BRITNEY Spears may be a favourite with FHM readers, but rival publication Maxim couldn't even place her inside the top 35 of its 100 sexiest women poll.

Britney came in a lowly No.36 on the recently released Maxim poll, which was topped by reality TV star and singer Jessica Simpson.

Simpson, whose "blonde" ways have become the stuff of hilarity for Newlyweds viewers around the world, said she was delighted with the verdict, but couldn't comment without making a gaffe of sorts.

"It's nice to get the stamp of approval from the boys," she said. "It's way better than being No. 101."

Australia's female sex symbols fared terribly, with only three making it onto the list.

The highest of them, Ally MacBeal star Portia de Rossi at No.24, is barely even Australian anymore.

Kylie Minogue was the next best from down-under at No.49, with 21 Grams star Naomi Watts at No.53.

Arguably Australia's richest Hollywood import Nicole Kidman didn't even rate a mention, and supermodel mum Elle Macpherson was also snubbed. The poll's criteria is "beautiful women with careers that are on fire".

One catwalk veteran on the list perhaps worth claiming, given Australia's poor showing, is Kiwi beauty Rachel Hunter, who came in at No.68.

The highest placed antipodean was South African Oscar winner Charlize Theron, but even her stunning looks only got her to No.43 on an unforgiving chart.

So who made the top 10? Simpson beat off Beyonce Knowles, Christina Aguilera, Anna Kournikova, Jennifer Lopez, Mischa Barton, Rebecca Romijn-Stamos, Paris Hilton, Jessica Alba and Halle Berry for her place at the top.

SIMPSON KEEPS HER CLOTHES ON FOR MAXIM

Pop beauty Jessica Simpson is set to disappoint her male fans with her appearance on the cover of Maxim magazine -- because she's insisted on keeping all of her clothes on.

The publication's June edition is about to hit stands, and Simpson has refused to flash her flesh like so many of her cover-girl predecessors.

She says, "It's different for Maxim -- there's no skin! We actually made Maxim sign an agreement. I wanted to be the first person ever on Maxim not to show my body."

I am glad Jessica is keeping her clothes on. I would lose respect for her if she did, she still seems to me to be wholesome and nice and I don't want to ruin that image I have of her.

Although I am sure lots of guys would disagree!!!!!!!!!

SIMPSON CRITICIZED BY CHRISTIANS

Jessica Simpson's manager dad Joe was accused of selling his soul to the devil by his Christian friends when he turned his pop star daughter into a sex symbol.

The former youth minister in Texas once tried to sell the idea of his then-teenage daughter to Christian record labels, but he quickly realized her look and her sizeable bust was making her more than just a pop singer.

He says, "Her chest is ahead of her by about two or three feet. It gets there before she does."

Simpson then quit his job to become a full-time manager when bigger record companies became interested in his daughter, upsetting the elders in his church.

He recalls, "I was accused of, 'Your daughter doesn't love God anymore; you've forsaken the church.' All of that.

"I was like, 'You don't even know me or know my family. How can you say that?'"

But Simpson does admit that he does regret some of the racy photoshoots that his daughter has appeared in over the years: "Part of this is a learning process. When we started we weren't equipped with how to say no."
