Interview with Miguel Diaz, a Mexican fruit picker. This was translated into English later on.
http://www.wbschool.net/teachers/images/hispanic-sm.jpg

Q: How old were you when you first emigrated from Mexico to the United States?
A: I was nineteen when I came to San Diego. My mother was poor and sent me to work in a plantation because there was no work in my community.

Q: How did you come here? Did you come alone?
A: I came with my brothers and cousins. We all needed money. I simply hitched a ride with this rich American who offered my brothers and I jobs on his plantation. He said the pay would be good if we worked hard.

Q: Describe your work experience in this plantation.
A: We started work at four o'clock in the morning at least until six thirty at night. We were forced to pick at 32,000,000 strawberries a day and if we didn't keep up with the pace, our pay was reduced. We were afraid of losing our jobs so we worked as fast as we could. We could not be sick or leave work or even run away, because we were brainwashed and afraid of the outside world. Three other Guatemalans reportedly had their money stolen, many were killed -

Q: When did you leave the plantation? How did you escape?
A: I left when I was twenty-five. That was about five years later. I just decided to quit and try to go to a community college.

Q: You weren't penalized were you?
A: I got no paycheck for two weeks. (laughs) That was the least of my worries at the time.

Q: Where are you working now and are you a citizen?
A: I'm working as a waiter at a Mexican restaurant. Hopefully, I will get moved up to being manager one of these days. On citizenship, I recieved my citizenship and am now a full time citizen, who pays taxes and everything. I had to take English classes and Government courses for six months in order to get my green card, but I have learned a lot and hopefully my children and their children will have a brighter future than I did.

What do they consider Hispanic? The definition has changed over time.

A Hispanic is anyone who speaks Spanish or lives in a Spanish speaking country. Many Hispanics have complained that they feel that they do not fit the English ethnic grouping. Some Hispanics claim they are part native Indian and part Mexican. They feel they don't belong.

An Hispanic is any human being from the island of Hispanica.

Where that island is located, no one knows...but it was certain fodder for Madonna's song, "La Isla Bonita."

This way people can speak for and make all kinda generalizations about them which hold no water whatsoever.

Excellent point Schmiggens.

My pastor and his wife, his uncle and his wife....all born and raised in the midwest USA speak fluent Spanish as missionaries to S. America.

Their sons married S. American women too, and speak fluent Spanish. Together they have Spanish speaking children.

So are all these folks, fluent Spanish speakers, some married to S. American women "Hispanic?" At times, while speaking fluent Spanish, they indeed lived in S. America, where people speak Spanish. And these gringos according to that definition, would be "Hispanic?"

To take this to another level.

Spaniards...people from Spain....where the word "Spanish" derived from....

I would never I repeat never advise anyone to tell someone from Spain who speaka da Spanish too..."You are a Hispanic." A Spaniard would not look at this as truth nor as a compliment.

Again...."Hispanics" are people from the island of Hispanica where no one has a clue where this island is located....except for Madonna....she tells the secret in a riddle in her song "La Isla Bonita."

Beyond this....this discussion is lame.

TRUE! My dad would get furious when the forms for school came home and they wanted you to check a box. "We are Spanish, not hispanic!" then it would be followed by a made up labels by the government tirade.

Fuscia,

I am not of Spanish or Latin origin (as far as I know because I was adopted)....

but I would have to agree with your father....someone made those labels up....and even as a gringa, it pisses me the hell off.

I think this whole hispanic label nonsense comes more out of political correctness.

For instance, every job I've had, I befriend the Spanish speakers, be they landscapers, janitors, cooks, whatever. Maybe it's because yo hablo espanol.

Well at one of the jobs, I hadn't seen Miguel the janitor in a while. I was walking out with some coworkers after the day was over and I mentioned to them that I hadn't seen Miguel in a while and was wondering where he was. They didn't know who I was talking about and I said, "The Mexican janitor, Miguel."
Well, some suit was walking near us and he said irately, "Hispanic, the Hispanic janitor." And I replied with contempt, "No, I know Miguel he IS from Mexico, not the island of Hispanica." As if being from Mexico is a bad thing??????????????

This label "Hispanic" is nonsense and poppycock all rolled into one big doobie!

This information is the lamest thing i've ever seen. I am "Hispanic" (<---- lamest word ever invented).
The computer statistic is completely ridiculous. I know plenty of white people who don't own computers and many hispanics who do. Less likely WHY exactly?
30% of illegal immigrants are mexican, maybe in California and Texas.
Hispanics are usually late? I'm curious how the genius who made this study got this RIDICULOUS conclusion.
Not every hispanic has an accent, and for that matter what about other immigrants who DO have accents? Do THEY tend to be reserved? Hmm, funny i don't see them in this study...
I know a CRAP load of hispanics, MOST of whom do NOT work in privately owned Mexican restaurants.

So my question is, when did HISPANICS = MEXICANS? I am hispanic but not mexican. Yes, it IS possible. i hate when people say "oh you speak spanish, you must be mexican" I feel sorry for those people b/c they must live with such ignorance. I have nothing AGAINST mexico, i just have a different background and would like that recognized.

I have never felt like I don't belong. Perhaps the reason some hispanics feel out of place is because PEOPLE COMBINE US INTO ONE GROUP. GUESS WHAT, there's more than one spanish speaking country. and MEXICO does not include Central America, South America and some Carribean Islands, that's absurd and ridiculous. You call an Argentinean Mexican and I'd love to see what happens. Other spanish speaking countries have their own identities. Just b/c white people speak english, we don't assume you're all british.

Whoever makes these ridiculous lists should check themselves before spitting out retardedness.

This study was done in 1999, which is six years too late. Mostly my purpose of this thread was to talk about Hispanics and if we should deport all of them.
My friend was telling me about this Hispanic bum, who lived next-door to her. He did not work, six other people lived in this house with him and he hid whenever they all had to go to work.
My friend then said, "I'm sick of these damn Mexicans taking advantage of the American system." This was to prove that Hispanics do mostly work, but are poor once they reach this country. They are the working poor of America (Not all of course ) but most illegals are.

Here are examples of Hispanics who are taking advantage of the American system:

The head of the House Immigration Reform Caucus says the United States must get serious about legitimate border control measures or face increased risks to its own security.

Rep. Tom Tancredo, R-Colo., who completed a three-day fact-finding mission along a busy stretch of Arizona border on Tuesday, gave WorldNetDaily a wide-ranging interview of what he found. As he did after three previous trips, Tancredo claimed that some areas of the border are so overrun with illegal immigrant traffic that only U.S. troops augmenting Border Patrol and INS officials could possibly hope to stem the flow and give the nation better security in these uncertain times of terrorist threats.

Also, Tancredo said he was increasingly alarmed over reports that border control personnel are more frequently being shot at, chased and targeted by "rogue elements" of the Mexican military, who are either loyal to Mexican-based drug lords or operating outside the scope of their military mandate.

"I wanted to see for myself where the most recent incursions had happened," Tancredo said of his trips. "When you talk to INS, they aren't always clear" about what's going on down on the borders.

Though the Colorado Republican says many more resources must be allocated in defense of the border, he added that he wasn't confident it would happen because certain "political elements and restraints" are in competition with sound border control policy.

"We're no safer today than we were on Sept. 12," he said. Asked why, he answered, "Because there is no political will to do anything about it."

"The president of the United States is afraid of the political ramifications of imposing a true secure border around this nation," he said.

More so, even, than the risks of leaving the borders unprotected?

"Evidently," Tancredo replied. "How else can you possibly explain this? How else can members of Congress let this happen?"

Most lawmakers, he opined, believe lax border policies "translate into votes," which makes them reluctant to crack down – a phenomenon he called "despicable, irresponsible, irrational, and a death wish for the nation."

Opposition to more control

While most pro-immigration groups see a need to change policy to reflect the current reality of the ongoing – and, some say, growing – terrorist threat, they also are opposed to putting troops on borders, asking local police forces to step up enforcement of national immigration laws, and electronic tracking measures for immigrants and foreign visitors.

"The United States is facing a new challenge, the scourge of international terrorism, and clearly the federal government has an obligation to rise to this challenge," said Frank Sharry, executive director of the National Immigration Forum. "However, at the same time we take urgent measures to protect our nation, we also must endeavor to protect our values, traditions, and freedoms."

With respect to immigration, the specific challenge is to find the means to keep out potential terrorists who want to destroy this country at the same time we admit newcomers who want to help build America," Sharry said.

Also, civil rights groups like the American Civil Liberties Union, are fighting new Justice Department and INS rules.

Whether holding "rights training" for jailed detainees or seeking court injunctions against the Justice Department's policy of holding post-Sept. 11 terror-related deportation hearings in secret, the ACLU and other groups have been actively opposing new restrictions.

The AFL-CIO supports legalization of undocumented immigrants, and some groups – like the National Network for Immigrant and Refugee Rights, seek to "defend and expand the rights of all immigrants, regardless of legal status."

"We recognize that increasingly harsh immigration reforms have made it more difficult to legalize status, leaving many people vulnerable to exploitation, discrimination, and family separation," the NNIRR said in a recent position paper. "Numerous studies, including those by the U.S. General Accounting Office, have shown that these sanctions lead to discrimination against people of color."

Border incursions continue

Nevertheless, some Border Patrol agents, border control advocates, and lawmakers say doing little or nothing to guard America's borders not only will cost the nation in terms of national security, but also could begin costing American lives.

Along this line, says Tancredo, one of the most serious and immediate problems he encountered was border incursions committed by rogue Mexican military and police elements, drug lords, and armed immigrant traffickers.

The lawmaker's latest fact-finding mission took him to the Tohono O'Odham Indian Nation, where officials of the 71-member tribal police department claim many of the most recent border incursions have taken place – the last recorded incident occurring in May.

Tancredo said he believes that "because the level of drugs has gone up, we're also seeing a rise in Mexican government incursions."

"We've got [rogue] elements of the Mexican military on the take who are acting as protectors and decoys for major [drug] shipments," he said.

Mexican soldiers have been accused of shooting at, pursuing U.S. citizens, patrols

Tribal police, whose Indian nation shares a 76-mile border with Mexico, report that since immigration interdiction rates on the eastern and western side of their nation have dramatically improved, drug runners and illegal immigrant smugglers "have been funneling through" that narrow section of border.

Tohono O'Odham police officials also say at least 1,500 illegals a day are passing through their nation – many with drugs. And they said their officers, like Border Patrol agents, also are being "chased" by Mexican soldiers and police.

"Their way of life is essentially being destroyed," Tancredo said of the tribe. "You cannot believe the amount of trash the illegal immigrants leave behind. It looks like a national dump – water bottles, clothes, anything and everything" is strewn about.
"It's a tragedy for these people but I think they're a microcosm for what is happening to the rest of America," he said. "From the beginning of this year to the end of July, tribal officials have towed 3,239 vehicles from the reservation."

Tribal police officials say that from Oct. 1, 2001 through the end of last month, nearly 56,000 illegals were apprehended.

"Those are just the apprehensions," Tancredo said.

He said tribal police must hand over all illegal immigrants to federal authorities, and he said that despite the sovereignty of the Indian nation, federal Border Patrol and INS agents still are required to patrol the U.S. border there.

'OTMs' on the rise

Besides drugs, the Colorado congressman noted an increase in OTM's – "other than Mexicans" – being spotted by border control personnel.

The number of Middle Eastern and Chinese men crossing the border is rising, he said. And while nationality alone does not signify a distinct terrorist threat, U.S. intelligence officials, the Justice Department and the INS have singled out Mideastern men for increased scrutiny since the Sept. 11 attacks, according to separate reports.

Also, there are fears in some quarters that China may be trying to infiltrate the U.S. using its own porous borders, mostly for reasons of espionage.

Tancredo said lax border controls would "absolutely and undeniably" worsen the danger the nation faces from potential terrorists.

"The Tohono O'Odham police say there are people coming through their nation that are Middle Eastern," he said. "Also, they see a lot of Chinese coming through as well."

Tancredo said that, in fact, Chinese illegals "are the most significant number of OTMs" getting through.

Troops needed

Because of the reluctance or refusal of local police departments to enforce immigration law, and because of climbing attrition rates among Border Patrol and INS personnel, many border control supporters advocate the use of U.S. troops to augment existing federal border forces.

Tancredo issued a call June 18 to President Bush asking him to use his authority as commander-in-chief to post American troops along the United States' lengthy borders with Mexico and Canada as an anti-terrorism measure. Though both nations are considered allies, Tancredo and others say the nation is at war against terrorism and cannot afford the risk.

To force the issue, the Colorado congressman initiated a petition drive he says garnered so much response he was asked by House officials to remove it from his website.

"Before we ever put it up, we asked them if it would be okay," Tancredo said. "But later they came back and said, 'We've looked at it a little further and it skirts the [ethical] line,' so we've had to put it on our campaign website."

In a June 21 press release, Tancredo said the petition overwhelmed the White House e-mail servers. He said since the inception of the petition he has received more than 25,000 electronic "signatures" so far, but the White House "has simply refused to accept them."

"Now we've got to figure out a way to print them out and deliver them," he said.

In terms of numbers, Tancredo said he's been advised that "at least 20,000 troops" would be needed to secure both the northern and southern borders.

"We're talking about a combination of electronic, human, and very low-tech prevention measures," he said, including cameras and motion sensors to help available manpower interdict illegal immigrant traffic.

But the administration says it wants no part of putting troops on the border. Tancredo said a recent conversation he had with White House Homeland Security Director Tom Ridge summed up the administration's position.

"He said, 'We'll never do that because there are cultural and political reasons why we can't,'" Tancredo said.

And yet, the congressman pointed out, "we have 40,000 troops between Korea and Kosovo, on their borders, but not one here."

'Hemorrhaging green'

Tancredo insisted that something must be done, however, to put more manpower on the border because of increasing attrition rates being experienced by the Border Patrol and INS field personnel. However, the Colorado Republican says he understands why so many want to leave.

"They're so frustrated," he told WorldNetDaily. "How would you like to go and risk your [life] everyday and know that all that's happening to the people you arrest is that they're being let go?"

He says INS personnel also are frustrated because they're being asked not to interdict even terrorist suspects, as WorldNetDaily reported Thursday.

"When they know they're having [illegal immigrants] coming at them from every side, and when they know their own government doesn't support what they're doing, I'd be frustrated too," said Tancredo. "This has all kinds of ramifications."

Asked if conditions on the border were getting worse, Tancredo said it appeared so.
"I go to the spots where it's the worst, so naturally what I see is overwhelming," he said.

border fence

He compared Border Patrol and INS policies to placing a "a few bricks" in front of millions of gallons of rushing water.

Border Patrol and INS officials who spoke on condition of anonymity say security on the border – especially the southwest border – is, in many ways, worse than before Sept. 11. Others say that contrary to INS claims, all U.S. ports of entry are not open 24 hours a day, seven days per week.

"For one thing, we have fewer agents now than we did before 9-11," one senior Border Patrol agent said. Worse, "the agents that we have are lacking in experience, and won't be able to gain knowledge from the seasoned agents because they are not sticking around."

On Tuesday an INS official said the agency was on "Threat Level One status," which is the highest alert condition.

"Within hours of the attack, all ports of entry were placed on 'Threat Level One' status and continue in that status today, despite the strain on our personnel," said INS spokesman Dan Stein. "INS inspectors were reassigned and work tirelessly so that all ports of entry can be manned 24 hours a day, seven days a week."

The senior border agent scoffed at that, noting that the nation's sole border law enforcement agency is losing too many officers.

"We're hemorrhaging green," he said, a reference to the color of Border Patrol uniforms.

"[Agents] are treated with little to no respect by the politicians, [and] we are treated with even less respect by the average citizen," the agent said. "Our authority and ability to do our job is hindered by management that is afraid to get the 'wrong' people mad."

"The passion for the job is stifled by the restraints placed upon us by politicians both in D.C., as well as those in the Patrol," said another.

Border Patrol targets?

Border Patrol agents and INS field inspectors also complain about working conditions that are harsh already and are getting worse – and more dangerous.

Officials also deal with increased drug trafficking, such as this cocaine shipment

"We are some of the lowest paid federal law enforcement officers in the [country], and we feel as if we have been abandoned by the country we wish to serve and protect," one Border Patrolman said.

And, as WorldNetDaily has previously reported, other sources now have confirmed that Border Patrol agents have $200,000 price tags on their heads in the form of bounties offered by Mexico-based drug lords.

As also previously reported, agents complain that they are increasingly fired upon by Mexican police or troops that often cross into the United States – by accident, according to Mexican officials. Those incursions are bad enough, agents and inspectors say, but they are made worse because the U.S. government excuses them by providing Mexican officials with political cover.

Tancredo says he's heard of similar incidents but so far "there is nothing we can pin it on" in terms of hard, documented evidence.

"We are not even given the option of taking out M-4s (a shorter version of the M-16 assault rifle) so that we can be adequately armed to repel these incursions and attacks on our national security, and our lives," one Border Patrol agent said.

Not only does the Mexican government condone illegal immigration into the US, it encourages it. I frequently watch Mexican TV, and I have seen commercials where the Mexican government tells the viewers where to get pamphlets that go into great detail about the best way to ILLEGALLY cross into the US and obtain work. The pamphlets are published and distributed by the Mexican government

Let's talk about all those people who take advantage of the welfare system. Those aren't all of mexican decent. I don't wanna pay for some skank's 8 babies when she's sitting her butt at home eating ho-hos with her kids dirty, barefoot and in diapers because she's too lazy to get a job.

I know plenty of those people.

On a serious side, I am very discouraged with immigration and those who take advantage of welfare. My next-door neighbor is part Mexican and part Guatemalan. She works two jobs, she might add a third to her list this winter and she is still struggling to support her children. She is the sweetest person on earth! She gives me these red tomatos and baby sits my daughter when I go out.

I wouldn't say she's taking advantage of the system. I myself have a distant grandfather. Probably a great-great-great-great-great grandfather, who was Argentinan, but rather than that I am not Hispanic.

Maybe we're related I mean... cousins as well as bro and sis

I also have the scottish/irish thing too, but a lot of people do

My Belgim connection is through the Leopold family. An odd Leopold left Belgium in the mid 1800's. Came to America and decided to go on a great American goat drive across the country. When that got boring, he came back to Missouri, helped out in the underground railroad by sheltering runaway slaves. The really sad thing is that two of his sons joined the KKK.

Here is an Arizona representative Russell Pearce Arizona Representative

The hard truth on illegal immigration
ARIZONA –– Arizona’s 370–mile long border with Mexico places us on the frontline in this battle against illegal immigration. And for those who think the war analogy is too strong, remember the violent deaths that occur due to human and drug smuggling.
So, it is up to us. One of the ways we are doing that is passing good reforms such as Proposition 200 (which I co-authored) and through the Legislature considering further reforms which prohibits bail for those illegal aliens who commit violent crimes in Arizona; require law enforcement to cooperate with Federal government with illegal alien apprehension and deportation; restrict public benefits such as child care subsidies, housing assistance and in-state college tuition for illegal immigrants.
Until the day I die, I will insist that 'illegal' is 'illegal'.”
The absolute basis for the existence of our government is the protection of our Citizens-their person, their property and their rights. I want to thank not only the Minutemen but also the people of Arizona and the rest of the country who supported us and urged us on. Defending freedom and standing up to people who discount the laws of this great country is not a sacrifice but rather our duty.
Perhaps as high as 80% of the violent crime in Phoenix area involves illegal aliens (according to Chief Hurt and Mesa police violent crimes response team)

Illegal Aliens cost taxpayers $68 Billion annually in federal programs in 2002. Studies estimate that amnesty would increase that three fold.

$311 Billion in uncollected taxes (Barron's study).
$200 Billion annually in lost American wages. Native-born American men lost an average of $1700 in wages in 2000 due to US immigration policy (Harvard University).

Maricopa County Hospital loses over $2 million weekly on uncompensated care (largely do to illegal aliens) (2003, 77 border hospitals filed for bankruptcy).

Feds owe $25 million in uncompensated SCAAP costs just in Maricopa County, (1/3 of our federal prisons are illegal aliens).

Arizona spends over $800 million (K –12) annually to educate illegals.

Over half of AHCCCS births are from illegal mothers 1/3 of children in Arizona have immigrant parents.

"The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican form of Government, and shall protect each of them against invasion." Article IV Section 4 of the U.S. Constitution.

Today, the majority of these elected officials are in violation of their oath of office, with severe consequences to their law abiding U.S. citizen constituents’.

From State Representative Russell Pearce R-18, Mesa, Arizona, Chairman of the House Appropriations Committee and Co-Author of Proposition 200 (known as Protect Arizona NOW).

I am so grateful to Americans who stand up for the Rule of Law and the citizens of this great nation. The disrespect for America (United States) our laws, our taxpayers, our sovereignty, our Constitution should be alarming to every American. I am also amazed at the Governor and our Attorney General's (who took an Oath to uphold the Constitution and the Laws) attempt to ignore and in fact their attempt to thwart the people's will and the law and what Prop. 200 is about (preventing illegals from getting free stuff against the law) in its attempt to Re-establish the Rule of Law.

However that is the continue deceit that comes from open border advocates and their kind.
I have spent 30 years in the criminal justice system and now sit as a State Legislator (Chairman of the House Appropriations Committee) and I have been vigilant in protecting the citizens of the United States (specifically Arizona) and will continue to support the Rule of Law and demand others do also. I continue to be amazed at those who pander to foreign nations interest, cheap labor advocates, the liberal left who benefit politically as we watch America being destroyed. I intend to continue to bring forth legislation that will detour illegal aliens and go after criminal aliens by allow local law enforcement to play a role in this illegal alien crime wave. We no longer can afford for our law enforcement community to sit on the side lines while our neighborhoods are destroyed and our nation is attacked by these criminal/violent aliens.

While I was in Washington D.C. recently speaking at the Brookings Institute on immigration. While on stage, I was given a message, "Urgent, call home, Emergency". As I stepped off the stage found a phone and called home I found my son, Sean

These laws are specific. They demand arrest and deportation for anyone within the United States of America without lawful entry. For anyone hiring an illegal alien, these laws provide fines of $10,000.00 per illegal hired and up to five years in prison. (I intend to introduce for the 3rd time a bill/House Referendum to go after employers who "knowingly" hire illegal aliens and empower citizens and local law enforcement in this effort).

Nonetheless, according to Time Magazine, September 12, 2004, written by Pulitzer Prize winning journalists Donald L. Barlett and James B. Steele--over 4,000 illegal aliens breach Arizona’s borders nightly. That is, "Enough to fill 22,000 Boeing 737 airliners or 60 flights every day of the year." Millions of these illegal aliens find employment with our top corporations in every sector of our society’ all the detriment of America’s working class’ and in violation of the rule of law. Yet Tom Ridge of Homeland Security, Asa Hutchinson head of the Border Patrol, our Co

Today, the majority of these elected officials are in violation of their oath of office. Beyond this violation, with severe consequences for their law abiding U.S. citizen constituents’ is the poor example they set--absence of honor and legality. According to Webster’s dictionary, fifteen million illegal aliens constitute an invasion.

Baldacci of Maine is the first governor to sign an order giving illegal aliens a sanctuary state. The cornucopia of benefits include the ability to work illegally, ability to drive without license or car insurance, use of welfare, use our schools with free lunches for their kids and state funded medical care” at our expense. This is the type of corrupt leadership found in the Third World. Baldacci violates his oath of office. However, he is not alone. Not one single governor in the United States stands against illegal immigration or attempts to enforce Federal or local laws in our states. They, in fact, aid, abet and assist illegal aliens. What law do they break?

"A person (including a group of persons, business, organization, or local government) commits a federal felony when she or he: assists an illegal alien she/he should reasonably know is illegally in the U.S. or who lacks employment authorization, by transporting, sheltering, or assisting him or her to obtain employment, or encourages that illegal alien to remain in the U.S. by referring him or her to an employer or by acting as employer or agent for an employer in any way, or knowingly assists illegal aliens due to personal convictions." Federal Law ” Section 8 USC 1324. If you suffered a horde of people overrunning your home or community, you would call the cops and have them arrested. Not so with illegal aliens! By lack of law enforcement, illegals recognize the open invitation to illegal entry. The benefits of lawbreaking exceed their wildest dreams.

Below is just the first part of a prior op ed on Prop. 200, a simple solution to re-establishing the Rule of Law.
Protect Arizona NOW/Prop. 200 "Arizona Taxpayers and, Citizens Protection Act" does three things.

Proof of citizenship to register to vote. The U.S. Constitution established more than 200 years ago that only citizens can vote. The initiative requires everyone equally to prove that eligibility. The Help America Vote Act of 2002 requires states to strengthen the integrity of their voter rolls, as does Title 7, Section 12 of the Arizona Constitution, which states: "There shall be enacted registration and other laws to secure the purity of elections and guard against abuses of the elective franchise."

Photo I.D. when voting. Photo I.D. is required to cash a check, apply for welfare, sign a lease, get a rental card at a video store. Gov. Napolitano vetoed the photo I.D. bill, stating it was illegal. Yet 11 states already have laws requiring I.D. when voting. Some laws have been on the books for decades, so where does she get it's illegal? Or does she think voting isn't as precious a right in this country as having a video rental card?

Proof of eligibility to receive non-federal mandated public benefits. This is already on the books. The initiative would require everyone to provide proof of eligibility equally. The Urban Institute studied this extensively in 1994, the University of Arizona in 2001, and estimated such costs to vary widely in the tens of millions of dollars.
While the overall responsibility of Immigration belongs to the Federal Government, the impact of the Federal Government's failure falls on the citizens of Arizona and it is up to us to do something about illegal activity and the issues of voter fraud and theft of taxpayer dollars.

They say this initiative is divisive? Like its name says, it seeks to protect Arizona taxpayers and citizens. The only divisiveness our initiative could cause might be between those for whom laws matter and those for whom laws don't matter.

Those laws are already on the books--our initiative would only require that laws regarding the eligibility or recipients of public benefits that are already on the books, are enforced. People registering to vote would be required to "prove they are U.S. citizens" when they register to vote. When they go vote, they only have to provide a photo or other acceptable I.D. (spelled out in the initiative). (blockbuster requires two forms of ID to rent a movie, it seems like voting should be almost as important!)

"Illegal immigration, moreover, is not an exceptional case, but a powerful proof that the usually accepted 'model' of how our government works has been supplanted by something else entirely," Youngblood said. " Most Americans, as supported by both the anecdotal evidence of popular opinion outlets such as talk radio, the Internet, etc., and by legitimate, scientific polling data, overwhelmingly support stopping illegal migration. Yet,

Of course this ignores the Crime (violent and property loss), Cost of Education, cost of Health Care, Americans losing jobs, Destruction of our Neighborhoods, unpaid taxes, unfair and immoral competitive advantage of business over honest business, etc.

For example at our 2004 Republican State Convention over 75% of our elected PC's voted for a Resolution to endorse Prop. 200 and yet out of our Congressional Delegation came out against putting into place a verification process to protect the integrity of our Elections and the Protection of fraud at our welfare offices, (exception of Trent Franks). On a statewide poll conducted by ASU/Channel 8 85% of Republicans supported Prop. 200.

**If you listen to the liberals and pro illegal alien crowd you would think that carrying an ID is somehow hazardous to your health**

The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is that good people do nothing.
NO COMPROMISE IN DEFENSE OF OUR NEIGHBORHOOD, OUR CITY, OUR STATE, AND OUR COUNTRY.
Calling an illegal alien an undocumented immigrant is like calling a burglar an uninvited house guest.

A legislative effort to allow local police to enforce immigration law allows and not allow some of the state’s most violent criminals to remain on our streets, State Rep. Russell Pearce says. Pearce wants to "Take the handcuffs off the police and put them on the bad guys" and says local law enforcement can no longer sit on the side line and watch our neighborhoods be destroyed by gangs, violence and allow those in this country illegally to hide behind sanctuary policies.

Pearce is sponsoring several bills to protect Arizonans from illegal aliens and awaits final action on them in the Senate and consideration by Gov. Janet Napolitano.

One bill, SB1306, would allow local law enforcement such as county sheriffs and municipal police officers to enforce federal immigration laws such as detaining illegal aliens and turning them over to federal authorities.

Another bill, HB2389/HCR2028, asks voters to remove the ability for an illegal alien who is accused of committing a serious felony to get out of jail before trial.

These two common sense measures have received widespread support despite attempts by Democrats and others to paint illegal immigration as a racial issue.

“Illegal aliens have already shown a willingness to break the law,” Pearce said. “When police on Arizona’s streets come in contact with them, they need to serve and protect by asking one simple question: Are you in this country legally?”

Phoenix and other Arizona cities refuse to allow their police officers the opportunity to do their job by catching criminals who break our laws, Pearce said. In turn, police organizations have abdicated their authority by refusing to back important legislation to crack down on illegal aliens, Pearce said.

In Southern California, several prominent street gangs such as the 18th Street Gang count a large percentage of illegal immigrants among their ranks. In Los Angeles County, an estimated 95 percent of outstanding homicide warrants are for illegal immigrants.

A new Arizona law giving cities and counties the ability to instruct their law enforcement agencies to detain illegal aliens and turn them over to federal authorities will translate into an immediate reduction in crime.

Other southwestern jurisdictions are coming to the same conclusions, Pearce noted.
“In Los Angeles County and neighboring Orange County, law enforcement officials have decided illegal immigration can’t be ignored,” Pearce said. “Illegals account for such a large number of violent felonies that agencies in those two counties now want to ask the one basic question of residency status.”

If SB1306 takes the handcuffs off law enforcement, Pearce said his HCR2028 ensures those illegal aliens apprehended after allegedly committing serious felonies stay behind bars until their trial.

“An illegal facing a lifetime as a guest in an Arizona prison has no incentive to await trial,” Pearce said. “Going back to Mexico for a time only to resurface somewhere else in the United States makes a mockery of our judicial system.”

Cuz it's anti- XXXXXXXXX (fill it in.)

It's not politically correct to uphold immigration laws that are even in place.

Tom Tancredo is practically the only one in Congress trying....and he's pissing off alot of people for trying to get legislation passed that will cause the enforcement of previous legislation to enforce immigration laws.

At my last job I befriended a girl working as an illegal as a janitor. They treated her like dirt. And she begged me for money at every turn. I gave her all the food tokens I had (rewards they gave me for good work), so that she could eat a lunch.

As a full fledged citizen they would be protected by labor laws....what more can I say? And they would have more of a say in their lives, their jobs, their "benefits" like health insurance. Because they would be able to vote. It's a misnomer that keeping them illegal is a good thing for them....because then, they cannot ban together and vote those mothers out.

In a nutshell, the rich would be forced to obey the law. Strange isn't it?

Ever read any John Steinbeck?
Good stuff!!!

I haven't ever had to live in a situation where I grew up in a one room shack, no electricity, no sewage system, with ten other brothers and sisters.
Where my playground was where my toilet was, simply because I was born into that situation.

But I have seen such people, children, living in this situation and built onto their one room "shack" with a group called Project Amigos.

And I am not qualified to call anyone who came from such situations "dirt" simply because I happened to be born in the richest nation on the planet.

It's for these kinds of ugly American attitudes that America gets its bad name in foreign countries.
And if I had come from such an impoverished situation, I too would wanted to have it better perhaps, and I would have seen such an attitude as your post and perhaps garnered some resentment toward such a place with such haughty attitudes and wanted to do some destruction to it.

And we wonder where all the animosity toward "the land of the free and the home of the brave," the place where "freedom and democracy reigns" comes from??????????????????????????????????

By the way, you got it backwards, advance.

They are not living off the rich, the rich are living off of them.

I'd like to see some of these rich out there plucking asparagus in the sweltering heat for 12 hours in a day for minimum wage.

And that's why the immigration policy needs to be changed.
Because the illegal immigrants are being taken advantage of and the rich are breaking the laws.
You think they don't know who they are hiring. HA!

But that's another discussion entirely....
because

It is written:

Do not fret because of him who prospers in his way,

Because of the man who carries out wicked schemes.

Cease from anger and forsake wrath;

Do not fret; it leads only to evildoing.

For evildoers will be cut off,

But those who wait for the LORD, they will inherit the land.

Yet a little while and the wicked man will be no more;

And you will look carefully for his place and he will not be there.

But the humble will inherit the land

And will delight themselves in abundant prosperity.

Our failure to secure our borders against illegal immigrants gives Americans a bad name as well as being loud, arrogant and lazy.

Haven't you ever read any Border Watch pamphlets or any thing being published by the Border Patrol recently?

I have received this warning notice that terrorists might try to get into America using those paths that illegal immigrants have used.

Most Hispanics do not support open borders.

I have worked in the peace corps for four years SWTT. I have seen poverty. I have seen skeletons of children and I grow very angry with their governments.

I have asked myself why Mexico doesn't help its own poorer citizens. I have wondered if Mexico has made a turn for the worst. I pity the poor migrant workers who try to honestly escape poverty, but I do not pity them all.

I do not pity drug smugglers who turn our neighborhoods into "ghettos" or battlefields, which most Mexican illegal immigrants turn out to be. I also do not pity those Mexicans who take advantage of our great system of welfare.

I have known four illegal immigrants who do not work and still receive government benefits such as welfare. I think that it is an outrage that our government is betraying us and giving our hard earned dollars to these illegals (I will refrain from using 'Mexican' since not all illegals are Mexicans) I went to the former INS building and was surprised with its benefits for illegals. Their children and their children's children will receive scholarships to colleges and their children will receive free lunches at public schools.

You can support illegal immigration forever and ever, SWTT. You can say that these people are escaping poverty, are escaping injustice in their homelands and are actually good citizens and I would agree with you. SWTT, we must have secure our borders and make sure that the right people are coming into the United States because it is not fair to our children. I do not want to see our great democracy being mocked and spat upon by these morons. I am greatly concerned, rather mortified that our government does nothing to get rid of these people.

Last week, I went to Tucson on a weekend trip. As I was waiting for someone, I was interested in this bus that had at least a million people loaded in it. I watched with dismay and anger when the bus driver let out all those illegal immigrants who later walked to the border.

Time out hazeld.

I am in complete agreement with you about immigration laws.

And so is Tom Tancredo R-CO who you kinda slammed before.

I completely agree the borders should be sealed up. It's insane not to...in a time of war????? Against "terrorists" who could and would take advantage of such a thing??

And because they do not seal up these borders....I've been left to ponder "Why not?"

And the conclusions I have made is that it relates to money...as it all does in this society.
Who would suffer the most if cheap labor was done away with???

Answer that question, and you would get to my previous posts.....

Just trying to think beyond the obvious to find the root cause, that's all.

But to call someone who may have not had the advantages you may have had in your life, "a whore," and in advance's case "dirt," is not looking at this situation from all perspectives and not very compassionate either for one who says they were in the Peace Corps.

And my entire discussion about the rich's stake in keeping their ability to break the laws without repurcussions was really in response to Dekka00. Dekka00, like me, loves Latin people like I do....he says, "mi casa es su casa." And I am saying, if you are not a legal citizen in this country, yes, I love you enough to say that without the legal documentation.....you are in the eyes of the law lesser than me because they can take advantage of you because you do not have citizenship.
Again, blame has been placed upon these people who are impoverished where it really belongs on the ones who are breaking the laws by hiring these people and the legislators who sit back and make the laws and don't see to it that their laws are enforced. And shame shame shame on the executive and judicial branches for looking the other way, or trying to come up with legal loop holes for their rich buddies.

And because illegal immigration is not being dealt with, these people are having to break the law in order to have the same rights as citizens we do. And you are right, we end up paying for it....again, instead of the rich employers paying for healthcare to legal citizens, they dump the burden upon the taxpayers...you and me....and then we blame it on the people coming in illegally because of a lazy incompetent government....instead of looking at the real criminals in the situation.

I have no problem whatsoever with sealing up the borders. There have been reports that Chechen terrorists entered the United States from Mexico. This is a HUGE problem.

However: Mexicans/Central Americans coming here for a better life is not a problem.

If they come here illegally, and get treated like dirt because of it (and I've seen it firsthand, they do) you have to ask yourself:

Why would they rather live here as a fugitive than in their own homeland?

So seal up the borders, hunt 'em down, deport 'em, fine by me.

But to judge them? To call them criminals? Dirt??? Why don't you try walk in their shoes for a while, my friends.

What irks me is how people complain about illegal immigration, but then when action is taken to remedy the situation, people jump all over the President. The millions of illegal immigrants are now legal. Problem solved. They are paying taxes, they are accounted for.

People claim we are "rewarding them for breaking the law."

Utter bullcrap. We are catching up on paperwork. Red tape. That's all. They are contributing positively to our country and its economy. They are not terrorists, they are not criminals: They are simply people who wish for a better life for themselves and their children, the same as our ancestors.

Where does an American who smokes pot and drops acid go to find their fix - are the drug suppliers always Mexican?

If the system can be taken advantage of by PEOPLE, then PEOPLE will take advantage of the system. How does it work in the U.S.A. - does a person have to be an American citizen or, at least, have landed immigrant status before being granted access to that great welfare system of yours?

A lot of what has been said in this thread has made me feel sick to my stomach. The intent was obvious from the get-go, but the thread starter dressed it up rather nicely so it would appear less racist and more political.

From the time I was little, I was taught to take responsibility for my actions and to understand that with my actions, there comes a responce and I should accept that. These illegals don't. They have no problem commiting a crime, then they expect to be treated better than poor Americans living in the worst areas in the country, because people like swtt want them to be treated so special. That makes me sick. You break the law, you get punished. That is one of the many things our country is based around. Equal trial and law for all people.
