Bush Role in Schiavo Case Bothers Right
The Associated Press
WASHINGTON - Not all conservatives are happy with the decision by Congress and President Bush to intervene in the Terri Schiavo case. Some leaders said Tuesday the new law allowing a federal court review of the case is an example of the big government they have always opposed.
"To simply say that the 'culture of life,' or whatever you call it means that we don't have to pay attention to the principles of federalism or separation of powers is certainly not a conservative viewpoint," said former Rep. Bob Barr, R-Ga.
Allan Lichtman, who chairs the history department at American University in Washington, said the intervention of Congress and Bush to try to overturn the decision by Schiavo's husband not to prolong her life is the antithesis of several conservative principles.
"It contradicts a lot of what those behind it say they believe: the sanctity of the family, the sacred bond between husband and wife, the ability of all of us to make private decisions without the hand of government intervening, deference to states and localities as opposed to the centralized government," said Lichtman.
Terri Schiavo suffered brain damage in 1990 when her heart stopped briefly. She can breathe on her own, but has relied on a feeding tube to keep her alive since.
The feeding tube was removed Friday under a Florida court order, but Congress passed a law Monday requiring a federal court review of the case in the hope that the judge hearing it would order the tube reinserted. U.S. District Court Judge James Whittemore of Tampa rejected the plea of Schiavo's parents to do that.
The case evolved into a cause for social "right to life" conservatives who oppose abortion and euthanasia. Bush justified the action, saying the case was complex but that it was better to err on the side of life.
But Republican Sen. John Warner (news, bio, voting record) of Virginia voted against the legislation, saying it goes against the conservative principles of federalism.
"That the misfortunes of life vested upon Theresa Marie Schiavo are a human tragedy, no one can deny. I said my prayers, as did many Americans, as we attended religious services this Palm Sunday," he said. "I believe it unwise for the Congress to take from the state of Florida its constitutional responsibility to resolve the issues in this case."
David Keene, chairman of the American Conservative Union, says he has mixed feelings about what Congress and Bush did.
Conservatives "who questioned the wisdom of the federal government reaching down and interfering with the state courts have a very valid point," Keene said. "In Congress, most conservatives have said, 'We're cognizant of that fact and that's why we have done this so narrowly because we don't think there's another choice.' But those who are concerned about precedent should be concerned about it."
Julian E. Zelizer, a Boston University history professor who specializes in congressional trends, said a conservative Republican movement that "built itself in the 1970s around attacking government has become the party of big government since 2000."
"Starting with the war against terrorism and climaxing with Congress intervening in this case, we see a GOP that is quite comfortable flexing the muscle of Washington, and a Democratic Party which is increasingly finding itself in favor of limiting government," Zelizer said.

Burying the American public. Schiavo is another country's most urgent case. Create a crisis, make media deliver political message. Take from the poor. Declare Social Security dead and transfer it quickly over to privitization. The wealthy can take more from the stupid average people who don't know how to save and invest their money.
Don't go Independent Party. They're ineffective over Schiavo solutions. Noticed the two traditional parties have underwent major transformations. The left went right and the right went left. This life-long Republican had forecasted and abandoned their hidden agendas to rob from the middle class and create huge profits to their wealthy friends and big business. Add to pilfering the Treasury, driving the economy into bankruptcy, reducing taxes for wealthy, forcing local property tax increases for average Americans, manufacturing false crisis on attempting to raise Social Security tax and now they're attempting to steal Constitutional Rights from the States, private citizens, women's right to abort and to die. They have successfully drove up medical premiums forcing all of us to pay for Terry Schiavo over the last 15 years. Wonder why Canada delivers medical services without driving the average families into the poor house?

U.S. can learn from our Northern neighbors where they have an expedited way deciding anyone looking half dead.... take them to the morgue. In our country, we spend like 100 million over 15 years, refusing to bury the dead and sending them to meet their Maker. These types of medical waste forces all of us in tripling our annual medical insurance premiums. Hospital administrators, doctors, medical insurers and pharmaceuticals are milking our pockets with cases like Schiavo. When this country takes away the economic incentives like British Columbia with their non-privitized medicine, cases like Terry Schiavo would have ended all the continuing medical and legal waste . Extended-care resident was just sleeping Kent Spencer - The Province Monday, March 21, 2005 excerpts: (Click Above)An elderly woman woke up at the morgue after being mistaken for dead. The woman did not wake up as he placed her on a gurney and then in his vehicle for the short trip to the hospital across the street. The driver deposited the "corpse" in the hospital's corridor for transferral to the morgue and then left.

The 87-year-old woman was a resident of Surrey's Shirley Dean Pavilion extended-care facility where she shared a room with another woman. She was sleeping deeply when the other woman died. (Couldn't wait to declare her dead.)
When a driver of a private funeral home arrived to take the body to Surrey Memorial Hospital on Saturday, a nurse accompanied him into the room, pointed to the deceased and left , said Fraser Valley Health spokeswoman Helen Carkner. But instead of picking up the dead woman, he took the still-very-much-alive woman.

Deceased people are normally taken to the morgue to await a decision by family members on funeral arrangements. The extended-care facility at 96 Ave. and King George Highway is part of Surrey Memorial Hospital.
A Vancouver First Funeral Home employee yesterday said the company, had "no comment." The company is investigating.

http://www.awolbush.com/images/wherewasbush_small.jpg Yeah, but we knew him as Texas Gov. Bush and quickly refusing medical care to the needy... because he won't pay. But if Michael Schiavo has good medical policy, don't cut it off the cash cow. Instead, deny her rights because the agenda is about $$$ money $$$ for the powerful lobbying interests. Big religion, insurance, hospitals, doctors, pharmaceuticals... Bush is just returning political favors. I never knew government works overtime, late into the night... trying to pass laws to take away our Constitutional rights.

http://www.bushin30seconds.org/images/2232_sm.jpg It's payback time to his constituency.... bend over. And 51% voted for this Dicktator. He can instruct Congress to create any laws he wants like The Patriot Act working so fast into the wee-hours of the night.... that by the morning.... we realized American liberty is turning into a Nazis running our government. These 8 years are going to set back America more than 59 years. What was that about Terry Schiavo again? (Want to drown this under humor, Click Below .)

Republicans created the BIGGEST government ever under Bush. Homeland Security is biggest Nazi farce on the populace. Now he wants government hands into your private rights. What ever happened to "Least government is best government?" |

| Posted by: fuscia | | Don't you think that one of the reasons that so many are angry is because of our idea of liberty? Our country was founded by people who believed the phrase "give me liberty or give me death". These people formed our great country to give us certain rights to practice religion and be free from it as well. One of those liberties is right to decide our medical treatment and not have religion or the government decide it for us.
As for Mr. Schiavo, my husband last night pointed to my signature. "sometimes you have to make a choice between what is right and what is easy". Divorcing Terri would be easy. The right thing is seeing that her wish regarding her health is carried out. | | Reply To this Message
