I can't belive the Incredibles beat Shrek 2 and Shark Tale. I thought both those movies did better commcerially than Incredibles?

I don't see how anyone could think The Incredibles was not going to win. The best animated feature is not about box office, but its achievement in animation and story.

The Incredibles was technically superior with their water and fire animation, but mostly because of the physics done for strands of hair. If you looked at the character Violet, the amount of development to get such lifelike hair is amazing.

Back in 2001, Shrek won because of the advancement of animated flames, something that up to that time had been very difficult to accomplish in CGI.

But The Incredibles is also a superior work based on story. The film is able to successfully interweave adult themes like adultery and death into the movie without losig appeal to young viewers. The problem I have with many Dreamworks pictures (although I find them entertaining) is that they supplant jokes and cultural references for story and plot. This just weakens their films in my opinion.

But given those two factors, plot and animation, The Incredibles was the winner hands down.

There is no doubt that Dreamworks is atleast at par with Pixar as far an animation technology goes. However, The Incredibles had more 'wholesome entertainment' appeal to it, while Shrek 2 and Shark Tale did not. They are almost completely adult oriented.

I myself found The Incredibles enjoyable, but it wasn't anything extraordinary. Infact, I think that the animation was better in Finding Nemo. The Incredibles wasn't exceptionally funny either. Toy Story and Toy Story 2 were better.
