Is anyone else reading A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket?
Thoughts? Opinions?

Let me know if it is good. I may put it on my Christmas List. My husband likes to get me book series at Christmas. This year, I don't know what to put on the book list.

Well, to be honest with you, the books are only o.k. in my opinion. But, (and I know I am going to make a lot of people upset here), I am not a sci-fi or fantasy type person (eg: not a fan of LOTR). Not that these books are like LOTR, but they remind me of it in some way.
I am sure a lot of people will LOVE these books, I just find them o.k.
They are amusing to read, but a little odd and frustrating.
My best advice is to pick one up at a book store and read the 1st chapter (short chapters) or at least a couple of pages to get a feel for yourself.
Let me know what you think.

I've read the first book and finished it in 2 hours. I started the second book, but real life has gotten me sidetracked so I haven't gotten back to it. Some HP friends recommended them to me to cheer me up when I was going through post election depression.

From what I've seen so far, the books aren't that bad. They're very simple and easy to read. They don't require much thought or analysis. Just very sweet stories. I have vacation days coming up soon so hopefully I can get back to them. I wouldn't really compare them to LOTR. And, unless something changes, after the second book I wouldn't really call them sci-fi or fantasy. I thought they were just adventure books.

I see what maxwell says about depressing though. "Gaboman stumbled slowly to the horrible candy machine and bought a disgusting looking snickers bar, which he gagged on while he tried to chew the awful chocolate...."

I still am interested in reading them though but I'll wait for the movie.

You're right. I guess I shouldn't have compared them to LOTR or sci-fi, but, to me, it is definately part fantasy.
Like I said...not too bad of books, just depressing and not at all encouraging. (After teaching all day in a rough school system and hearing about bad things that happen to children, the last thing I want to do is read a book about bad things that happen to children, whether it be fact or fantasy so I guess I am a little biased.)
On the other hand, I am not the type of person to read "uplifting, make-you-feel-good" type books either so I don't want you to think I am preaching...
Even though they are not my type of books, I do find myself still reading them, however, just to see....so I guess you can say they are addicting...

P.S.- Gaboman... tell the truth. Are you Lemony Snicket? You seem to have nailed it on the head!
