What do you propose for an Immigration Policy? |
| Posted by: Edward Teach | | I think there are as many ideas as there are people in the United States.
Our forefathers came to this country mostly as illegal aliens. Some took an oath to become citizens, some came through Ellis Island. Bottom line is most Americans came from immigrants who were at one time illegal.
That being said many believe that we are being invaded by Hispanics crossing our Southern boarder. In one month more than 40,000 illegal aliens crossed the border.
What should we as a country do???? | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: HECK! | | How high does it have to be though? 50 feet? Barbed wire at the top? Alligator pit? How far does it stretch? Most importantly, how much cash is it going to cost me and how much will I save compared to how much I am alread losing to the problem already.

Mexico SHOULD share in the cost of any wall being built but, that is unlikely as they would rather have a open border with only the cash coming back.

| Posted by: USA1 | | 1.) Stop hiring illegals and make the employers pay dearly.
2.) All illegals need to be identified and either made legal or allow them a work visa, If they don't they like either they WILL get deported.
3.) Allow them to register for a temporary work visas (for work)
4.) They must speak English to work here.
5.) No amnesty.
6.) Protect the border with what ever will work. Fence, wall or other but, the hole in the dam has to get plugged. | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: lodgebo | | The thing with this wall idea is that it will not work. People will still get in somehow. Look at the Berlin wall Well constructed, barbed and razor wired patrolled by men with guns and fast, angry, hungry dogs, yet people still got through. The wall in Israel has certainly lessened attacks but again people still get through. So what makes you believe the US will do any better?
There is something that a lot of people have not addressed yet and that is the heinous crime of people smuggling. We have seen it in the UK and other countries as soon as you close the borders these organised criminal gangs start to get people in. How do you get round that one? | | Reply To this Message

When you look at the border, it is so porous that you CAN drive a truck across it. They will need to stop up the entry point inspections too. It's just too easy right now.
The thing about punishing the employers would stop a lot. If they can't find work, many just won't come.

Just getting it down to a "few" million would be a big improvement.

Why would they want to pay for it? Beside the fact it's a corrupt government, the more people that come over here, the less peopel they have to worry about. They would sooner build a tunnel than a wall.

Easier said than done. The border -- it's kinda big.

Yes the border is big, but the real problem is that you have most of both Republicans and Democrats favoring the influx, plus you have the Mexican government actively promoting it.

I'd need to see documentation that shows the majority of Americans are descended from illegal aliens before I'd accept that as being said.
America has the most liberal immigration policy in the world. There are more LEGAL immigrants allowed into the USA each year than the rest of the nations combined. Any suggestion that our concern about illegal immigrants displays a lack of compassion is ignorance of the facts and of our history.
The current administrations steadfast refusal to confront the problem has allowed it to get completely out of hand. It's gotten to the point where vigilante groups are being formed to protect our borders. Bloodshed is inevitable. It's our country but we're going top have to fight to keep it.

| Posted by: Phalaris | | As a resident of Phoenix, which has a very high population of illegals, my take on the situation is that it's unfortunate that Mexico must be such a lousy place to live, but it's not our responsibility to take in everyone who doesn't want to live there. What other country lets tens of thousands of people flood in and expect the infrastructure to take care of them and cater to them?
I respect the fact that many illegal workers are doing jobs that are otherwise difficult to fill. However, the negative impact on the community is a problem.
I would not be opposed to a sensible work-visa system, since I don't have an issue with people who want to work hard and better their situation. However, I don't agree with having vast numbers of people running around driving uninsured vehicles and expecting housing, food, medical care and schooling not just for free, but all in Spanish so no one has to bother to learn English.
Liberal apologists, who apparently feel that the United States is responsible for the world's ills, or at least is the sole party that needs to bear the brunt to correct them, try to either deny or downplay these things, or suggest that there's nothing amiss with legal taxpayers paying for illegal beneficiaries. I don't agree. Sorry, I live here. I know what it's like to not be able to apply for a quarter of the jobs in a given column of the paper because I'm not bilingual; I've known people who suffered undue hardship because they were unlucky enough to be in an accident caused by an illegal driving an uninsured car; here in AZ, we taxpayers are apparently about to have to actually pay because someone doesn't think our Spanish-speaking instruction in public schools is sufficient. That would be like producing paperwork or documentation for everyones ancestors. Many people left their country with very little money and hopes of a better life.
For me I believe it's an invasion. A silent peaceful invasion. And for the most part we are welcoming them in. That being said, for the most part I don't mind those coming in legally. However why should we allow some to cut the line of those who jump through the hoops to come here legally? Don't get me wrong, I like Hispanics, my wife was raised in Spanish speaking countries, I like the Hispanic culture and best of all the food. I've been to Mexico.
My Solution (well maybe)
First we have to determine who are here legally and who are not. This would take a lot of cooperation from a lot of agencies, DMV, IRS, Immigration, police etc.
1. We all know that anyone born in the US are citizens therefore the parents get first crack at becoming legal.
2. Anyone here illegally gets a chance to become legal. They must prove that they have a job, have no police record. State when they got here, how long they intend to stay and apply for the proper temporary work visa. They also need to get a (new program) Tax ID and pay taxes. They are not eligible for unemployment or workers comp. But their employer must provide health insurance and pay a minimum wage. Once no longer employed they must leave.
3. If they intend to make the US a permanent home they must register with immigration, obtain a Social Security card and pay taxes, then they can apply for permanent residence status and must become a citizen within a specified time.
4. Criminal amnesty is not an option if they committed a crime they are deported. (except the crime of illegal entry)
5. Employers must attempt to offer their jobs to US citizens and prove that they have made every attempt to hire a citizen for that job at a fair wage. They must advertise for that job no less than two weeks and show that those who applied were not qualified and why. And any complaints that are found to be true after an investigation that they discriminated against a US citizen will be dealt a substantial fine and the pulling of the right to hire migrant workers. Again they must provide a minimum wage, health, workers comp. and follow all the employment laws. They should also have to pay a special tax to be able to employee migrant workers.
6. Immigration stations, like Ellis Island, all along the borders. A staging point where the immigrant needs to be documented. Obtain a green card. Show that they have a place to go/live/work or sponsor. Obtain a temporary work visa.
That's just a start

How many illegals can you hire for the price of one US Citizen? Problem is who is going to take that job at minimum wage.
How can we boost the Mexican economy? One way is to move manufacturing plants to Mexico but the problem is that those plants then figure out that they don't have to pay a living wage so they don't. | | Reply To this Message
