Group Cites Video Games for Violence, Sex

quote:
Video games that have players shoot rival gang members, watch bare-breasted women and recreate the assassination of President Kennedy were criticized Tuesday by a watchdog group that said, at the least, they should be kept away from children.

In issuing its annual report card on video games, the National Institute on Media and the Family urged the industry to educate parents better about ratings and asked retailers not to sell such games to younger teenagers.

Honestly, this is a no-brainer, but many parents are completely unaware that games are so mature - it's just a "game", right? Sure. Wana play strip-poker?

It should not be mistaken that games alone are responsible for crime & underaged sex - those problems existed long before video games ever did. But in the same way that parental guidance should be applied to music, film & television in terms of regulating what types of things kids are immersed in, games should be added for consideration.

Do you guys have restrictions on what games kids can buy over there? I know that in Australia games like Grand Theft Auto and Hitman aren't available to kids under 18 (in most places, of course they'll find a way to get them though...)

In Taiwan though, 8 year olds can go see R rated movies and play any game they want, and we don't seem to have much of a problem as far as crime goes.

Yeah.

We have a rating system... but nobody really follows them.

Yup, it's not enforced. Furthermore, parents go out and buy this crap FOR their kids at their request paying no mind to the content of the material.
