Brothers Gibb Say the Bee Gees Are Done

May 27, 10:00 AM (ET)

LONDON (AP) - Barry and Robin Gibb, who went to Buckingham Palace to be honored Thursday, said the Bee Gees died with their brother, Maurice.

During an emotional ceremony, Prince Charles made the brothers Commanders of the Order of the British Empire, or CBE. Maurice's son, Adam, received the award on his father's behalf.

"It's bittersweet. It would have been wonderful for all three of us to be here," Barry Gibb, 57, said afterward. "We have mixed feelings. Knowing Mo, this would have been right up his alley. He would have still had his hat on," a reference to Maurice Gibb's beloved black trilby.

Gibb said the Bee Gees are now a thing of the past. "We are not the Bee Gees now, in respect for Mo," he said. "Maybe the time's just right for a bit of free flight. Maybe at some point we will do something together."

Adam Gibb, a 28-year-old film student, looked close to tears after collecting his father's award.

"My mother was supposed to do it, but she wouldn't have been able to" because of the emotion, he said. Maurice Gibb's widow, Yvonne, watched from the audience.

Born on the Isle of Man, the Gibb brothers moved to Manchester in the 1950s. Their '70s disco hits included "Stayin' Alive" and "Night Fever."

Maurice Gibb died last year at age 53. He suffered a heart attack before undergoing emergency surgery in Miami for an intestinal blockage.

tsk... should've talked about them getting their start in Australia

anyways, I'm not that saddened that the Bee Gees are through, when Maurice died it was pretty evident the end of them was there. Though Robin did release a solo album not long ago, with a couple of good songs.

The one thing I'm glad about is they went out on the strength of a fantastic album. This Is Where I Came In was one of their all time greastest LPs

Don't worry Grant, all the Aussie press about the break up focused mainly on the fact that they started off here. It is almost like the Bees Gees didn't break up, and journo's just wanted to remind us that they started here.

Aussies are funny like that, we don't have many famous people so when an Aussie becomes famous, we harp on and on about the fact that they're Australian. And you don't even have to have been born here, living in Australia for two years allows you to be qualified as "ours" (Mel Gibson, Russel Crowe, Naomi Watts, etc, etc)

that's right

Well, I think the music they made in Australia was great but that's me

The Bee Gees broke up like 20 years ago hehehe they've already reunited since. Though I guess death could be counted as the ultimate break up

Singing brothers hailed - 31may04

A HOUSE that was home to the Bee Gees in the 1960s has been chosen to launch NSW's historic plaques program.

The three-bedroom brick house on Bunnerong Rd, in the beachside suburb of Maroubra, Sydney, was the home of the famous singing brothers from 1963 to 1966.
It is the first of 10 sites the State Government program will recognise in time for Australia Day next year.

Premier Bob Carr said the program would be similar to long-running schemes in Canada and the UK.

"We have some of the world's most colourful characters and it is appropriate we acknowledge our history," he said.

"If this was in North America, there would be a full-blown museum at the Maroubra home in honour of the Bee Gees.

"The Bee Gees are part of our nation's musical history and they deserve this honour."
