I find, atleast in my real life experiences, that people are just not as good to eachother like they are in this movie... maybe that's why it was written? ...I dunno, I guess I'm just a hopeless dreamer, but I should know that in real life, people are just overcome by their bad side more often than not. Ah well... sadly, that's life!

That's why I really like the character of Gollum. He is like all of us. We all want to be good, but there is always something that creates conflict in our minds and hearts. For him it just happens to be the ring.

I guess the same can be said for Boromir. He is a very nice man. He grew very close to Pip and Merry and died defending them, however, he tried to hurt Frodo to get the ring. He desired the ring because he thought that he could help his people if he used it. He realized his mistake and wanted to apologize to Frodo and make things better again. I thought it was nice that he confessed his desire and what he did to Frodo to Aragorn before he died.

sam is the perfect friend...he is non-judgemental, always willing to help, sticks by frodo's side even when he knows that frodo is making a mistake (the part about gollum wanting to kill them in the third movie)
he is my fav character!

I am blessed to have a friend like Sam...I know that if it ever came to be, she also would walk into the fires of hell with me. Going through something great and terrible together makes these kinds of friendships possible. Sam and Frodo had been through a lot.

Make a movie all about the life story of Gollum!!! Include the Hobbit! With the whole story with Bilbo Baggins! I always hated that cartoon version of the Hobbit when I was a kid, (they made Gollum really fish-like), but that story was pretty cool, I mean it seems like everyone I know had to read that book in Jr. High!

I never saw the cartoon version of the hobbit. I didn't like fantasy adventure stories when I was a kid. *gasp!* The first time I read the series I didn't understand it, and didn't like it. I was about 15. I didn't start getting into it until I was in my 20s.

Hey along those lines anyone ever read the Chronicles of Narnia??? Great movies and books!!!

Yes, my husband bought me the books for Christmas. I had read them as a kid and wanted them in my collection. I have only watched "The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe". We are so off topic by the way.

On topic ? I don't think Elrond is too old to be an Elf. I think he is the upper range limit.

I hate C.S. Lewis! He is too religious for me! He writes a lot of Christianity books and the Narnia books just lend to that...granted not on the same lines...but still....

I love Frodo and Sam because they've stood beside one another throughout the adventure, and they still make it back safe. **they'd make a really cute couple, BTW! if they were gay** The ending to the last movie though was so sad!! I cried my eyes out!!~~

ah yes...those two worked together so well...i loved it.

That was so central to the books/movies. Sam and Frodo and their friendship. Samwise and his devotion to Mr. Frodo. He did not have the lust for the ring and he only wanted to help Frodo. I think we all wish we had a Sam.

OMG! after i saw the movie last week, i just saw the commercial and Frodo gave Sam a kiss on the forehead!! WHEN DID THAT HAPPEN?!?! I wanted to see that in the movie! Unless it was cut and i didn't notice...

I think it was while they were waiting on that rock after the ring was destroyed? I will bet that I am wrong. I do remember seeing it.

there are alot of things i don't remeber seeing, such as when Gandalf had his stare down with the Witch King of Angmar...was that in there?

At the end of the movie, when Gandalf and Frodo are leaving on the boat.... Frodo is saying goodbye to Merry, Pippen and Samwise. When he hugs Sam, he then kisses him on the forehead. There is NOTHING gay about that, at all. That was friendship.... a deep devoted friendship. More people should have at least one friend like that.

I knew I had it wrong. Mommy brain. Too few cells firing. I just found their relationship so beautiful.

heeeeey! i never said it WAS gay. i just think it's adorable and yeah, everybody needs a friend like that.

Posted by: Shadow Stalker

yeah...i for one am sick of it!! its so not keeping with the intinded spirit of the story.

Reply To this Message

Posted by: Lawless

You're right, Shadow... it does completely take away from the heart of the story.

i really didn't like most of those "diary" things...way too many cracks about gays...yeesh

Reply To this Message

Posted by: x_billiejean_x

sad. not that being gay is a bad thing, i support it 100% but yeah it has absolutely nothing to do with the movie and its story.

That's what we're talking about... it would be one thing if it was a part of the story... but it's not.
And when people say that Frodo and Sam were gay, it would change the whole meaning of what Sam did... being there, every single step of the way, for Frodo.

Exactly Kris. It is surprising that so many misinterpreted the relationship.

It's because there are too many people out there who can't fathom two men being so close without it becoming sexual. Or, it's just that they WANT to see that. Whatever... that's their choice. But, I don't agree with that, at all.

some don't misinterpret it...but they mock it all the same...and i think thats even worse.

Exactly. I participate in a writer's forum, and when I presented a chapter of one of my novels-in-progress (historical fiction, Mediaeval setting), where two men are very close friends, and do touch, I was told this had a strong homoerotic feeling - which I never intended. In Mediaeval times, men did touch more than today (in western cultures that is, you will find more body contact among f.e. Arabs).

In another NiP I do indeed have a gay main character (and a love scene), but he is a Greek living in the 4th century AD, where it suits with the historical context.

Okay, I've seen all three movies now so I can make my official list.
Fellowship of the Ring--Book/Merry, Movie/Frodo
Two Towers--Book/Pippin or Sam, Movie/Gollum
Return of the King--Book/Sam or Frodo, Movie/Pip

And when Sam thinks he's going to die, he starts thinking of Rosie Cotton with ribbons in her hair. Definitely not gay!!!!!

And as for all the kissing and hugging...they are all cousins. I kiss and hug my cousins all the time. We're family. It's affection.

Sam isnt related to any of them! The rest of them are cousins of some sort...but poor Sammie-kins is left out! :-( And i dont see what is wrong with them hugging and stuff...as you said, its affection...they are the best of friends!

My favorites are Gimli because he is the most used dwarf, Theoden, Treebeard and Gandalf.

Reply To this Message

Posted by: Sandy_Murray

I'm not too fond of Treebeard in TTT film, in the book he is fine, but he slows the story down too much with all his 'hoom hoom' -ing

My favourites are:

FOTR - Book -> Gandalf
Film -> Pippin
TTT - Book -> Samwise
Film -> Aragorn
ROTK - Book -> Gandalf
Film -> Aragorn/Gollum

Reply To this Message

Posted by: MistyRainWater6

Mine would have to be Aragorn of course
Then it would have to be Gollum or Sam...Same for the books and movies

Reply To this Message

Posted by: Sandy_Murray

Overall, I'd say Aragorn probably, as the best character, or maybe Gandalf, or Sam, or Pippin, or Faramir, or Galadrial... Ho hum

Someone can't make up their mind! Though I do like Gimli, but he's after Aragorn, Gollum and Sam
