? Dont know...but I thought it was good)

Chris was awesome, eh? Like that's a surprise, right.

Paris didn't sound good singing Prince? I'm not surprised.... then again, I didn't think that I would end up liking it. Maybe the second half will be better, with the Mary J Blige song.

Reply To this Message

Posted by: mystic

Paris was better on the second song, but she still screamed alot on the song.

Elliot was good I thought, but same stuff.

Chris...I liked the second song..not as good as the first.

Katharine...second song...was good, but damn she sang it on her knees the whole time...I was like "get up!"

DAMN! Taylor shredded my Beatles song! GAG! I dont care what the judges say...I HATED it!! Dont sing Paul if you cant compare!

Simon just asked how he managed to get a Beatles song into the songs of today....

How did he do that? Was that fair????????? Or am I missing something? So he got it off a billboard chart from songs that were reissued? Still, it wasnt a song of today.

I dont like the fact that he scammed it..and I didnt like it anyhow.

Is it on the current billboard charts? If it was, then that's how. Otherwise, I would be completely clueless.

Im trying to find it..but my mom called and said she heard it was on the charts of reissued songs...

Does that then apply? I woudnt think so...at least not in my book. Hell the Beatles have been dismantled for years. Even if it were onthe charts of reissued songs as the top, it still doesnt apply as one of the top song popular today.

Trying to find it..but so is everyone else I think. Billboard is moving slow. It must be jammed packed with people looking....especially after the Simon comment.

Looked it up on a couple different places on Billboard...this was the end result comment:

"Your search returned 0 results.

If it's on the Billboard charts, currently, or last week, then yes, it's approved to sing. I agree though, that it should be a 'current' song. But, to each their own. They were told that it had to be on that list.

Maybe someone else can find it...but Ive come up with nothing.

it must be listed under recurrent songs on the list...but does it technically count? Depends on what one considers "songs of today" I guess.

Okay, I just went to the AI board. The front page on idolonfox states this:

Tonight, the remaining contestants will sing 2 songs – one from the year of their birth and one from this week’s Billboard’s Top 10 charts.

Now, I am sure that it's the top 10 from any of the categories. So, we just have to find which one has that Beatles song in it.

Apparently the song was GEORGE HARRISON's who USED to be a Beatle but was no longer. The Beatles music may be under lock and key but an individual artists music wouldn't have to meet the same standards if they so wish.

This song was number six this week.

George Harrison wrote the song when he was with the Beatles for the Beatles...but it is definitely a Beatles song.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"Something" is a single (music)|single released by The Beatles in 1969. "Something" was the first song written by George Harrison to appear on the A-side of a Beatles single, sharing top billing on the double A-side single with "Come Together" in the United Kingdom. In the United States, "Something" alone was featured on the A-side, while "Come Together" was relegated to the B-side. It was the first Beatles single to contain tracks already available on a long playing (LP) album, with both "Something" and "Come Together" having appeared on Abbey Road. "Something" was the only Harrison composition to top the American charts while he was a Beatle.

It was a song that the Beatles did... but, it's HIS song. His songs are free to be released, and can easily be approved. It's Lennon, and McCartney, that aren't free for release.

Oh wow... they just finished up with Elliott's first performance, and went to commercial. It was a Ford commercial, about being BOLD. Did anyone catch the music playing? It was Kelly Clarkson!

On what chart was this on? I mean number 6 for recurrent hits? I cant see how it could be number six on the most recent list...so what list did it come off of? Just curious, because I couldnt find it...then again, Im not educated in looking for Billboard music lists. I either like it or I dont...I dont usually care where it is on the charts.

Well...you wrote this

"Apparently the song was GEORGE HARRISON's who USED to be a Beatle but was no longer"

So you can see why I would be confused. It seemed as if you stated that it was his after he was a Beatle hence the "USED to be a Beatle but was no longer."

Sorry, wasn't trying to be confusing. Even though he was a Beatle when he wrote it, it's still his song, hun. I just pulled that comment off from the AI board. But, they are saying that they could get clearance for a George Harrison song.

As far as it being a current Billboard topper... all I know is that it was number 6 on the weeks current chart, in one of the catagories. Don't know which though.

Pulled it off the AI board huh? Hmmm...dont listen to those clowns over there. Obviously that person had no idea what they were talking about.

You got my curiousity going on the AI boad...went over there. They said it was #6 on the album chart. So, went onto Billboard...and still, cant find it.

But, oh well...doesnt matter. I know a Beatles Box CD was released at the end of April, so maybe they got onto the charts with that...but nonetheless, IMO, he fudged it up a little bit...I think he realized that he pushed it, and I think they did as well.

Anyhow...Im done harping on that one. It sucked no matter how it was sliced...IMO of course.

Anyhow...I did notice Kelly Clarkson singing for that commercial. My husband mentioned it as well.

So basically, Paris stunk. All she does is yell into the mic. She's eerily old for her age. She needs to go. KISS by Prince? come on.

Chris - great as usual.

Katherine - her first song stunk, but KT Tunstall's song sounded good. I love her, I'm going to see her next Thursday in concert! What was with her being on the floor? that was bizarro.

Elliott- I love Michael Buble and he sang that sang pretty well too. He doesn't have much stage presence though.

Taylor - I loved the first performance, he was having a blast. But he did sound a lot better the second time.

Paris - bu bye.

You know what? I read it a while after I wrote that...I thought that perhaps you did vote for her in the poll.

Do I even need to ask who voted for Chris??

Other than that...I have no idea why someone would actually think he was worse than everyone else. he was really good last night!

I somewhat agree with that in a way. My biggest beef with Katharine is that she sings too much to the camera and not to the crowd. She picks sad songs, yet smiles at the camera during the whole performance. IMO, a song like that wont work if you have a smile on your face the whole time.

As for her voice...she has more than an okay voice...she pretty damn good, vocally speaking, as far as Im concerned.

I'm with you there, mystic. She smiles, when she should have a somber face. People can't FEEL the music when she sings those songs. When you look at singers, and bands, who are extremely popular, they don't sing a sad song, in any capacity, and have a smile on their face. Their expressions match the words.

BUT, in her defense, she's probably excited about being on AI, and a bit nervous, at the same time.

I agree with that to a point...but on the other side, she has been singing in public for sometime, and with her mother teaching her, you would have thought her mother would have told her not to do that.

She needs to learn to sing to the crowd, not the camera, even though we are the camera (so to speak)...but I much more appreciate a singer more focused on the song than playing it up to the camera. The more she looks at the camera, the more irritated I get. But I love the voice....

Agreed on that point. She never seems to really look around, and engage her audience. I think that it might be different, at some point (at least one can hope). Then again, who knows WHAT those dumb ass producers are telling them. Maybe she's told to look into the camera, or something. It wouldn't surprise me at all.
