| Posted by: CrimeSeen | | Hey,
Found my way to this forum... been lookin around on the web for cool communities to discuss all sorts of things. Never quite knew it all existed until recently.
Anyways, wondering what kind of tv shows people watch here religiously - as in can't miss an episode. I like just about everything having to do with crime - cops, CSI, forensic files, I detective, 24!!!. Cable networks have been upping the ante as well, don't leave them out of the mix. What are your favorites this season? | | Reply To this Message

My must see TV list is this, and in no particular order:
E.R.
Lost
American Idol
Carnivale | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: HECK! | | Hey CrimeSeen, good thread.
My list is a bit lengthy, but oh well...
24 - for my money, best show on television.
Scrubs - totally hilarious. Criminally underrated.
South Park - still painfully funny.
The Simpsons - the past few seasons have been hit & miss, but it hasn't gotten stale after all these years.
The Apprentice - Trump is the man.
Fear Factor - hot chicks eating pig anus, how can you go wrong.
Rescue Me - on hiatus, first season wrapped last year. Great new show, can't wait until it comes back.
Battlestar Gallactica - this one sucked me in. Not only great sci-fi, but great drama, action, everything.
Yes, Dear - I just started watching this show. It's been on for 5 years, I think, but it's on CBS so I never saw it. I don't know why, but I have never liked any show on that network. Weird.
I really like the new American-ized version of The Office, too. Hopefully it lasts.
And I've been so disappointed in Saturday Night Live. Hopefully Lorne Michaels will come to his senses and take Tina Fey down as head writer. The show isn't even funny on accident.
Of course it's hard not to find a rerun of Friends or Seinfeld.

| Posted by: gaboman | | I haven't actually watched it since ... I dunno, around the one where he got together with Lucy Liu. It was getting funny around then, but I just haven't had time to watch the newer episodes. I'll catch up soon, I hope. | | Reply To this Message
|
| Posted by: HECK! | | You're not missing much. I was a huge Friends fan, and I think Joey started out well, but it's just treading water. But freshmen sitcoms usually get off to a rough start, I'll give it a chance through next season.

| Posted by: gaboman | | Has it been renewed for another season?
I thought Joey started off kind of dull, really. The first episode had a huge laugh or two, but for the next 8 episodes... not so much... Anyways, I'll see how it goes.
Still gotta catch up on about 8 more episodes on 24
I hate how you guys have like 4 week gaps between episodes sometimes... Most other countries, though they get the shows later, get the seasons continuously, week to week with new episodes (unless special occassions pop up)
It's really less annoying that. Perhaps you can pass that on to Mr. Murdoch, HECK? | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: Sierradaddy | | I've never watched Joey (never will), and I rarely watched Friends.
Best animated: The Family Guy
Best New Series: Eyes (I think this show can do VERY well)
Best New Comedy: The Office (I'm sorry Heck; I don't think this one is gonna last... Too bad...)
Best Comedy: I don't know. I kinda stopped watching most of them because they were the same packaged crap over and over, but I did like Yes, Dear when I saw it, and Scrubs is a quirky comedy that is fun enough, though I rarely watch it...
Best Dramedy: Boston Legal, hands down. Leagues above anything else on tv for my taste. DENNY CRANE!
Best reality: Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.
Best teenie soap: The O.C.
Best 80's show: The Cosby Show
I guess that'll suffice for now...
Oh, and best new animated: DRAWN TOGETHER. That show is disgusting and offensive, but done in such a way that not only can I not help but laugh, but I have to watch the next ep. The first ep I saw totally shocked me, and I've been hooked ever since. Adult-oriented, not for kids, check it out... | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: HECK! | | Family Guy had it's moments for me, but I never got hooked. It seemed like it tried too hard. The little kid is funny, the dog too. I'll check it when it comes back, but I just don't know.
I hear you on The Office, SD. I doubt NBC will pick it up... although they should. It seems like if a show is not an instant success then it's not worth it. Cheers was a failure the first few seasons. Unfortunately, The Office is on a short leash because of the horrible Coupling debacle.
I tried watching Drawn Together, and I'm as crude as the next guy, but I just don't like it.
For a really funny non-kiddie animated show, check The Venture Bros. on Cartoon Network, the Adult Swim part late at night. Here's some info. http://www.tvtome.com/VentureBrothers/

| Posted by: gaboman | | Never heard of the Venture brothers, but I'll give it a go. I tried that Hunger Force show, which everyone said was good... I thought it was dumb. But that's just me...
I guess the Office wont last there... could only last if they get writers as funny as the original guys (who they recycled material from for the US series from, it seems). The English version only had 12 episodes and 2 specials throughout 2 seasons... for the States, a season is generally about 20-24 episodes.... don't know if they can stretch the material out that far... | | Reply To this Message
|
| Posted by: HECK! | | I've heard of the Hunger Force too. I didn't like it.
Well, maybe the U.S. version of The Office will use both British seasons at once. I recorded an episode of the British version on BBC America tonight, I've never seen it before.

| Posted by: gaboman | | It's pure comedy. First time I saw it I was covering my face and shaking my head, and I couldn't believe how ridiculous it was... after about 10 minutes, I'd worked out it was a comedy and was laughing my ass off. | | Reply To this Message
|
| Posted by: HECK! | | The Office, right?
I taped the BBC version but I was faded this weekend and deleted it on accident. Oh well. I remember a few pals talking about it a while back, but takes a lot for me to test a British sitcom. Don't know why.

| Posted by: gaboman | | You probably saw Some Mothers Do Have 'Em, Are You Being Served or Absolutely Fabulous at some point. After watching those, I wouldn't blame you if you were turned off British Sitcoms. | | Reply To this Message
|
| Posted by: HECK! | | Yeah, I remember a few people being on an Ab-Fab kick for a while. I didn't like it.
I haven't heard of the rest of those shows though.
Don't get me wrong, I loved Faulty Towers back in the day. I also watched some off-the-wall shows like Red Dwarf and The Young Ones. I also like Coupling.
But, as odd as it might seem, I think there is a culture gap in the sense of humor between American and British programs, for the most part.
One thing I've noticed about British shows is they don't last too long. Not to mention, up until recently, there weren't many networks, were there? Whereas Americans are so ensconced in telelvision that crappy sitcoms can reel off 6 or 7 seasons with so-so ratings. To be honest, I don't know which is worse.
-HECK! | | Reply To this Message
|
| Posted by: gaboman | | yeah, it doesn't fare too well for the Americans when you put it like that. I know what you mean... like... Fawlty Tours had 12 episodes total, but it's considered a "classic" cancelled before it's prime. Red Dwarf is still going (I think), but there are only a few episodes each year. Mr Bean had one episode every year, or maybe a few more. But not very many. Young ones was the same (6 episodes for a year, lasted 2 years...).
I see the culture gap, but being part of neither culture, I find some of the US and UK shows funny, some not so much. I guess most people would describe the English jokes as being more dry, and that's probably true. I think the English are given more freedom to joke about things the US couldn't generally, like incorporating jokes that could be constrewed as racist or sexist (but are really quite the oposite, to me) into their sitcoms. Don't know if the States could handle that... dunno, the FCC seems paranoid...
| | Reply To this Message
|
| Posted by: HECK! | | You are totally right about UK shows having more freedom. The FCC has a major stick up their backside when it comes to anything that might possibly be offensive to someone. What really gets me is this isn't a government controlled agency. It's a private commision that the major netwoks have bowed down to.
The FCC has very strict guidelines and they get more strict every year, whereas British shows have never blinked at cussing or even using nudity.
But I think that's why shows on cable are becoming so popular. The more the FCC clamps down, the more people are tuning in to HBO, for instance. The majority of my favorite shows are on cable now.
-HECK! | | Reply To this Message
|
| Posted by: gaboman | | Yeah, 6 feet under is one of my favorites at the moment. I mean it obviously tries hard to be really righteous, P.C. and that, at times, but I still like it. Though most of the nudity is on dead people
I thought the FCC had the right to "fine" television stations... is it true? If not, why do programs bother conforming to their BS? | | Reply To this Message

I share the same views about shows that just can't get out of the "borderline" category. Joey is one of them.... and unfortunatly OC has been falling into it. I just don't like how its so obvious that certain plotlines are being "saved" for next season... I don't want to be aware that I am watching something that is so engineered. ya know?
Well, t hese are all good suggestions, I will have to see how it fits around all these crazy crime shows I watch. Court-tv rules my TV schedule, lol.

| Posted by: Sierradaddy | | I caught about 10 mins of Venture Brothers this past week. Not bad. I need to see a full show before I can make any judgements. It was the one where some guy who owns a bee amusement park tries to take over the world or something... | | Reply To this Message

I forgot to mention that I watch Celebrity Poker Showdown and the World Poker Tour.

The OC (fox)
The Simpsons (fox)
Family guy (finally coming back, yes!) (fox)
Psychic detectives (courttv) --- yeah, i know, but I enjoy seeing shows that solve mysteries, and this one is just crazy. | | Reply To this Message
|
| Posted by: gaboman | | I saw the newest episode of Family Guy, CrimeSeen. Pretty funny, but I hope the rest of the episodes are better. They bring back a lot of old characters, I think to remind everyone why you like the show. There's the old guy, Jasper, the monkey in the closet, and the man smothered with oil... no Quagmire though
HECK!, I watched some of the American Office now... it's not bad. I may check out the next few episodes just to see how it goes. The diversity day has some funny parts (and isn't like any of the English episodes). I like the "is there another way to say people from Mexico besides Mexicans?" "No, it's just Mexican. Why?" "Because 'Mexican' has negative connotations" "Oh? Like what?" | | Reply To this Message
|
| Posted by: HECK! | | Gabo- that might have been the funniest episode, I was crackin' up.
There was another one where the receptionist chick was talking to the nerdy guy with glasses that no one likes, and his card said 'Chinese.' She was all, "now, I don't think this is true, but some people say you can't drive that well..." and the dude goes, "aw, I'm a woman!?!" I busted up at that.
-HECK! | | Reply To this Message
|
| Posted by: gaboman | | hehehe "awe, am I a woman" was good. I was cringing when that indian lady was trying to enter the office and he's got this lame ass accent he puts on, then she whacks him. But the cringing comedy is kind of the point, I guess
Also the Mr. Brown part: "ah see, that's a test... I'm not going to call you that."
That was pretty funny
I seriously think the English version is better though. The boss in particular has a much better appearance. He has this really goofy nervous smile he has everytime he tells one of his dumb jokes... also they've got - instead of the guy with glasses - this tall, army-obsessed dude, who is more than likely a virgin. | | Reply To this Message
|
| Posted by: HECK! | | I need to find the English version on BBC America... I always forget to record it. If it's that much better than the U.S. version, I bet it's damn funny then.

| Posted by: HECK! | | What about shows that you wish you had more time for? Or shows that aren't on the air anymore?
I used to watch Law & Order all the time, before the clones started popping up. I just stopped, not sure why. People tell me Alias is good, same with The Shield. I just can't sit down and watch them.
As for cancelled shows, I really liked Homicide: Life On The Streets. I watched X-Files up until the last few seasons.

| Posted by: gaboman | | I've got the first season of Alias on DVD, and I swear I'll watch it when I get a moment... but I just don't. The first episode was set in Taipei though, which is kind of cool.
I used to watch the X-Files too, until about the 6th season... I think it started going too far out there for me, and I realized eventually there would be no substantial conclusion (which I read there wasn't, really. Government cover up, same old crap).
I wish I could see the Practice now, which I love, and I heard The Dead Zone is good. I bought the first 2 seasons of that too, but they haven't arrived yet. | | Reply To this Message

Where did you think it lost it? Just 6 in general, I personally got tired of it at about 3rd season, just kept stretching and becoming more and more ridiculous and out there. There are, after all, only so many things you can do with the alien-life-forms-come-to-earth-and-destroy-stuff genre anyway.
