As we all know, the US backed Iraq in their conflict with Iran. I won't even get into the Contra scandal right now.

Iraq had ties with the USSR, but they came to the US and were welcomed with arms open. Their had been no diplomatic relations since the 1967 war with Israel. They were formally restored in 1984 after the US knew, and a UN team confirmed, that Iraq was using chemical weapons against the Iranian troops. Remember that picture of Rummy and Saddam?

In 1982, the US State Department removed Iraq from its list of “state sponsors of terrorism”, and fought off efforts by the US Congress to put it back on the list in 1985. The US blocked condemnation of Iraq’s chemical attacks in the UN Security Council. The US was the sole country to vote against a 1986 Security Council statement condemning Iraq’s use of mustard gas against Iranian troops.

Interesting, indeed.

So, my right winge counterparts, is it more Ostrich syndrome or can we actually get a viable response?

A grand point indeed. One of the many aspects of historical amnesia that sweeps your nation Im afraid. If its not projected day and night on one of your "news" channels its not worthy of attention it seems.
Oh well theres always US "heros" to focus on...bombs away!

Good luck in getting a plausible response to this thread. You know with the history of goverments including the US, lying to the masses, how can anyone simply accept everything that falls out of the US goverment's mouth, especially when facts totally contradict our assertions?

I mean, we didn't believe anything Saddam said about his WMD program and then again why should we have? We saw certain facts that disputed his position. But yet when we see facts dispute the position of the Bush administration, we totally dismiss it.

Still to this date, the facts proved that Saddam was telling the truth about his WMD and Bush wasn't when he said they were there and he didn't want this war.

I don't know, you do the math.

Our governments have always been playing tricky games in the name of state's reason. Lying to the public is part of this game. I mean - for the common citizen who would see all events in white or black France and Germany were opposed to the intervention in Iraq and non-collaborative on this issue. Reality is most probably that their respective intelligences have never stopped to collaborate with the american services - this leak about the german intelligence is significant.
In this game of lies and deceit there is no winners - or more precisely the only losers are the citizens.
The Bush admin has simply raised the level of the game to an altitude never attained before. I wish people in the US would hit the streets and demand the impeachment of Bush and his cohort of crooks. It is about time.
