| BRUSSELS (AP) — In a blow to their ambitions, European Union leaders decided Thursday to put on hold plans to unite their 25 nations under a single constitution, saying they needed to reconnect with their people. |

Oh, now isn't that so very absolutely gargantuanely stuptifyingly touchy feely
special???
But what are we to expect from this harbinger of the humanist manifesto? Huh?

Well, you know, at least they are allowing the people to vote on this humanist manifesto, wheareas in the United States of Amerika, our constitution is being rewritten in the courts to become the humanist manifesto.
Now isn't that special??? | | Reply To this Message

The EU constitution was 400 pages long. How long is the American constitution? I'll bet most Americans understand a lot of the US constitution too. People were not clear what the constitution entailed, and there have been a lot of changes recently, many of them divisive, lots of new members joining, the Iraq war, global warming, unemployment, Turkey wanting to join, free market economics or protectionism etc. | | Reply To this Message

The US constitution served as a framework for how government should exist and operate in order to solve issues as they arose.
The EU Constitution tries to solve every problem known to man all in one fell swoop.
AND you get to vote on each of these issues.
It's an impossible task because different nation states have varying ideas on how to tackle these issues.
That is why the USA was not setup as a true democracy, it was setup as a Constitutional representative republic.
The people voted in the representatives for their causes and these representatives hashed out solutions.
I mean what is the EU going to do in the future?
Every time a problem arises, are they going to take these matters up for a vote each time?
How will anyone ever lead their own private lives if all you have to do with your time is study issues and figure out the best possible solution?
How does this serve anyone?
And if these issues are solved from the majority viewpoint, you are then faced with what one of our founding fathers warned about: the tyranny of the majority.
They aren't going to please everyone...and that is why I feel they really aren't for the people in the first place, the EU, I mean because...
I remember JY_French mentioning that even if the constitution were to be ratified, it has its own little catch which says the constitution can always be revised without the member states approval.
So why even have a constitution/covenant with the people if the representatives can change it at whim? That isn't a constitution, it's more like a bandaid on a wound that can be replaced either by salve or by poison.
It's too bad the people cannot renig on their decision for the EU in the first place...however the revived Roman empire must come to pass... | | Reply To this Message
