I noticed the Lawless avatar and Mystics avatar were of witch's, and I did some research and found they were both from the play called Wicked.

Was reading up on it and it looked interesting, so I started a thread.

Long before Dorothy dropped in, two other girls meet in the Land of Oz. One, born with emerald-green skin, is smart, fiery and misunderstood. The other is beautiful, ambitious and very popular. How these two unlikely friends end up as the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good Witch makes for the most spellbinding new musical in years.

WICKED, the untold story of the witches of Oz, features music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz (Godspell, Pippin, Academy Award winner for Pocahontas and The Prince of Egypt) and book by Winnie Holzman ("My So Called Life," "Once And Again" and "thirtysomething"), and is based on the best-selling novel by Gregory Maguire. With musical staging by Tony Award winner Wayne Cilento (Aida, The Who's Tommy, How To Succeed...), WICKED is directed by 2003 and 2004 Tony Award winner Joe Mantello (Assassins, Take Me Out, Frankie & Johnny in the Clair de Lune).

Well, that's about all I got, cept to say, I think the wicked green witch is the CUTE one.

I wouldn't mind seeing this, but will have to wait for the movie, cause I don't plan any trips to New York in the near future.

Actually, Wicked is currently playing, in different cities throughout the US. It will be here, in San Diego, in July. I know that it was just recently in the St Louis area, because Mystic went to see it, and had GREAT seats.

If you've read the book, you will find some similarities to the musical... but, it's still different.

I, for one, and a Wicked OBSESSED fan. I listen to the soundtrack, at least, once per day. The story, told in a musical fashion, is moving. The story of Elphaba (the wicked witch of the west) will cause you to fall in love with her. To find that Glinda isn't as "Good" as the title that was given her, by the wizard.... or, that the wizard himself, is as wonderful as was thought.

All I can say is, at least hear the soundtrack, and let it touch your soul.... it's amazing, and filled with such power. Idina Menzel, who played the original Elphaba on Broadway, has a voice that will break your heart, and cause your soul to soar to new heights, as you follow her along from birth, til death.

Is the actress who plays the witch, the same in all the cities?

I'm not big on plays, but I went to a site and saw a very long pictorial of the play, and it looks really neato.

The same actresses and actors that played on Broadway are not the same in the other cities.

Kristin Chenoweth (Glinda) and Idina Menzel (Elpheba..she won the Tony award for this show for best actress) did the Broadway production.

I went to the opening night in St. Louis at the Fox Theater...

Gotta tell you...it was awesome! Though, I think I would have rather seen the original actors, but it was great nonetheless.

The book is really good as well, but the story is slightly different than the play....I wont give away the differences for those that might want to read it, and see it and compare...but they are different in many ways.

Mystic... did you know that the guy who played Justin on QaF, played Boq, for awhile? One of my best friends has heard him, and said that his voice is AMAZING!

I've heard Shoshana, who played Elphaba after Idina did. She's got a beautiful voice..... but, I'm just an Idina fan, through and through.

Oh, have you looked at the book, The Grimmerie? I got that for my bday, and I LOVE it.

BTW, nikiTa... it might interest you to know that Idina Menzel is the original Maureen, from RENT. She was in the movie that you just saw. *sigh*

Yes, that's what prompted my above reaction.

I don't know if this pitter patter heart can take much more of watching and hearing Idina in the dark surrounded by friends and strangers!

Please tell me she doesn't wear those same black pants as she did in Rent. Please, no!

I really hope my friends don't mandate me going to this movie too! It's just not fair!

By the way, do you know off hand what ethnicity she is? That name sounds Brazilian or something??? I've tried to find out, but I'll keep searching.
And, please, for pity sake's don't tell me she's Jewish.

I want to see this play. I doubt we'll get it out here though.

We only just got Rent, and I seriously don't want to see that

I havent heard Shoshana...Sephanie Block played Elphaba in St. Louis. She was good, but no where near the calibur of Menzel.

I havent read The Grimmerie, but I did see a copy of the book that they were selling at the theater.

I had no idea that Rady Harrison had played Boq...thats wild!

Have you read the book "Wicked?" I couldnt believe how different the play was to the book...not way off, but so many changes, and characters that were not even mentioned in the play.

They have the Sequel of the book out. Its called "Son of a Witch." Like I said, there will be characters in the book that people wont know if they only saw the play. I havent had time to read this one, but I will be starting it soon.

You need to read Wicked.

Different actors out here in Taiwan. I think its in Chinese too... I'm not sure. But the story doesn't appeal to me anyway.

Mystic.... Stephanie has a wonderful voice but, you're right... she is NOT Idina. There is just a powerhouse inside of that woman!!!! She brings me to tears when she sings. Oh, esp in "The Wizard and I" when she has the vision. "Someday there will be a celebration throughout Oz that's all to do with me" The first time I heard that, I was at work, and just started crying.

Yes, I've got the book, and it's different, and not as enticing as the show. But, it's still a good book. Don't know when I will get "Son of a Witch" but I'm sure that I will soon. Just have too many books on my plate right now.

Yes, Randy played Boq... and I would have LOVED to have seen that show. I can so picture him in that part.

The movie isn't there yet, I take it?

No worries, my best friend liked the music but thought the storyline was "stupid."
But she "liked" Maureen (Idina) too so that salvaged the $9.00.

The book was really interesting .. his other books are decent, too .. a good twist to those old classics and fairytales.

The book isn't as good as the musical. I think that they did a much better job taking it to the stage, and changing it up a bit. Then again, I'm infactuated, obsessed, and everything else you can say, with Wicked.
