Dr. Marvin Candle/ The film |

| Posted by: Sandy June | | I just found this guys ideas on another sight. There is speculation Dr. Candle is on the island somewhere still and that he has the disease if there is one. I just watched the film again. He says even worse if you use the computer for anything but entering the numbers there could be another incident .
The "even worse" part meant that if they try to communicate with the outside world they could commprimise the project. But the incident would be even worse than commprimising the project. He also said the hatch they are in is hatch number 3. Therefore, there is one more hatch we don't know about or is that where Danielle is? | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: Sandy June | | There is speculation he only has one arm. O.K. here is where I got that idea.

Recently, from my various obsessive Lost internet information binges, I came across information from some spoiler site called spoilerfix.com, which had an obscure clue about the orientation video, which was simply to watch the scientist's left arm during the course of the film. I had noticed all along he didn't move it much, but gave it no second thought. So I watched the show again, and it became pretty apparent to me that its a prosthetic. The hand doesn't move at all in its fixed position, and the upper forearm appears to be at an odd angle through his coat sleeve.
So yeah, okay, he may not have a left arm. What the hell does that mean? I still didn't have the foggiest how it had anything to do with anything on the show whatsoever, and then I remembered something from Exodus part 1. A specific quote amongst Danielle's warning to the group as they're entering the Dark Territory. |

So then I got interested, as there is, in some sense some sort of a tie-in. What could it mean? Well the first thought is, maybe Candle=Montand, that the narrator to this film was actually one of Danielle's crew. If we consider that the date at the end of the film (1980) is accurate, though, then that's eight years too early, as Danielle and her team did not shipwreck on the Island until 1988.
Second theory, perhaps we're being shown a subtle similarity between Candle and a member of Danielle's team to show that Candle has been before, and possibly still is, on the Island, and that maybe this entire film has been filmed from that very location. Or, that Candle lost the arm by the same means which Montand did, and thus himself is infected with this mysterious sickness? All things which would put the legitimacy of the film to even more question. |

Missing Piece The reel in Station Three was missing a substantial length of film, which turned out to be in Arrow Station, hidden in a cored-out Bible. It was returned to the station by Eko.
The missing piece contains a part of the monologue where Dr. Marvin Candle, the narrator, explicitly states that the station computer should not be used to contact the outside world. To do so, according to Candle, would "compromise the integrity of the project", and could possibly lead to another "incident". Immediately after this scene Micheal, in the other room, notices the words 'Hello?' on the screen and, finding the keyboard now works despite the final countdown stage not having started, uses the computer to contact someone who may, or claims to be, Walt.
[edit]
Purpose of the Initiative
The Dharma Initiative's stated goals are to allow station teams to work in seclusion on projects. Station 3 was set up to study the electromagnetic features on "that part of the island."
Station 3's film states that it is 3 of 6, which suggests there are a total of six stations. One of these - apparently destroyed or abandoned - for unspecified reasons - is the 'Arrow' station, intermittently occupied by the tail-end surviors.
[edit]
Questions
Could the "Incident" have to do with the Others?
How did the missing film piece get into the Arrow station?
What is the meaning of the glass eye? Could it belong to Dr. Candle?
Dr. Marvin Candle
Dr. Marvin Candle narrates the Station Three orientation filmPlayed by: François Chau
Appears in: Orientation, What Kate Did
Profession: The Dharma Initiative Research
Dr. Candle is the narrator for an orientation film, dated 1980, which is stored in the underground bunker known as "Station Three." He introduces the Dharma Initiative, its principal architects, the DeGroots and Alvar Hanso, and describes its background and that of the station. He also directs newly recruited occupants to follow the strict procedure of entering the numbers into the terminal every 108 minutes. His left arm appears to be a prosthetic.
Interestingly,Desmond takes a book with him into the woods when he flees, according to an MSNBC article, which also says the book is The Third Policeman. That book features (about twenty pages or so in) a character, thought to be dead but alive, whose left arm appears to be inoperable. |

| Posted by: Sandy June | | I just watched the first film again. You all may already know this but I just realized he said that they have to push the button because of the incident that accured not long after the project started. So they are pushing the button to prevent another incident. Maybe the magnatism pulled a plane out of the sky and a ship out of the sea? | | Reply To this Message

That wouldn't explain the black smoke thingy that blew up the plane engine, and also that Locke saw in the jungle.
It's more than simple magnets. Who is scared of a magnet?
Not me. I fear not the magnet. Bring it on!!!
I'd take out some stupid magnet.

| Posted by: Whidden | | I might go with the glass eye is Candle's.
And I think his arm is a fake.
I don't think we will see him on the show anymore though, unless they do some major makeup work. they would have to put 25 years on him to get his current age.
I was flipping channels, and saw the actor who plays him on one of those law and order shows, or CSI shows. He is a spooky looking fellow. | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: Whidden | | I remembered a bible quote about this, so I searched and found it.
Man, this show is just like the Matrix, throwing levels and levels of subtle side issues at you, most of which I wonder if we even notice.

If the glass eye is his. Which I think it is. He was on the island at one time. I will have to admit with the 25 years thing we won't see him on the island again.
I think there are more pieces of the film somewhere we haven't seen. Why would they cut it up like that in the first place? | | Reply To this Message

How did Rousseau know?
Doctor Marvin Candle in an anagram for "Montand Liar Cover". In Season One, when Rousseau reached the Black Rock, she said this is where "Montand lost his arm".
How would Rousseau have known that Montand had lost his arm there? I thought that she was also drawn to the island by "the numbers", and had not planned to visit the island, so would not have been a part of the Dharma Initiative project. She told Sayid that she was on a research expedition at the time her group was drawn to the island. do we know what kind ot research her team was doing?
Also, the orientation film showing Candle with one arm is dated 1980, while Rousseau wouldn't have reached the island until 1988 or 1989. How could she have known about this event of Montand/Candle losing an arm if it happened at least 8-9 years prior to her arrival. Has she been in communication with someone? The others? How can we say that Montand and Candle are the same person?
--BrianSTL 14:25, 18 November 2005 (PST)
First of all, Rousseau could easily have been lying to Sayid. Second of all, as LOST co-creator Damon Lindelof has said on many occasions, it was never confirmed that the crash happened in 2004. What if it happened in 1995? Then, Rousseau would have been on the island since '79. --Novajoe23 16:54, 21 November 2005 (PST)
But the crash had to be at least after 2003, because of Shannon's reference to "Finding Nemo."
Correct. Kate was also listening to an iPod. It could have happened after '04, though. And the episodes where the Red Sox are referenced were shot before they won the World Series, so that doesn't count. --Novajoe23 20:33, 25 November 2005 (PST)
from The Numbers page: "found oceanic bag tag === J/SHEPHARD 09SEPT21 / 4815162342 IT IS IN ROUSSEAU'S BUNKER (NO JOKE) " ...Wouldn't this mean that the plane crash occurred in 2021? --BrianSTL 10:38, 29 November 2005 (PST)
In "Hearts and Minds", Shannon sarcastically said that she didn't think that they could issue an "amber alert" in order to help find Claire. When were "amber alerts" introduced?...I'm thinking sometime within the past ten years. --BrianSTL 10:38, 29 November 2005 (PST)

The text at the bottom of the screen has now changed. it reads: " "The most interesting thing here isn't even the carrot-munching rabbit in the cage, but the number on its back. Not a six, not a four, not nineteen-point-five. It's an eight. This is what we're looking at, and we all see it. I didn't tell you. You didn't ask me. I never opened my mouth and you never opened yours. We're not even in the same year together, let alone the same room . . . except we are together. We're close. We're having a meeting of the minds." Title screen: The Dharma Initiative/3 of 6/Orientation. Then we see the image of the Swan and then the Dharma logo/Orientation/Station 3/The Swan.
Narration: Welcome, I'm Dr. Marvin Candle, and this is the orientation film for Station 3 of the Dharma Initiative. In a moment you'll be given a simple set of instructions for how you and your partner will fulfill the responsibilities associated with the station. But first, a little history.
The Dharma Initiative was created in 1970, and it is the brainchild of Gerald and Karen DeGroot -- two doctoral candidates at the University of Michigan. Following in the footsteps of visionaries such as B.F. Skinner [there is a jump cut/splice here] imagined a large scale communal research compound where scientists and free thinkers from around the globe could pursue research in meteorology, psychology, parapsychology, zoology, electromagnetism, and utopian social [splice] Danish industrialist and munitions magnate Alvar Hanso whose financial backing made their dream of a multi-purpose social science research facility a reality.
You and your partner are currently located in Station 3, or the Swan, and will be for the next 540 days. Station 3 was originally constructed as a laboratory where scientists could work to understand the unique electromagnetic fluctuations emanating from this sector of the island.
Not long after the experiments began, however, there was an incident. And since that time the following protocol has been observed: every 108 minutes the button must be pushed. From the moment the alarm sounds you will have 4 minutes to enter the code into the microcomputer processor [splice] induction into the program. When the alarm sounds, either you or your partner must input the code. It is highly recommended that you and your partner take alternating shifts. In this manner you will stay as fresh and alert [splice] utmost importance that when the alarm sounds the code be entered correctly, and in a timely fashion. Do not attempt to use the computer [splice] for anything [splice]. Congratulations, until your replacements arrive, the future of the project is in your hands. On behalf of the DeGroots, Alvar Hanso and all of us at the Dharma Initiative, thank you. Namaste. And good luck.

Maybe the good doctor himself cut up the film. Left part of it in arrow bunker, with the glass eye.
Maybe other bunkers will have his arm, and the model of the Geometric disk.
