My husband wants a new processor for Christmas. He wants one that is at least 2.5 GHZ (?) so he can play his Medal of Honor games. What ones are the best?

Check this deal out from www.tigerdirect.com

We love their service. Good prices, lightning fast shipping, smooth returns & exchanges. I use them for all my personal, non-professional shopping as do many of our friends!

I use tigerdirect too.

I prefer AMD processors instead of Intel...but that's my own personal preference.

Medal of Honor I believe is a tough game to run on any of the even new technology out today....but just ask the tiger man...1-800-800-8300 and ask for Eduardo (Eddie), k?

(When I can't sleep, I stay up building computers, you see...I just buy the parts from Eduardo and then build build build.) Don't do anything much with all the computers, but it keeps me busy.

Thanks for the site and the tips. I appreciate it. My nephew builds computers, but I wanted to see what processors people prefer. We are running a really old and slow athlon now.

Ahh - I didn't even see the part about the game. Most ciritical point for building a computer that can handle high power games is the graphics board. You need a good 3D video board with a lot of punch, something with an NVidia/GeForce chip on it. Here's a good one that'll make that game smoke!

I prefer Intel processors myself just because I regard them as having the architectural & engineering talent that AMD purchased from them back in the 486 days. AMD began spinning off derivative products and technologies from there, but Intel is where all the core smarts lives. Why do you think AMD processors are "Intel Compatible"?

smartass...

So where's Sponge Bob?

According to the guy at the gamestop a couple a days ago, Medal of Honor problem was a mixture of the graphics and the cpu....and the system board....imagine that?

But Fuscia, if he is playing his old Medal of Honor games...Sean's suggestion for the video card will work.

The guy at the gamestop was pointing out the latest version...Doom3 has issues too.

I have this video card...it's pretty bottom line though...some of the latest games require technology that hasn't even been made available yet.

I thought that was pretty lame...to put out a game that requires unavailable technology.

We are buying a new video card as well. My nephew built this computer, so he knows what card to get. My husband can't wait. SO, if I am not on INR much, we can all know that he loves his upgrade.

Well indeed at 40 bucks, it's an entry level card - but for 40 bucks, it's a GREAT entry level card that smokes the ones that were out a few years back. It's all a matter of perspective. I pointed out the cheapest reasonable computer and the cheapest reasonable video card because those are smart buys for someone looking for a little extra kick in the pants, but not break the bank. Naturally, one could spend $4K on a dedicated gaming system and not break a sweat trying, but something tell's me that's not what she was after.

Oh the video card we are getting is around $200
I just wanted to know what processors everyone likes.

I personally prefer AMD, but Intel isn't bad either. Both of them are pretty much okay as far as Desktops go. When it comes to Laptops is where Intel's Mobile chips have an advantage over AMD, since they use a larger level 2 cache and slower CPU cycles, making the battery last longer.

But since you are going to build a desktop, and if you are planning to buy a processor too, just make sure the L2 Cache is not below 512 Kb. I don't know if they are offering chips with 1 Mb L2 for desktops. Also, anything above 2 GHz should be pretty fast (atleast I hope so -- I haven't played 3D games extensively in many years).

Well I just got a AMD Athlon XP processor. Ron should be pretty happy with the speed

They were out of the video card that my nephew listed and will not be able to get any more in. He said that they are flying off the shelves. After 40 min in the store with two kids, I ain't gonna shop again before Christmas.

I built my own machine with an AMD and ECS motherboard. It's 2 years old and runs excelent with no problems for add-ons like memory or graphic cards.
The new boards are much fast for gaming. I don't do much gaming. Mostly music and graphics editing. I plan on adding an All in Wonder card to allow for video editing soon.

I had built myself an Athlon PC with a Gigabyte MoBo. It's been running better than my father's Dell. It was my first PC building experience, and now I'm prepping for experience #2!

I wish I was like SWTT and could spend insomniac nights building PC's...

Heh, I'm finalizing parts for my computer. I, too, will be building. I've got some money put away especially for it, so my specs are fairly decent.

intel p4 3.0ghz w/ht
Intel i865PE Chipset Motherboard
1 gig (512 x 2) corsair ddr ram
80 gig wd hd(low by today's standards, but I never pack my hd up anyway)
sony dvdrw/cdrw drive (still unsure about that, haven't heard much from customer reviews)
then a shiny new case and other generic parts (keyboard, mouse) that no one cares about

all items subject to change.
