| Posted by: fuscia | | American Idol star Carrie Underwood has broken a country music record by becoming the fastest-selling debut artist ever.
Album 'Some Hearts' has been certified double platinum after making it past the two million sales market.
And Nielsen SoundScan say that makes the album the fastest-selling debut country album in history.
Underwood can thank a Christmas surge in sales for her record-breaking success - fans bought up 400,000 copies in the week leading up to Christmas. | | Reply To this Message

Anthony Fedorov courted by record labels
WITH his blond, boy-band good looks, Ukraine-born Fedorov captured hearts with a passion for ballads and a moving life story, including a doctor's prediction that a childhood tracheotomy would prevent him from speaking.
The 20-year-old, whose signature spectacles played hide-and-seek during the season, climbed to the final four before his record skipped.
Since then, Fedorov has been hitting the awards show circuit, appearing most recently on VH1's Big In 05, and will be featured in a celebrity episode of Fear Factor airing in the US next month.
He has also been meeting with A-list songwriters and producers in Los Angeles and New York City.
Several record labels are courting him, and he expects to make a decision later this month.
His debut album, which may include three songs he penned, could be released in later this year.
Constantine Maroulis gets big fat Greek TV family?
HE shockingly finished in sixth place over the less talented Anthony Fedorov and Scott Savol.
But there's no love lost when it comes to the shaggy-haired rocker with the bedroom eyes, who has been featured on People magazine's Sexy At Every Age list.
Maroulis deems his exit from the series 'the best thing that ever happened to me'.
The 30-year-old New Yorker embarked on a solo tour in the Philippines (much to the delight of his diehard Pinoy followers), has two East Coast shows under his belt and launches a North American tour with his band, Pray For The Soul Of Betty, this week.
Maroulis is also currently developing an ABC sitcom with Frasier star Kelsey Grammer's production company, which will be loosely based on his own rags-to-riches life and the crazy characters of his extended Greek-American family.
In addition to the TV deal, the singing heart-throb has also been been busy recording his solo album and auditioning for movie roles.

Other news: Zachary

At a time when the unlikely romance movie Brokeback Mountain has become a monster hit with American audiences, it's ironic that homosexuality may not be as welcome on America's most popular TV show, American Idol on Fox, reports TMZ.com.
Effeminate male contestants often sing at their own peril. ''I don't mean this disrespectfully . . . shave off your beard and wear a dress,'' a scowling judge Simon Cowell told rejected Idol wannabe Charles Berry. Fellow judge Randy Jackson had this pointed question for Zachary Travis, another reject: ``Are you a girl?''
The show hasn't exactly adopted the Seinfeld mantra: ''Not that there's anything wrong with it.'' Idol host Ryan Seacrest and Cowell have frequently traded on-air insults, each implying the other is gay.
The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation has issues with American Idol's tone. A GLAAD spokesperson told TMZ: ``GLAAD is reaching out to the show's producers to discuss our concerns -- and the concerns of community members and allies -- who have contacted us about this matter.''
Jim Verraros, a gay finalist from American Idol's first season, feels the tone comes from the top. He tells TMZ, ``I honestly think that if I had come out [as gay] while I was on the show, Fox would've edited it out.''
Some don't agree with the outcry.
''The critics totally miss the point,'' says Lisa Gregorisch-Dempsey, senior executive producer of the TV show Extra. ``No one is exempt from the razor tongues of all three judges. Who goes on the show thinking it's a Miss Manners tea party?''

What a crock of CRAP!! This show isn't about your sexuality. It's about your VOICE! All three judges, and those above them, can kiss MY white butt. Their attitudes stink, and I will NEVER watch AI for anything other than the contestants. What the judges say has NO measure on me, at all. They are all pieces of crap for many reasons.. but, the way they treated Zachary, was appalling.

| Posted by: Delta | | The Judges have no right to critique someones sexuality!!
They are supposed to be listening to the talent. Guess they forgot that part of their position. Just being mean and hurtful is a downer for all of us who respect each other.
It appears the Judges have way too much say over the content of the auditions and the show. WAY too much power

Maroulis came in 3rd on 'Idol,' but he's a winner now
By JONATHAN TAKIFF
takiffj@phillynews.com 215-854-5960
Young performers' self-delusions continue to be ruthlessly exposed on the early episodes of season five of "American Idol."
Yeah, there's an appalling (but not to be missed) train wreck happening every couple minutes on the Fox superhit.
Thankfully, there is also light at the end of the tunnel for those who endure the filter-down (or frog-kissing) process. Proof positive will be onstage Wednesday at TLA, where the talent who I believe stole the show last season will come on strong with his rock band, Pray for the Soul of Betty.
Constantine Maroulis scored third in 2005's "Idol" competition, down to the wire with his long-haired-rocker rival Bo Bice, but both falling sway to the divide-and-conquer tactics of singularly focused country girl Carrie Underwood.
Maroulis was the undeniable vocal champ last year and clearly the most seasoned, professional performer ever to stare down the lens of the "Idol" camera. But watching him, the thought (and fear) often crossed my mind that he was too hip for the room - too dexterous, daring and unpredictable.
How could the mass viewing audience keep its collective focus on him when Maroulis refused to be typecast, coming on as a salt-of-the-earth rocker one week, a dewy-eyed balladeer the next, and a highfalutin, glammed-up pop-opera singer (bellowing Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody") after that?
"Too much variety. Hmmm, that's an interesting argument to explain how things came out," Maroulis said in a recent phone chat. "What's so great about this show is that everyone has their opinions and theories. It's like when you watch a football game and shout out, 'God, if that coach had only done blah-blah-blah.'
"I welcome everyone's opinion about what went down. But I went into it with my eyes open, wanting to be myself. I like all kinds of music and wanted to show what I can do, without thinking about the consequences."
Though he lost the big prize, "I think I won the underdog title," Maroulis continued. "People are still talking about Constantine, which is kind of cool. If I had it to do all over again - and of course, I'd love to - I wouldn't take it any differently."
We were dramatically introduced to Maroulis on "Idol" as the New York-based, Greek-American frontman of Pray for the Soul of Betty - a striver who was risking the collective ire of his rock group by sidestepping into something as conventional and uncool as a TV talent contest.
Only later (and not on the show) did we learn that Maroulis had quite the serious history in the arts, having graduated from the Boston Conservatory in 2002 with a bachelor of arts in musical theater.
After that came a year-plus stint as a principal actor/singer in the touring company of "Rent," which included a "memorable stay in Philly," he recalled. "My brother lived there for a while. And the city has a great arts scene."
At the music, dance and theater school, Maroulis put his voice through rigorous training with a heavy accent on opera singing - as tough as it gets.
On a recent solo tour, though, he exposed mostly his "classic pop vocal" side with material ranging "from Nat 'King' Cole and Sam Cooke to Bruce Springsteen and Chicago stuff, but also slipping in the Doors, a Gavin DeGraw tune and a song from the rock musical 'Hedwig and the Angry Inch.' "
With Pray for the Soul of Betty, we'll get a "totally different character, my aggressive alter-ego, underground rock thing," he assessed. "But we also do some acoustic stuff, some great new original ballads, and cover tunes from Led Zeppelin, Stone Temple Pilots, Bob Marley and Queen. Tell the fans it's going to be awesome."
If the man had to limit himself to singing just one type of music today, what would it be?
"Hmmm, that's tough. Maybe showtunes," Maroulis replied with a laugh. Which made me ponder, has he had any offers to do Broadway? Maybe the lure of joining a long-running hit?
"We're trying to figure that out. Maybe next year. But right now, I've got some huge commitments to fulfill."
Maroulis is talking about a TV sitcom that would star him as a character "much like myself, growing up in Brooklyn, the youngest of three unmarried brothers in a big Greek family with a crazy father and mother."
Actor/producer Kelsey Grammer approached Maroulis with the idea. Caryn Lucas ( "Miss Congeniality," "The Nanny") just finished the pilot script, and ABC has first dibs to put it on the air, maybe next fall, said Maroulis.
He's also in the pre-production phase for a debut solo album. "Right now, I'm gathering material and thinking about the producers. Talk is cheap, but this really is a done deal. We've got a label. It's just a question of timing. Ideally, it should come out at the same time as the TV show, to maximize the impact of both."
This time, the oft-impulsive Maroulis is definitely thinking the process through. |

| Posted by: hica19 | | Last I heard...Anthony has alreaday finished recording his two albums (yes...TWO albums. One in spanish, one in English). It's not released yet though. Should be out either sometime in late spring or during the summer. The phone call was from Saturday after he performed at the Cherry Blossom Parade in Washington DC. I'm a very avid member of Anthonyfanclub.com, and 50 members from there went to see him perform. I entrusted a few of those members with my phone number in case anything special happened. Afterwards, they all hooked up together for lunch...including Anthony's personal friends, and Anthony himself! So when Anthony appeared at the restaurant, ther was a mad rush of autographs, phone calls, etc. The people I have given my phone number to called me and let me talk to Anthony. Conversation was really short because I kept on blanking out on what I wanted to say. I was just shocked in a good way. Been on cloud 9 eversince that phone call. not only that, I also talked to two of anthony's friends. They are all soooooooooo sweet. One of them is such a tease though. He playfully growled at me "raaaaaaaaaaawrrrrrr" when I requested he ask Anthony to spray his cologne on the meet and greet t-shirt I bought and sent to one of the parade goers in case there was a real meet and greet (which there was). The person holding the phone was one of the members I gave my phone number to.
Speaking of more Anthony news...he's going to be on American Idol Extra this Thursday night. It's going to show him perform two new songs I think from his upcoming albums.
Oh and he's going to be on Fear Factor during the summer! | | Reply To this Message

She has a good voice but ( being an amateur of course and lacking the background of Pro Vocalist, has an opinion) She will be picked up by someones label. but is she marketable Not in my opinion. Whereas Taylor will go far , Ace will apppeal to a CERTAIN area as will Chris and Elliot. AND Simon sorry ,Taylor is winning this year.
It really bugs me the way he constantly finds somethng wrong with everyone but whom he likes.

Somehow, I have a feeling it will be a guy this year. I believe that Elliott has the best male voice, but I know he won't win. I'm not going to be a happy camper if the Idol is a rocker. I like Chris as a person, but I hate what he sings. | | Reply To this Message

The great thing is... if the person you don't like, wins, you don't have to purchase their album. I was VERY unhappy in seasons two, and three, with Ruben, and then Fantasia, winning. Couldn't stand their voices, or their music. So, I just didn't buy their cds.

I absolutely couldn't stand Fantasia, and I thought Diana was so much more qualified. As for Season 2, in any other year, I probably would have been happy with Ruben winning. I thought he was a real nice guy with a great voice, but because he was stacked up against Clay, I was not happy that he won. In my mind, Clay was, and is, the most talented singer to come down the pike in all five seasons.

People are very suspicious of this show being rigged. Nigell the exec. producer of Idol is set to recieve thousands of postcards this week from the Soul Patrol proclaiming our devotion to Taylor and that we are vocally supporting him. Kind of like a pre-shennanigans declaration.

| Posted by: Delta | | I found this article that seems to agree with you gals about ages of the Guest artists.
I was surprised to read, however, that the younger singers don't want any part of Idol even though they get the big exposure. Oh Idol I dol are you falling down to the pits?
Here is the piece:
Could 'Idol' use some younger blood?
Not a lot of tears shed for Bucky, apparently. People, where's your compassion? Seriously, it was more of a "what took so long?" sentiment. And if your comments have any predictive value, Ace should be quaking in whatever kind of footwear he favors. (To be honest, I've never really noticed.)
Meanwhile, could this show skew any older? I touched on this earlier, but the geezer factor is totally out of hand. Here's a number for you: 242 -- the combined ages of Barry Manilow, Kenny Rogers, Stevie Wonder and Rod Stewart. Average: 60.5. (The three main Queen guys average a relatively juvenile 56.3.)
As a few of you have theorized, one reason for this preponderance of elders is that there's a scarcity of younger, more current artists who are willing to be associated with Idol. Sure, being seen by 30 million people is attractive, but the potential credibility damage seems to be a bad trade-off in their minds.
That's a shame. It probably deprives us of such treats as Emo Night with Fall Out Boy or Falsetto Night with James Blunt (Ace's big chance) or an opportunity for the Idols to sing the songs of Pink. OK, all of those sound ludicrous, but it sure wouldn't hurt to get a little more contemporary. | | Reply To this Message

I think that it really says something when Ruben wins, and Clay comes in second... yet WHO sold more albums? You can NOT tell me that they didn't rig season two.
And you're right about Diana DeGarmo. I'm a pretty big fan of hers. We listen to her cd pretty frequently, and think that it's a wonderful collection of songs.

Local ex-Idol predicts a win for …
By JO CIAVAGLIA
Bucks County Courier Times
Around this time last year, “American Idol” finalist Anthony Fedorov was singing in tune every week. This year, he’s tuning in every week.
Yeah, America sent his ballad-belting butt home, but that doesn’t mean the Lower Southampton resident doesn’t still watch the wildly popular reality show.
After all, Fedorov knows exactly how it feels to perform before millions of TV viewers. He also knows how it feels when host Ryan Seacrest breaks the news that you aren’t the next American Idol — in front of millions of TV viewers.
Been there. Sung that. And that. Yeah, that one, too.
Last spring, the amateur Bucks County nightclub singer outperformed more than 100,000 competitors, followed by eight fellow finalists, on the wildly popular reality show “American Idol.” A year ago this week, Fedorov fever broke after America voted off the final four finalist.
Now people are hunting him down, asking who he thinks will be this season’s winner. Here’s what he says.
Sexy Chris Daughtry: “A rocker with a really, really great voice”
Dance machine Taylor Hicks: “A ton of energy, incredible performer. He’s fun to watch. He commands that stage.”
Girly-girl Katherine McPhee: “Beautiful and talented.”
Soulful Elliott Yamin: “He’s an incredible vocalist. He has a lot of soul in him, and he’s a really, really good kid.”
On Tuesday — just hours before this week’s Elvisthemed show —Fedorov, who turned 21 last week, had plenty to say about this year’s final four. What he won’t talk about is who is going home this week — or who he thinks is going to win.
He doesn’t want his opinion to sway America’s votes.
“It’s a little bit more personal for me,” Fedorov said. “You don’t want to see people go home.”
With his blond, boy-band good looks and signature eyeglasses that played hide-andseek during his Idol season, the Ukrainian-born Fedorov captured hearts with a passion for love songs and a moving life story that included a doctor’s prediction that a childhood tracheotomy would prevent him from speaking.
Federov was the second Bucks resident to crack the Idol finals. Doylestown’s Justin Guarini was the first season’s first runner-up.
Federov said he’s determined to keep his career on fast forward. He has started recording his debut album for BMI records. An initial summer release date has been postponed so it doesn’t coincide with this year’s Idol winner’s album.
“You don’t want to compete with the winner,” he said.
He plans the album release date to coincide with the start of next season’s “American Idol.” He did make one prediction: His new album will “shock” a lot of people.
So far, fame is treating him well. He’s recognized most places he goes. Life is sweet.
“To be in this position, and wake up every morning and know you have a huge following is incredible,” Federov said.
He still keeps in touch with most of the former Idol finalists, including last year’s winner, country cutie Carrie Underwood. They talk on the phone several times a week, he said.
Fedorov admits watching Idol after appearing on it does feel a little weird.
“I know what they are feeling and what they are going through,” he said. “I know how tough it is to be on that show.”
