Hit Me Baby One More Time |
| Posted by: fuscia | | Is anyone else watching this show? I saw it last night. They had the Motels, Tommy Tutone, Vanilla Ice, and the Knack. Thursday night Howard Jones , Irene Cara, Cameo, Sophie B. Hawkins and Wang Chung will be on.
The premise is that these old bands sing their big hit, then they compete with a current song. The winner gets $20,000 donated to the charity of their choice. | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: Sierradaddy | | Cameo's actually a group of about 4 guys, I think. They're the guys who sing Word Up, which for me is one of the most recognizable songs of the 80's. | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: fuscia | | Sorry. I knew they did Word Up, but I had no idea if it was a guy or a group. | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: fuscia | | It is interesting to see what they look like and if they sound good. They had Tiffany on the other night. She tried to sing "break away". It was really bad. | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: schmiggens | | But Arrested Development are still around, they had a new song not that long a go, a couple of months or so ago I think. | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: gaboman | | A few months? Are you sure? Their last album was like... 2 years ago-ish. I do know they're still around, but I really don't pay much attention to them anymore. But their first album was just so huge, that the fact they fell into obscurity is funny.
I think the show isn't necessarily only people/bands who no longer perform, a lot of the people who've been on it have had albums recently. Tiffany had one a couple of years ago, so did Vanilla Ice.
Thankfully wang chung haven't. | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: schmiggens | | I remember the new Arrested Development song being released in our Summer so 6 - 8 months ago maximum.
Vanilla Ice had one a few years ago? Really? Isn't he a preist now? No .. that's MC Hammer, isn't it who's a preist? Is he?
What the hell does Wang Chung actually mean? | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: gaboman | | Wang Chung is just a name. Wang is actually Huang in Mandarin, which is basically a common surname like "smith" or whatever... and Chung is Zhong in Mandarin, and is... also just a name... but it also means clock... but they just mean the thing to be a name and not mean anything in particular.
They used to be called Huang Chung, apparently, then changed to Wang Chung. I think because they realized half the name was mandarin, the other half was cantonese (making them look really, really dumb)... can't think of any other reason for it.
I worked all that out by looking at this album cover

PS. Vanilla Ice... dunno, I do remember some rapper becoming a priest (Mase comes to mind, but someone from the early 90's too)... wasn't Hammer, I don't think. Though he didn't make a lot of music lately, I just can't picture it Vanilla Ice's stuff is pretty sexually explicit, so its doubtful he is... | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: HECK! | | Yeah, Hammer became a priest. I think he also tried to play baseball.
Vanilla Ice was the one hung out of a window by Suge Knight.
