Daddy's girl: Lionel Richie was clearly thrilled to be supporting Nicole at the launch of her first literary effort, a novel entitled The Truth About Diamonds
Music legend Lionel Richie looked every inch the doting dad at the launch of daughter Nicole's debut novel The Truth About Diamonds. His eyes sparkling with pride, the music legend had a warm hug for the diminutive 24-year-old, who's currently got a packed agenda with a movie role and an album also in the works.
After rising to fame in reality TV show The Simple Life with former pal Paris Hilton, Nicole decided to turn her hand to writing and took inspiration from her troubled teenage years. The book tells the story of the pampered daughter of a popstar who lands a TV show and finds happiness after a well-publicised drug addiction.
Her father's support was all the sweeter since Nicole didn't see a lot of him growing up. "I would beg Dad not to go to work because work for him meant that he would be gone for months," she recalls. "I grew up in the Eighties and that was at the pinnacle of his career."
These days the two are so close that when her beau 32-year-old Adam Goldstein proposed he did it the old-fashioned way, first asking permission from Lionel. The family celebrated the engagement with a lavish party at Lionel's Italian-style Beverly Hills mansion in July, with guests including Mischa Barton and Lindsay Lohan.
"My dad gave a toast and couldn't even look at me because his eyes started to get teary. At one point he gave Adam a big hug and said, 'I'm glad to have you in the family'. That was really special," she says. "The night was just perfect."
