That being said, perhaps the original inhabitants of Zion built the city and developed the technology over hundreds and hundreds of years. And they have only been able to battle the Machines for the past century. This would mean that far more time has passed in human history.
Another train of thought is that Zion was 'as-is' when the latest batch of humans found it. Maybe when the Machines destory Zion, they leave the technology behind. But then they would know where Zion is. And wouldn't the newly freed humans wonder where all of it came from?
Or, perhaps there are dozens of underground dwellings, maybe empty, that humans created before the humans above ground went extinct.
And finally, we have the looming notion that the so-called 'Real World' is just another Matrix.
What do you think? Am I missing something?
