You may remember Unocal was commissioned to build a oil/gas pipeline from Uzbekistan through Aghanistan to the sea in the late 1990's. This little fact gave many conspiracy theorists the idea that 9-11 was accomplished in order to build the pipeline thru Aghanistan. The pipeline has never occured as of yet. And then Iraq happened....and now the mergers of oil companies are occurring at breakneck speed. Maybe one day there will be only one oil company. 
So much for controlling monopolies.
ChevronTexaco to buy Unocal for $16.4B
NEW YORK (AP) — ChevronTexaco (CVX), the nation's second biggest oil concern, is buying Unocal (UCL), the ninth biggest U.S. oil and gas exploration and production company, for about $16.4 billion in stock and cash, adding a valuable portfolio of discovered and underdeveloped deepwater oil assets, specifically in Asia.
