SANTA MARIA, California (CNN) -- Jury selection of pop star Michael Jackson's child molestation trial was put on hold Tuesday after Jackson was taken to a hospital emergency room when he became ill on his way to the trial, Judge Rodney Melville told the court.

Melville told lawyers and prospective jurors that Jackson had been admitted to Marian Medical Center in Santa Maria, but did not give details on the singer's condition.

The judge said the attending physician at the hospital would call the court to report on Jackson's condition, and Melville told attorneys for both sides they could join in the conference call.

It was not clear if the voir dire process -- the questioning of prospective jurors -- would continue without Jackson present.

Jackson has attended each session of jury selection since the trial began January 31.

On Monday, potential jurors listened to lists of possible trial witnesses for the defense including celebrities Kobe Bryant and Elizabeth Taylor.

Jackson attorney Thomas Mesereau read more than 100 names, including "60 Minutes" correspondent Ed Bradley, singer Stevie Wonder, CNN's Larry King and Jackson's children -- Paris and Prince Michael.

Prosecutors said they would call a boy who accused Jackson of molesting him in 1993, as well as members of his family and the Los Angeles policeman who investigated those allegations against Jackson. The boy's allegations were settled out of court.

Jackson is accused of molesting a 13-year-old former cancer patient, giving the boy alcohol and attempting to hold him and his family captive. They appeared together in a controversial 2003 documentary by British journalist Martin Bashir, whose name is also on the witness list.

In the documentary, Jackson and the boy held hands, and Jackson admitted sleeping with children in his bedroom at his Neverland Ranch -- although he denied there was anything sexual about it.

Bashir is now a correspondent for ABC.

Bryant is on the list because he met Jackson's accuser at the hospital where the boy was being treated for cancer, attorneys said, while Bradley interviewed the boy.

Jury selection resumed Monday with Melville seeking to seat a panel of 12 jurors and eight alternates. After the jury pool was narrowed to about 250, Melville postponed the process last week due to the death of Mesereau's sister. On Wednesday, he released answers given by prospective jurors on questionnaires. (Full story)

Melville began Monday by addressing a group of 18 potential jurors while scores of others listened from the courtroom gallery.

He started by asking, "How many of you are feeling nervous this morning?" He then said that despite 18 years on the bench he, too, felt nervous.

Melville told the potential jurors to consider the jury selection process something like "a job interview," drawing a laugh from the jury pool.

He excused one potential juror after the man disclosed he had health problems.

After the potential witnesses' names were read, Melville began interviewing individuals in the jury pool, asking questions such as whether they know any "creative people," what their television news sources are and their opinions of child witnesses.

"Children do tell the truth," said one person. But the retired high school counselor later added, "If it benefits them, they might twist it a bit."

Still, the person said, "I came in with an open mind and I plan to keep it that way."

SANTA MARIA, California (CNN) -- Jury selection in pop star Michael Jackson's child molestation trial is on hold for a week to allow the singer to recover from the flu, Judge Rodney Melville said Tuesday.

"I had a conference with his doctor," the judge said. "He informs me Mr. Jackson is very ill with the flu."

Melville told lawyers and prospective jurors that Jackson was en route to court when he became sick and went to Marian Medical Center in Santa Maria where doctors admitted him.

The judge postponed jury selection until February 22, saying proceedings could not continue without the defendant in the courtroom. The court is closed Monday for President's Day.

"He'll (Jackson) have ample time for him to get well, and for you to get sick," the judge joked with prospective jurors and attorneys.

Jackson has attended each session of jury selection since the trial began January 31.

I think it is called not having a life or just being an idiot. He's a man. He's not God. It's not like he has the cure for cancer or anything important.

My company says you have to work if you have the flu.

all he has to do is sit there in the court room.

He could wear that white surgical mask he wears all the time. So he won't spread it.

I wonder if the fever will melt his face.

There was an interview with a doctor from the hospital who, anonamously, stated that Jackson was not ill enough to warrant hospital treatment, it is just a cold and all he has is a bit of a sniffle and a headache.

What an ass.

Yeah, it's not like they won't let him go to the bathroom. How many people in their 40's do you know of that hospitalized for the flu? I think this is a case of his private doctor ordering him to stay.

He had that "heart attack" during the first allegations, and now some "super flu". I think that he is doing all he can to keep posponing the trial to see if the boy renigs or the pressure gets too heavy for his family.
