The online movie database placed Lindsay Lohan second with Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightley and Angelina Jolie filling the rest of the top five.
The rankings are determined through search and view patterns by the site's 22 million monthly visitors and updated in weekly rankings. This end of year list is a compilation of those weekly ranks.
Keith Simanton, IMDb managing editor, told The Hollywood Reporter that Depp and Lohan were in a heat for the top spot, with Depp popular in the first half of the year, no doubt because of the success of "The Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl," while Lohan was tops in the second half. What surprises Simanton every year, however, are the people left off the top 25.
"There's Tobey Maguire, for example, who was in the No. 2 movie of the year," Simanton said. "He's in our top 100, but he's not in the top 25. Neither are Mel Gibson and Michael Moore. The data means a lot of things, particularly good will and star appeal and not necessarily success at the box office. But fascination certainly."
