Paris and Pammy Head to Sundance

Park City in Utah received a heavy dose of blonde ambition this weekend, when Paris Hilton and Pamela Anderson jetted into town. The A-list pair were among the first big names to arrive as this year's Sundance Film Festival got into full swing.

The two blonde bombshells met up at a party for the documentary film Rize, which chronicles dance culture in Los Angeles. But they were far from the only major stars getting into the groove, because Keira Knightley, Adrien Brody and Jennifer Jason Leigh likewise took to the red carpet to boost their new thriller The Jacket.

Since it was founded by Robert Redford in 1981, Sundance has grown into one of the movie industry's most important annual events. It aims to promote independent directors who might otherwise go unnoticed by Hollywood's money-men, and thanks to the success of previous years it has become a hotbed of talent.

With "indie" films accounting for an ever-growing share of the box office, many actors are looking to break away from the formulaic characters of mainstream cinema.

Pierce Brosnan, who has recently parted company with the James Bond franchise, was talking to reporters about his role as a disillusioned hitman in The Matador. "This is the most creative time we've ever had," enthused the Irishman. And Kevin Costner, whose latest offering is an unlikely romance called The Upside Of Anger, was likewise relishing the chance to reinvent himself. "I've got a plan," he said. "When I think of the next five years, I think of individual choices. I'm looking to stay independent."

PARIS'S WEEKEND FROM HELL

POOR Paris Hilton. The party-mad socialite came to Sundance for a little fun but has ended up spending the entire time dodging her ne meses, Shannen Doherty and Rick Salomon. Doherty and Salomon, who broke up when Hilton started "dating" him (and subsequently made the infamous porn tape with him), seem to be back on and have been seen wandering around Park City snuggling all over the place.

On Friday night at Marquee, Hilton was seated next to the duo, much to her disgust. "Shannen and Rick weren't budging from their seats," said our spy. "They were there for Tobey Maguire's birth day party with Lukas Haas and were having a good time." Hilton tried to alleviate tension by "dancing on tables," but it didn't work and she eventually left.

Then, next day, Hilton and her sister Nicky visited the Yahoo! Cafe at the Village at the Lift, where a waitress again tried to seat them next to Doherty and Salomon. "Paris started freaking out screaming, 'No! No! Not there!,' " our witness laughed.

But her ordeal still wasn't over. On Saturday night Hilton, ran into the couple for a third time at the Motorola party at the Red Stag Lodge. She was herded into a private room where she "seemed much better" — until someone pulled a fire alarm and the party was shut down. But a source snickered, "It serves her right. All she is doing is going to graft suites and demanding clothes — and not being very nice about it." Hilton, by some accounts, "has like 50 pairs of jeans" and tried to score a $6,000 fur coat from Escada Sport, but the clothier refused, fobbing her off with a fur trimmed sweater instead.

STARS DANCING IN THE STREETS AFTER SUNDANCE FIRE ALERT

Stars including Paris Hilton, Jared Leto and "Lord of the Rings" pals Billy Boyd and Elijah Wood were forced to party in the streets of Deer Valley, Utah, on Sunday morning after a Sundance Film Festival party was shut down.

Party organizers were forced to turn everyone out into the cold after a fire alarm sounded, leaving the celebrities dancing in the streets at 3 a.m.

A bystander says, "Everyone was desperately trying to flag down the few taxis available. People were literally dancing to keep warm."
