What is exactly is a Patronus? I have wondered if it was a spell of some type. In The Order Of The Phoenix Herminone said:

"Yes, Harry, but all the same, there's no point pretending that you're not good at Defense Against the Dark Arts because you are. You were the only person last year who could throw off the Imperius Curse completely, you can produce a Patronus

In the recent book, The Half-Blood Prince Snape comments to Tonks:

"And incidentally, I was interested to see your Patronus."

Also near the end the Patronus is also mentioned. Tonks says to Lupin:

"'But I don't care either, I don't care!" said Tonks, seizing the front of Lupin's robes and shaking them. "I've told you a million times....'''
And the meaning of Tonk's Patronus and her mouse-colored hair"

I hope that a Patronus isn't a baby, because what Herminone was saying to Harry was that he could produce a baby that most adults can't if that is what a Patronus is.....

a patronus is a spell that is cast to repel dementors. It is a guardian. It is a projection of positive emotion that stands between the wizard and the dementor. Each wizard will cast a different patronus, but they do not chose what their partronus is. The patronus will be some animal that is true to their character. Somehow, the Order uses the patronus to deliver messages.

Prisioner of Azkaban goes into the patronus spell. Producing a patronus is very advanced magic. Not all wizards can do it.

What she said ^

I'm thinking the patronus "delivering" a message by just being there... I mean, it's like a flare or something... that's the best I can think of. Unless they, like, hold letters their mouths or something

This makes more sense. I had a stroke of amnesia there for a second because I read Prisoner of Azkeban twice.

This makes me want to peruse over the book again.

The patronus is made of the happy thought i think ... i supose Tonks' one changed because possibly that happy thought changed, or the great grevence of Sirius dyng changed it ... or perhaps she starting to fall in love with Lupin, and when that happens, like big bursts of stong emotion, it changes ... I wonder if Harry's wouldn't have been a stag if James and Lily haddn't died?

I think you may be onto something there panda. Her "happy thought" changed, so her pantronus' appearance did too.

Yea, but I have do admit, JKR had me thinking it was a big black dog for awhile there... I guess that's just how she twists things though. I also have to admit, that I never saw it coming for Tonks and Lupin.. I guess I just didn't see enough of them together.

I thought it was a dog as well, she only said it had 4 legs and was large ... not that it looked like anythng, which made us think it was Sirus as a god, and that Tonks was still mourning

but who would think of a werewolf for a patronus? That is really unusual, plus the fact that Tonks appeared to like Bill in the last book. JKR is the master sneak.

Totally had us on that one, didn't she? I never guessed that it was a werewolf... and I never suspected that Tonks was in love with Lupin. I just thought that she was grieving Sirius. And you're right, Sher... it almost seemed like Tonks was seeing Mrs Weasley because she was confronting her feelings about Bill, or something... and that Mrs Weasley wanted to see her son with Tonks instead of Fleur.

Anyway... I love how the patronus can be used as a 'messenger' Each persons is unique... and when it's seen, you know that you are being summoned. There doesn't need to be an actual message... just the 'animal' is all that's needed.... to know that a certain person is in need of you, for some reason.

I would guess that they have a way of locating where the person who sent it is.

I'm assuming that you follow the patronus... or, it just somehow indicates where they are... like a line of light or something. *shrugs*
