WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Winter weather in the United States, affected by a weak El Nino, will be warmer in the West and cooler and wetter in the South and Southeast, forecasters predicted Thursday.
The U.S. East, including the Northeast which is the biggest consumer of heating oil in the world, should get cooler-than-average temperatures, according to the forecast.

| Posted by: Flutterbywingz | | With the exception of today, the weather here has been spring-like, which is very odd for my area.
During our few weeks of the spring-like weather, I started noticing insects that usually start to appear at the beginning of spring and disappear in the autumn. They did disappear for a while until the weather decided to trick them. Now they are crawling everywhere as though they are preparing for another summer.
Several weeks ago, I planted some perennial bulbs in preparation for a colourful, flowery garden next spring. When I went to my garden to gather the autumn leaves this morning, I noticed that my perennials are starting to sprout.
Some people may view this as a rare occurrence and something that is not likely to happen again, but it's really only just beginning. It's very scary. Nature is confusing itself. | | Reply To this Message

What are the words used by indigenous peoples in the Arctic for "hornet," "robin," "elk," "barn owl" or "salmon?" If you don't know, you're not alone.
Many indigenous languages have no words for legions of new animals, insects and plants advancing north as global warming thaws the polar ice and lets forests creep over tundra. |

Eight Arctic countries will make scant promises to slow a rapid thaw of the region linked to global warming at a meeting in Iceland on Wednesday after U.S. opposition to firmer action, delegates said.
A draft policy document to be adopted by foreign ministers at the Arctic Council makes no common call, for instance, to cut emissions of greenhouse gases widely blamed for warming the Arctic twice as fast as the rest of the globe. |
