| Johnny Depp and Organizers To Arrange Thompson Memorial
Aspen, Colorado (AHN) -Organizers plan a memorial service for late writer/journalist Hunter S. Thompson, who shot himself in his Woody Creek Ranch home in February.
They will erect a 150 foot statue, courtesy of actor Johnny Depp, resembling the writer's popular "gonzo fist" emblem. Depp portrayed Thompson in the film adaptation of his popular novel, "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas."
Event producer Jon Equis says the tower will be 12 feet wide at the base and 8 feet wide at the top, where a cannon will be placed.
The invitation-only event, slated for August 20, will culminate at sunset, with Thompson's ashes being fired from the cannon onto his Woody Creek Ranch property; a personal request of the writer's.
Equis adds the event will feature "live and spoken word entertainment."
Event plans need to be reviewed by the Pitkin County Community Development Department.
Meanwhiile, widow Anita Thompson is supportive of the memorial, heralding it as a celebration.
