In an interview on July 9, 2005. J.K told an interviewer who each character resembles in her childhood.

1.) Hermione -- "I used to sit next to this brilliant girl in my math class, who had raised her hand to answer all of those silly, nonsensical questions that teachers usually ask. The teachers loved her because she was so smart. Her name was Helena and I always thought her name was very strange. She was perfect for the female friend of Harry. Helena was too sexy for this brilliant creature, so I derived her name from "Heroine'' which means a woman who is noted for courage and daring action. Hermione was a pun of Heroine."

2.) Ron -- "Ron was fun to create. He was created for my brother, who absolutely hated my boyfriends and even tattled on me to his friends. He was a great brother who was funny at times but very immature."

3.) Snape -- "He reminded me of my horrible chemistry teacher."
