| New Year in New York
The New Year got off to a rocking start in the Big Apple, when British pop veterans Duran Duran joined Canadian chanteuse Avril Lavigne for a special concert. The musical stars had to wrap up warm against the frosty weather, but there was no shortage of festive fun to be had in the city's Rockerfeller Plaza.
A huge crowd had also gathered to see the 1,000lb Waterford Crystal ball make its traditional descent from Number One Times Square, marking the final minute of 2004. A spectacular pyrotechnics display then lit up the sky over Manhattan as 3,000lbs of confetti came cascading down from the rooftops.
Sharing in the revelry were Secretary of State Colin Powell and Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who showed off their vocal talents by joining the crowd in a rendition of New York, New York.
"In my lifetime I've served in many places around the world, and wherever I happened to be the turn of the year just didn't feel right unless I had seen or heard in some way of the ball coming down on time and all of the hundreds of thousands of people cheering, cheering, cheering," said Colin.
