I just wondered how it differs in the USA to Australia. I know our school holidays vary greatly because our Christmas holidays are our Summer holidays, so kids finished last week and don't go back to school until February. But what about work?

What do you get off work? This is me:

24th - 9.00 - 12.00
25th - no work (Xmas)
26th - no work (B Day)
27th - no work (Xmas public holiday)
28th - no work (B Day public holiday
29th - 9.00 - 5.30
30th - 9.00 - 5.30
31st - 9.00 - 12.00
1st - no work (New Years)
2nd - no work (Sunday)
3rd - no work (New Years public holiday)
4th - back to work for real 9.00 - 5.30, 5 days a week.

The people in the office next door to us are closed from today (Thusrday 23rd) right through until Monday the 10th Jan. I wish I worked there!

In America, Christmas and New Year's Day are the only national holidays in the next week. Full-time employees must be paid time and a half, by law. The rest varies from company to company.

In my last gig, the office usually pulled a half-day before/after Christmas and New Year's.

And the way I finagled my vacation, I worked two days over two weeks. Sick days + weekend= good times.
