There has been some petty controversy over a book that I desperately want ended. I don't know if any of you have read the excellent book, 'The Giver' by a talented author named Lois Lowery but recently some teachers have banned the book, many of them sixth graders and seventh graders because of the killings of babies that aren't right or don't fit in or are older. Come on people this is an excellent book and its totally reality. Remember how the Nazi Germans exterminated mentally challenged individuals who could not fit in with society or were too old? Children really need to read this book and also books such as 'Animal farm', '1984', 'Fahrenheit 451' and maybe gruesome books such as 'The Jungle' and 'Hard Times' to understand the horrors of greed and work. We need our children to read controversial issues and let them decide for themselves. When I asked my teacher why we couldn't' read, 'Go ask Alice' because a lot of my classmates were experimenting with drugs, she told me that the book was too exploitive. What do you think? Should we let our children read books such as these or shouldn't we?
