Has anyone made the switch from a traditional landline to VOIP?

I have been considering it, but I would first love to hear from experienced users what the sound quality is like before I make a commitment and cancel services with my phone company.

The provider I am thinking of using offers 911 services, so that's a useful bonus.

What about when it goes down - is it because of the technology, itself, or is it usually because of internet connectivity problems?
