Actor John D. Barrymore Dies at 72

LOS ANGELES -- Actor John D. Barrymore, the father of Drew Barrymore, died Monday, the actress said. He was 72.

"He was a cool cat. Please smile when you think of him," Drew Barrymore said in a statement issued by her publicist.

No information was released about the cause of death or where in Los Angeles he died.

John D. Barrymore was part of an acting dynasty that included his father, John Barrymore, and his father's siblings, Lionel Barrymore and Ethel Barrymore.

John D. Barrymore was born in Beverly Hills on June 4, 1932.

His mother was actress Dolores Costello.

DREW RECONCILES MOTHER AND FATHER AT BARRYMORE'S DEATHBED

Hollywood actress Drew Barrymore reconciled her mother and late father John D. Barrymore only two weeks before the actor died.

Drew's father left her mother Jaid when the actress was only a baby, and the pair had not spoken for more than 20 years.

Last month the actress, 29, flew 58-year-old Jaid from New York to California to visit John in a Santa Monica nursing home, where the actor had been receiving treatment for bone cancer for two years.

A source tells the New York Daily News, "Drew had been estranged from both her mother and her father."

Drew reunited with Jaid several years ago after her then-husband Tom Green encouraged them to have a relationship.

The insider adds, "When John became so sick, she reconciled with him. She must have had a sixth sense, because she came down from Canada, where she was filming, and flew Jaid out to this beautiful hotel near the facility.

"Drew and Jaid came to his bedside and Drew asked, 'Dad, do you know who this is?' while motioning to Jaid. And he answered, 'Yes.' He hadn't seen or talked to Jaid in over 20 years.

"Then Drew had all three of them hold hands. It was very emotional."

Barrymore passed away on Monday, aged 72.

It's so sad that so often it's only at death that you realise that you love poeple and have things youwish you said to them. You really do have to do what you got to do while you still can.
