NEW YORK (AP) -- Tom Cruise has made an unusual purchase for his fiancee Katie Holmes -- one that will let them see the development of their baby.

"I bought a sonogram machine," Cruise says on ABC's "Barbara Walters Presents: The 10 Most Fascinating People of 2005," to air November 29 (10 p.m. ET). Excerpts of the interview are published in the latest issue of People magazine, on newsstands Friday.

The 43-year-old actor said the couple will do their own sonograms, which show fetus development with ultrasound waves. Cruise said he will donate the machine to a hospital after the baby is born. Sonogram machines range in cost from $25,000 to $200,000.

Holmes' pregnancy was announced in early October. The couple, who have been dating since April, became engaged in June.

"We are gonna get married next summer or early fall," Cruise told Walters. "We don't have a date set yet."

Cruise said he doesn't know if the baby is a boy or a girl. He has two adopted children, Connor, 10, and Isabella, 12, from his marriage to Nicole Kidman. It will be the first child for 26-year-old Holmes

Leave it to this wacko to think that sonograms are for fun. They should be done by a qualified person.

He may want to have invested in a home paternity tester before the sonogram.

Yep, this guy is an idiot. I suppose he thinks he's qualified to identify what a sonogram is capable of detecting too, right?

I have never liked him, but only because I can't stand to look at him, and I never knew until this past year that he is as creepy as he is.

I used to LOVE Tommy.... but, since Katie entered the picture, he's really gone off the edge, and I think that his brains got scrambled, or something. And Nikita... I'm TOTALLY with ya on that After all, it's "rumored" that his first marriage ended because she wanted to have children, and he couldn't "Produce" and then, he and Nicole don't get pregnant, and adopt. Hmmmmmmmmmmmm..... makes one think, right?

The latest craziness to come out is the Scientology requires that women are serene, calm and quiet during childbirth. Tom has defended the religious belief saying that Katie can make SOME noise, but it's simply that a quiet environment for the birth is required to give the child a calm entrance into the world.

Is it possible to not make noise during child birth unless you're 100% unconcious? I'm going to scream by bloody head off!!!!

Yeah, I've heard of this, and it cracks me up! I hope that he uses his money to NUMB her body, from the neck down, because she's going to be in pain. What's going to happen during a contraction and she screams? Will he say, "That's it, you blew it... the kids mine, hit the road!" Sheesh... some people!

What planet does this guy think he lives on?

Obviously one where women can be dictated to on what level of pain is an appropriate amount to experience during childbirth.

Maybe it's a good thing she's pregnant - I would hate to hear what the punishment would be when she has a bad case of menstrual cramping.

I say Katie should grab him well "There" with each contraction and squeeze hard. Let's see who is the first to cry out in pain.
