Second time I've seen a report like this. Doesn't this kind of thing hardly raise an eyebrow?

How well known is it that the toppling of Saddam's statue was staged by the US, and there was never any overwhelming support from Baghdad people?

There are now reports coming in that some of the queues at polling stations, reported so widely around the world, weren't in fact polling station queues at all.

News and propoganda and political agendas are becoming one and the same.

Moscow-style news video from the White House

By Daniel Schorr

WASHINGTON – When President Bush was asked about commentators like Armstrong Williams, paid to praise administration programs and policies, he said, "There has to be a nice independent relationship between the White House and the press."

But journalists on the take aren't the half of it. The administration operates what can only be called its own TV production company, feeding complete news packages to television stations, which usually don't trouble to disclose the origin of their reports.

Thus, a report showing Iraqi-Americans jubilant over the fall of Baghdad, another praising airport security as "remarkable," and another showing the administration as determined to maintain open markets for American farmers were all commissioned by government departments, a fact that was not communicated to the viewing public.

The New York Times devoted more than two full pages to exposing phony news reports. Video news releases, you might call them, except that press releases are usually identifiable as to source. The Government Accountability Office, the investigative arm of Congress, has said the administration's practice may amount to improper "covert propaganda."

And how about the stations that run these government package reports on their news programs? The code of ethics of the Radio-Television News Directors Association says a station should "clearly disclose the origin of information and label all material provided by outsiders."

Mr. Bush was asked at a recent news conference about the video news release practice and replied that the packages are "within the law." He tossed the ball right back to the media, saying it would be helpful if local stations would disclose to viewers that they chose to use these reports.

And he added, "Evidently, in some cases, that is not the case."

Between the White House and the stations that act like Moscow television, there should be enough shame to go around.

Wolf-eyes was stating in another thread that the news were filtered. If you add to this the high load of propaganda pushed by the administration you get this kind of pre-digested misrepresentation of the world as viewed from the USA by the common Americans.
It is no surprise then to find people there still linking Saddam to 9/11 while Bin Laden is still on the loose posting propaganda videos now and then. And no country-scale controversy within the population as to how this criminal is still at large while 1500+ soldiers are dead in Iraq along with more than 100000 Iraqis.

Although I hate to cite the CSM, essentially what they are reporting is true. And nobody cares. Look how many responses to this post there are.....three. There are thousands of members to this site....and three care enough about filtered propoganda to respond to it. And I feel lucky that CJ hasnt come over here to rant about freedom. Still, at least some of us seek the truth. thanks, H@ts.

ps-is that 'hats', or 'hots', or 'hat-s'?, or something else entirely?

I would care, but filtered news has always been a state policy. No state allows complete press freedom. The only difference now is that the propoganda machine is more active than before which is to be expected from the current administration.

The one thing I have learned from this mess is that there is no media outlet that can be fully unbiased...and no gov't that allows their press to tell all. All media outlets are politically motivated.

Im not saying that some dont tell the truth (nor am I saying that they do), but I think there is much more that either is stated or not stated depending on the news source. Sometimes I have to dig to find other information, which some reports dont include...

I have begun to hate the press. If one wants to know the truth, they have to dig themselves and search for it.

All governments have an agenda...and who knows anymore who's story is correct?

I just kind of gave on up finding that truth long ago because I dont know where that truth lies anymore in this situation.

I just don't watch TV.

I wish I could spread propaganda on TV. That repeats over and over "TURN OFF YOUR TV TURN OFF YOUR TV TURN OFF YOUR TV"

maybe it would sink in after a while. A nation of non-TV watchers would quickly reduce the effectiveness of propaganda.

After 9-11 I cancelled my cable for two entire years. I was sick of the "news." There is a mountain between my house and the towers so I literally do not receive any signal without cable or satellite. I didn't miss anything.

Stopped watching news for about 6 days now.
Caught a glimpse of about 2 minutes of news just to see.
Of course, it was the Shiavo case and the people seemed vacuous to me.

I'm not cancelling my cable this time...I enjoy movies.

And my job keeps me tethered to a 2 way satellite pager that gives me straight shot news, no baloney, if I get nosy. And its more accurate and round the world than any American media.

If you're really interested in the "truth" or at least close to it, I recommend

If you can discern information from disinformation....it could be a way to go.
Because, let's face it, intelligence is all about picking through the muck for a garnet stone.

What I meant by not caring is that I do not care for revelations like the ones H@ts posted. But I do care about staying as unbiased as possible. I read different reports on the same incidents and try to form my own conclusions based on my knowledge and common sense.

I agree with what you said about the press. Sometimes they do tell the truth, but that is when telling the truth is more advantageous.

Press bias seems to be a universal problem. We have to consider "more or less" biased media sources as well as informations posted in this forum to make an opinion of our own. The stake is to separate the grain from the straw in all cases.

I completely agree. It is quite natural for the people in power to keep their position, and the media is the biggest outlet of selective (mis)information. Therefore, it is the responsibility of the person to use their judgment and be receptive to alternate ideas.

One solution is to shut out the media, then when things happen, you can have more clarity in situations because you haven't been fed the propaganda in advance.
Or just watch and read the news with the attitude of "well, what are they trying to pull over my eyes this time?" Because it's mostly just smoke and mirrors to take people away from what is really happening.
Every once in a while they *accidentally* leak something that was true...and you won't ever see it again.
Those types of things I make a mental note of.

I opt for the second option because the first one can result in a lack of information (except that I don't watch TV). I take everything with a grain of salt, especially those reports that are obviously lopsided.

I am in an overload situation now...so I am opting for the first option...I'll come out of it eventually.

I don't watch the news. Quite honestly what keeps me up to date is INR.
The only use my tv has is for entertainment purposes, like cartoons and movies.
