| Posted by: Lawless | | Well, we will just have to wait for our east coast viewers to give us a heads up, sis. It will be okay.
Think about me, when you're watching it... if my mom's plane arrives early, I won't get to see the entire show. And, if Chris is the last one, and I miss him, I will be PISSED! I don't want to watch it on the dvr... I want it now! | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: fuscia | | I don't think Chris will get the last spot for a third time. Look for Paris or maybe Elliott to get it. | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: mystic | | I didnt really care too much for anyone tonight. Chris of course rocked it out, but I admit he was off key a few times.
Kelly sucked.
Mandisa sang a gospel song. Why? I dont know. Not really the stage for that type of music. I admit however..she was good as usual, vocally speaking.
Chris..good to me..but off key a few times. Simon however confused me. Last week he gave Chris kudos for not getting away from his style, yet this week he dogged him for not straying away from it. Can one confuse someone anymore than that? Goodness!
Elliot..really good.
Paris..not for me tonight. I agreed with Simon over this one..too mature for her. She may be 16 but TO ME she seems to me more along the age of 12 just because of the way she acts when she isnt singing. I do think her voice is great though.
Bucky...he sucks as well..I dont care what he sings.
Katherine...she was good, but Im tired of her same old sad songs. When is she gonna sing something with more spunk?
Ace...Im kind of waiting till boy band leaves the show. For once I want to hear a different tone to his voice..lower the key for goodness sake or get out!
Taylor...I like the guy...but everytime he sings, I keep thinking he has to go to the bathroom. I always end up peeing after he sings. Its like watching the water run and you realize, you have to go..
Lisa....I thought she was okay...but confused as to why anyone in their right mind would sing a Kelly Clarkson song. You know right off the bat that you are gonna be compared...not a good move on her part..Kelly fans might eat her alive for this mistake. | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: Lawless | | Lisa starts off the night with, "Because of You" by Kelly Clarkson. Now, Kelly is one of my favorite artists, and I have to say that I'm going to be tough on this one. Right out of the gate she sounds okay... but, there is something as she hit the chorus, that sounds off to me. She's singing in the wrong note... and she's just blah to me. THANK YOU, RANDY! It was just an "okay" version of this song. And I think that Simon was right. The song was too "big" for her.
Kellie singing, "Suds In A Bucket", by Sara Evans. I'm glad that she's chosen a country song.. but, ummmmmmm, she just doesn't sound good. I wasn't impressed with her, once again, tonight. It didn't showcase her voice in a strong way. She sings songs, lately, that bring out the quietness in her. When she auditioned, she did a Kelly Clarkson song, and I was really impressed with her. Tonight... not really.
Ace singing, "Drops of Jupiter" by Train. I love this song, and I hope that he can pull it off. Well, I thought that he could have... but, it was sung in a key too high. He was too sharp throughout most of the performance.
Well, so far it's three out of three that I've not thought have done a good job. Bad song selections... and just off key singing. I hope that we can have something better.
Taylor , who looks SOOOOO different. I like it. Jeans, and a leather jacket. It's something new. Now, lets hope that he sings something good, and does a great job of it. Singing, "Trouble"... I don't know this song. While I don't care for this style of music... I have to say that he sounds good. He was himself, and that's one thing that I like about Taylor. (Is it me, or is he looking younger? His face has more of a baby face look to it, or something!)
Mandisa singing, "Wanna Praise You" Oh my... a gospel song. I have a feeling that she's about to bring the house down. (WHO picked out this outfit? It's NOT flattering, at all. Her butt looked beyond huge.. and they should put something on her to make her not look that big.) Once again, she showed off her pipes... but, there is something about the key that she's singing in. It wasn't as appealing to me as her voice usually is.
I don't know about worshipping at the church of Mandisa... but, I'm about to take up a new religion, of one awesome, bald-headed rocker. Chris ... finally, the reason that I look forward to Tuesday nights. Tonight he's singing, "What If" by Creed. Chris' voice is going to ROCK... just like Scott Stapp. I'm already drooling. This guy is the BEST singer this season. I want to listen to him every single day. He owned the stage tonight... and rocked the house. GREAT song selection. Uhhhhhh, he makes me wanna be that microphone, sooooo bad. And what in the hell was Simon smoking? That was NOT a bad choice for Chris. THAT is who he is.
Katharine singing, "The Voice Within" by Christina Agulaira. Ohhhhhhhhhh, BAD choice of song!!! I'm cringing right now... and not happy with those notes that she's hitting. She needed something a bit deeper, in my opinion. Then again, what do I know, right? I must not know too much, since the judges just praised her to death. I don't agree, at all... and I do like Katharine, a lot... just not tonight's performance.
Bucky singing, "Real Good Man" by Tim McGraw. Back to the country... which is a smart choice. Though, I just think that I want him to go home. I don't like his voice... but singing this song wasn't a bad choice for him. (What in the hell was that 'move' he was making, with one foot... scootin' all over?)
Paris singing, "Work It Out" by Beyonce. (Can you say.. "Extensions") I don't like this song, at all... and she's annoying me with this performance. I'm glad that Simon gives a REAL comments. That was NOT the best performance of the night... and I think that Randy, and Paula, need my box of Q-Tips.
Elliott finishes us off tonight with, "I Don't Want To Be" by Gavin McGraw (?). Ohhhhhhh, I like his voice on this song. I could live with out the bopping that he's doing... but, other than that, he sounds GREAT! Second favorite of the night.
So, that's it for another week. Chris and Elliott were the bombs tonight. Great performances... great song choices... amazing voices.
Worst tonight? Wow... where do I begin? I wasn't happy with most of them. Bottom three for me? Wow... that's a hard one. Lisa, Kellie, Katharine, and Paris, were all bad in my opinion. I even thought that Bucky was better than them tonight... and THAT is saying something coming from me. | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: niwrad428 | | Thanks for the reviews, guys, but where is Darci? I always look forward to her reviews. I have been more in the background this season than before. I guess I dont' want to jinx any of my favorites this early. I have to laugh but I really don't like some of the contestants that some of you are raving about. I do NOT like Taylor at all. I like the kind of music he does but he doesn't come across to me as sincere. I am SOOOOOOOO ready for Ace, Kellie and Bucky to go HOME!!!!!!!! | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: ProVocalist | | Greetings, friends! I'm Darci Monet, singer/songwriter/freelance writer and this is my weekly critique of the Idol contestants' performances. Hope you enjoy.
It's pouring rain here tonight and very chilly...so unlike California! It's the perfect night for staying in and snuggling up with fun TV shows! I look forward to tonight's theme, songs of the 21st Century. It will be wonderfully refreshing to get out of the oldies for starters, plus I'm quite anxious to see what kinds of songs certain contestants will choose. Most specifically Paris, with her nostalgic vocal tone, Lisa with her musical theater nuances, Katharine with her uber-trained voice and elegant stage presence that so far to me seems perfect for intimate dinner clubs but not arenas (as yet) and Elliott who sings jazzy songs as easily as breathing but seems to struggle a wee bit with edgier fare. And all of this in just ONE HOUR??? Fun! Fun! Fun!
Oh great...Lisa's going to sing Kelly's "Because Of You". Bad idea, little sister. And oh dear God. Um. Alright. She seems awfully excited about a performance that was off pitch half the time...that's gonna smart. I will say that she started out sounding good, her low voice was nice and thick and smoky, but once she started pushing up into her high register (kudos for showing us she even has a high register at all), she couldn't reach the notes. Where is Bird? Where was the coaching Lisa needed to either a) choose a song she can handle or b) learn the technique she needed to hit those notes? Come on already! And don't even get me started on the probability, that like all the other "big songs" she's chosen to perform, she doesn't understand its subject matter remotely. I give her huge kudos for the "no guts no glory" mentality though. She knows she's at risk this week and she at least tried to go out kicking and screaming. It just didn't work. Oh...and remind me to gripe about that STUPID blaring trumpet in the band arrangement later...
And Kellie's (surprise, surprise) singing a country song. Now...personally I've never found Sara Evans' voice or stage presence to be all that exciting or even remotely possessing "star quality"...but wow...Kellie managed to absolutely bore me to tears with that one. I agree with all the judges, she is actually better than that song and I'm not even a fan of her voice. That was a bad, bad idea.
Drops of Jupiter for Ace. So far he's sounding about a hundred percent better than he has in weeks...there's actually tone quality there and he isn't doing that boy band breath release at the end of every phrase. However, I can still see that he lacks breath control in a song that desperately needs it. His stage presence looked uncomfortable and awkward to me. I don't really agree with the judges on this one...I thought he did much better with this simpler melody than with his past choices. I don't get what's going on tonight...very weird vibe. By the way, I have a scar on my chest, too. Do you think Paula will care as much about mine?
And here's Taylor lookin' kinda hip. "Trouble" - I knew he'd choose something rather obscure. Six years of songs and they aren't ALL overplayed on Clear Channel. Now...his vocal sounded gorgeous...really nicely done. His performance was very reserved...and whaddaya know? PAULA GOT IT. Sometimes you just stand and sing, cuz the song speaks for itself. I rather liked this, but was I blown away? Well, not entirely. But it was still a solid performance.
HEY-OH, Mandisa's bringing us to church! Alright...I am not at all familiar with this song (though I have heard of Mary Mary) and it feels like can't quite center on the key. Well...when all was said and done this is just not my favorite performance from her vocally, but I did believe her - this is clearly where her heart is and if for some crazy reason she gets the boot too early I have no doubt she'll end up label mates at Word Records with sweethearted George from season three. I did feel she was giving it her heart and soul. And of course you didn't get it Simon...you're Satan.
Chris is singing Creed. I hate Creed. Good thing I love Chris. He's a hair sharp throughout, but I much prefer him singing to Scott Stapp. This is definitely his thing. His performance was GREAT, though. That's the most into it I've seen him get yet. But man the band is sucking tonight. Whose idea was it to throw a B3 in that arrangement??? What the...? I must bow to Simon on this one though, regardless of the fact that he's been blowing smoke up Chris' butt for weeks now about how great it is that he "doesn't compromise", then turns around and tells him he has to. Pick your poison Simon, you passive aggressive freak!
Katharine's gonna take on Christina Aguilera. And I'm starting to think something's up with the sound. EVERYONE is out of tune tonight and Kat also just flubbed up a cue big time. But that was not a good vocal...zero passion, zero connection, sloppy licks and playing it vocally as safe as possible because Mommy's listening and will have something to say if she sings outside her training box. Folks, I've had enough voice lessons in my life to have heard all the little vocal inflections she did to keep her voice safe. Now yes, that is excellent training but at the same time, she gives herself no wiggle room with which to EMOTE. And oh my GAWD are Paul and Simon on crack? That was nowhere near her personal best and doesn't remotely hold up to Christina. I'm sorry folks. Now I'm just mad. Katharine has a glorious instrument she has yet to even try to tap into. There's so much more there she's not giving us. I can feel it in my bones.
Another shocker...Bucky pulls out some Tim McGraw. Well, he's getting a little more comfortable onstage with every week and he didn't go sharp as often as he usually does. But yes, the diction, the diction, the diction. But dare I say it? This seems to be one of the better performances of the night, whether he was "winging it" or not.
Paris singing a Beyonce song. Well...I hated that song, but she definitely "worked it out" and I'd rather listen to her sing than Beyonce any day of the week. Of anyone tonight, she proved that she could actually fit in the contemporary world. And here I thought she was only old school, so I'll swallow my own pride and admit that I was most concerned about her tonight. I didn't agree with Simon calling her precocious and "a little girl trying to be Beyonce" (Beyonce's barely out of her teens herself for god's sake), because I feels she's had plenty of other performances where she appeared to be trying way harder to be a big girl than tonight. However, she probably needed to hear something other than how amazing she is eventually.
Last up is Elliott and he will be singing "I Don't Wanna Be"...good luck, darlin. Okay honey stop bobbing up and down, you're making me dizzy...use the stage...move...cuz you sound great for the most part! I dug the hipped up arrangment and he really seemed to be enjoying himself tonight. That was one of the better vocal performances of the night for sure and with the exception of the bobbing, one of the few that held my interest.
Okay...I was all excited for tonight's show and sadly it pretty much tanked all around. What was up? I don't have the first clue who's going home tomorrow night because frankly if this was the first time I'd heard all of them none of them were really enough on their game to stay. Anyone's guess, I suppose. I predict a surprise person in the bottom three.
Well...peanut gallery says what? | | Reply To this Message

I wonder if the band caused a lot of the off key singing tonight. I mean, a lot of 'em were off. Hmmmmmmmmmm....

| Posted by: ProVocalist | | I really think something was wrong with the sound rather than the band itself. It was so odd how out of tune everyone was tonight...plus I noticed Taylor plugging one ear (classic "I can't hear myself" sign), Kat's flub up and Elliott missing lines...makes me think there was a monitor problem and they couldn't hear themselves properly.
My problem with the band is whomever is writing the arrangements. A trumpet has no business in that Kelly Clarkson tune and a B3 organ has no place in that Creed song. Come on.
Okay I have GOT to sleep. My eyeballs are drying out and my butt's lost all feeling.
Later, folks! | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: Lawless | | You're more than right, Darci... and I couldn't understand some of those arrangements. They sounded so different... but, what can you do? They have to perform... and do the best that they can, with what they have. Still, it was a bad night. Song choices, for many, weren't right. | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: fuscia | | Tonight we have a special guest rating the performances. My son Damon who will turn 7 in May- yes he made me say that instead of him being six. He will give either a yes or no to each person to tell if he liked them. I was extremely careful not to say anything about my thoughts until after he wrote his own down. Here we go
Lisa She is singing "Because of You" and I know right off that she has made a HUGE mistake. Kelly is on fire now, and Lisa is no Kelly Clarkson. She is off key right off thebat. Aww Damon is already bored with her. She is not at the chorus and he wrote no. He also wrote "yes for Tlr hix " and Taylor is not even on yet. Ewww Lisa wore the hooker blue eye shadow. Fire the stylist!
Damon score
Sherry score
Kellie singing "suds in a bucket". At least the huge eyelashes are gone this week. She sounds shrill at times when she sings. The song is utterly forettable and boring. Damon said "yes", but he really likes blondes.

Sherry score
Ace- uh oh! He is singing "Drops of Jupiter". I am not liking it at all and Ron is in the room and he hates it too. We both agree that Ace has the wrong type of voice to pull it off. He would need a voice with some rasp in it to make it not sound like karioke. I thought the performance was whimpy. Taylor would have rocked on this song.
Damon score
Sherry score meh it was o.k.
TAYLOR! WOOOO! He gave a shout out to us Soul Patrol members! He looks younger this week, and I love the hair and the leather. My first thought is that he can't sing the rumored Seal song. Well , he sang an obscure song called "Trouble". His vocals were wonderful, very amazing. Mystic, yep I love Taylor, but he does the "I gotta pee" stance. I loved that he showed his voice this week. Simon acutally said that it was "an excellent vocal". Simon was wrong when he said the stylist dressed him like Clay. Simon must not remember Clay.

At this point, I am thinking that everyone had a facial this week.
Mandisa "wanna please you" o.k. she is doing a gospel song. That is cool because it comes from her heart. Dang, for once I want her to sing at a different volume than loud. What was with the key/pitch. It sounded off like she was reaching for the key. My friend said that they always do shots of her to show how big her butt is, well they did it this week again. Anyway, I was bored, Damon said she was "really loud". Even Paula said she needed to show more vulnerability= duh? That means turn down the yelling girl.

Damon comment at commercial "Taylor is the greatest singer"
Chris Ha! They brought up the Live thing. At least they put it to rest after a week of internet crap spewing. He sang "what if " by Creed. One volume for him on the whole song and there were pitch problems. He performed well, but just once I want to see this guy without the mike stand. Same old Chris. I want to see another side of him or at least a nuance of something different. He is quickly becoming a one trick pony.
Damon score (his second favorite for the night)
Sherry score (ditto for me so far)
Katherine Uh oh. She is doing "the voice within". That is a hard song to sing. She is doing it like the record, but she sounds like she is reaching for it in a bad way. It sounds kind of forced to me. Is something up tonight because she had a few pitch problems. She didn't sound relaxed at all during the song and that would have made the difference. She didn't get into the song, she just robotically sang it. Sigh, she let me down this week.
Damon score
Sherry score - it was o.k.
Bucky Country for Bucky. That works. Dude, spit the chew out of your mouth because I have no clue what the words are to this song. Good for Bucky, ave for AI.

Paris bleck! What a hiddeous hairstyle on her. She sang "work it out" by Beyonce. I didn't like it. All the tacky butt shaking, yes Beyonce does that, but I hate it when anyone does it. We are not in a strip club, so I dont' need to see ya shake your butt. I didn't like it at all.
Damon score
Mommy score
Elliott "I don't want to be". Hmmm a risk. Wow he sounds good! I could do without the boy band bounce he is doing, but he looks like he is having fun. Good for you Elliott!
