| Posted by: Whidden | | Well, you know, it's just a birdhouse, I'm not the best carpenter in the world,
shoot, it's hard to cut a straight edge with a handsaw.
But I had a fun time doing it. I'm not finished yet, still needs a lot of work.
I stained it, and the stain is gooped up in places and not dry.
I will take more pics of it later in the daylight, when I get finished with the whole thing.
I made a door, a log pile and a bench on the front porch, you can't see them good in this pic, will get more detail later.

I had no horses, nor birds. I did have a old model of my redneck truck.
And before you say, "OH NO HE DIDN'T!!!",
let me say, yes I did.
I put that sucker on the birdhouse.
I'm out of control, I know it. But hey, I like the way it looks, and the birds will love it,
and I can always go and take it down later.
I also added a set of pine trees I got in wyoming years back. I stained the front of them years ago,
and I tried a new deal with streaking on the back of them last night, but the streaks came out sorry looking.
Oh well, I learned a lot, and they are on the back side of the birdhouse.
And I spent so much time on the top part, but when the thing is mounted, you can just see it from the bottom.
But I can see it from the porch too, so I'm more or less happy with it.
I did learn a lot about what will work and what wont, so my next birdhouse will be BETTER-ER.
Next time, I will see what I can do about getting wooden truck, so it will blend better.
I took some pics, I had to stand on a ladder for some of them.

| Posted by: Whidden | | No birds yet, our other bird house went almost a whole year before birds moved in.
However, i put a boatload of bird seed all over it after I took the pics,
a bunch in the pickup bed, a bunch on the roof, all over the ground.
So, they will know it's there and maybe move in soon.
I'v got a postive attitude, maybe get some in there in a few weeks,
then I will kill them and cook them on my bar-b-q, and it' will be some good eats!!!
I'v gone too far. No, just let them live in peace and enjoy their beauty. | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: Whidden | | I made a second one, and decided to go for a totally different look.
I wanted tacky colors, like yellow and light blue, and green. I also went to the local hobby store, and got some cheapo trees, a couple of park benchs, an old truck, etc.
And a stone walkway.
I made some windows out of board and matchsticks.
I had a pewter cowboy dude with a wheelbarrow full of gold, and put him up as kind of a weather-vane thingy at roof top.
A guy at work had a big piece of rose marble and broke it, and gave it to me,
I busted it up with a hammer, and made small cubes of them, and made a privacy fence out of it.
It's the tackiest thing you ever seen. Which is what I was shooting for.
(The next birdhouse will be a log cabin style fort, with no paint.)
I tried some floresent yellow on the windows, etc, and put a black light on it, and it' looked so very cool at night, I took a pic.
But, it was too tacky, even for this project, it hurt my eyes when it was just in the normal light. (looked awesome with the blacklight on it, I hated to lose it).
So I went with a flat yellow, and it came out better.
I don't have it mounted on the pole yet, will do that someday.
Work has put me on 12 hours days, and working Sundays as well.
So, I got no time to take care of the important stuff.
Like building birdhouses.
Anyhow, I found a fun hobby.
Though, after the log cabin fort, I think I will quit.
3 huge birdhouses is enough.
This one I just built is humongous, it's made of 4x4's on the bottom, and I can barely lift it.
Those rocks don't help. | | Reply To this Message
|
| Posted by: Whidden | | I put the black light back on it, and parts of the floresent paint is still on there, so parts of it still glow.
You know what would be neat, is a glow in the dark train. Paint it floresent colors, then put a black light on it, and let it go around the track.
I bet kids would love that. | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: Whidden | | I made a third birdhouse, but I'm not done painting it. I will post it later. I made it 8 feet high and 8 inches wide. So it's a skyscraper.
It has 10 holes in it, so it's 10 birdhouses in one.
I went out today with muffin and was walking around the yard, and was watching the birds, and was amazed at how many different ones I seen.
It's a bird zoo out there. I sat in the yard chair towards the end of the property and watched them about an hour.
I was going to get the camera and take pics, but then I figured, why bother with all that? Any bird I see, I can find a better pic of it on the net anyhow.
So, I got on the net and got some pics of the birds we have and will post them here.
There were some bigger birds, grayish, I couldn't tell what they were. I can't figure out what they are, so I won't post them. If I had to guess, I would say they are some species of Sparrow.
Female Cardinal. These are my favorite. The coloring on them is just brilliant. The Orange of the beak is extraordinary.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v460/Whidden/Whidden%202/femalecard.jpg
Male Carninal. Bright red, very pleasing bird to look at.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v460/Whidden/Whidden%202/cardinalmale.jpg
Downy Woodpecker . I got a few of these guys, they are awesome. Mine have a bigger section of red on their head than this one, more poofy.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v460/Whidden/Whidden%202/Downy20Woodpecker4.jpg
Bluejay . They are loud and obnoxious, but still fun birds to see.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v460/Whidden/Whidden%202/Blue20Jay.jpg
Eastern Bluebird . My second favorite bird. Absolutley stunning colors. We have quite a few of these.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v460/Whidden/Whidden%202/easternbluebird.jpg
Tufted Titmouse . These guys don't have the best coloring, but still neato birds. the second most common in the yard.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v460/Whidden/Whidden%202/tuftedtitmouse.jpg
Blackcap Chickadee . I love the black cap. This is our most common bird here. the biggest eater of the feed we put out.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v460/Whidden/Whidden%202/re-black-capped-chickadee.jpg
Starling. This is that black bird that migrates and fills the yard with 100's at one time. I didn't see any today. They infest the yard and make a lot of noise. A lot of fun.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v460/Whidden/Whidden%202/starling.jpg
Mourning Dove . I saw some in the tree tops today, brownish doves. I don't know what they eat, I have never seen any on the bird feeder.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v460/Whidden/Whidden%202/Mourningdove01.jpg
I got some Kildeer . They aint much to look at. They dive bomb you in the yard and make noise.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v460/Whidden/Whidden%202/kildeer.jpg
Anyhow, the first snow, when it's white out, and the bird are attacking the bird feeders, I will get some pics of my own. But they will be long shots, wont' be as good as the internet pics. I don't have a telephoto lens. I wish I did.
It's so awesome to sit outside on the porch and drink coffee and watch these birds.
***Whidden embraces his old age with dignity***
aight, I'm gonna add them as I see them to this post, instead of later on in the thread. I been seeing newer birds the more I look.
Saw a red headed wood pecker today, that was awesome.

| Posted by: Whidden | | well, for some reason when it snows, them bird "panic" and think they will never get food again.
Every bird within miles will come around and hit the bird feeders.
We had feeders set up when we lived in the trailer park, and every snow, they got full of every kind of bird.
Plus, as an extra bonus, you can see them so much better against the white of the snow.
I have birds nesting in the older birdhouse that my mother in law made. Two of them live in there.
I don't think any are living in the other two I have put up recently. They all go and rest on them, and feed off them, I put a bunch of birdseed on both of them.
I don't think any are living in them yet.
Probably the spring, they will move in. | | Reply To this Message

Well, put out some birdseed, and they will show up I bet. And water.
They get dehydrated in the winter, and real hungry. I don't know if they see the feed, or smell it. But they find it somehow.
Now I don't know about English birds, they may migrate away. But I bet there are some that stay all year round, and if you had a well stocked bird feeder and some water, they would be around when it snowed.

I too, always wanted land. I lived in a trailer park for 13 years.
It sucked. I made it my goal to have a few acres and live like a human being. Shoot, I was 36 before I made it happen, but it is sweet victory.
Especially after that trailer park.

Which is sad, because I saw a full red headed wood pecker. He was awesome.
I never seen one before. I have the standard downy wood pecker, with the red tuft on the back of the head, but his guy had the full red head.
The only pic that turned out was of a cardinal.

I hear them out there pecking wood, but it's high up in the tallest trees.
I do not think they will mess with the birdhouses. And I don't know if they eat the bird seed or not, I don't think they do.
I was in the store this weekend and saw a deal you can get just for woodpeckers, but it was a log made of peanuts and beef brine.

I know they peck holes in trees to live in, but my question was more in regards to treated pine boards and other such building-type material wood.
We might be a lil' slower in Australia, but we're not THAT much slower.

| Posted by: Whidden | | I bought this yesterday at Home Depot.
I cut some birdhouse stuff tonight. I am making a hepagon, which is a 7 sided polygon, that will go around the tree.
It looks like a Cylon Battlestar to tell the truth.
Anyhow, I am addicted to this birdhouse building, it's just a lot of fun. And as I have 53 large oaks, I can build a lot of them and never ever run out of room.
I won't be done with the birdhouse for a couple of weeks I guess, a lot of stuff to do still.
But my old arm is feeling better, not having to cut all the wood by handsaw.
This band saw cuts awesome!

| Posted by: Whidden | | I finished the 7 sided one today and put it on the tree.
I was very happy with it before the tree, but after putting it up, the boards I used to prop it up there kind of take away from it.
I will get used to it I guess.
I had fun making it though, I like the color it came out when I put the stain on it.
I also put a perching rail around the front of each house, so the birds could perch on it if they want.

I put a 1.25 hole in it, and if they need it bigger, they just use their beak to whittle the hole bigger.
So, in theory, any bird could live in them. Though the robins and cardinals are big birds, so they might not be able to.
The rest of em, sure they could move in.
So far, I only have song sparrows living in that one birdhouse my mother in law made.
I have been told the birds will move into mine, in the spring time, when they have their eggs. So I am curious as to what kind of birds move in.

The neighbor who sold us this property uses that land back there for storage and junk.
