A TINY computer chip approved for implantation in a patient's arm has critics warning it could open new ways to imperil the confidentiality of medical records.
The US Food and Drug Administration has approved Applied Digital Solutions to market the VeriChip, an implantable computer chip about the size of a grain of rice, for medical purposes.
With the pinch of a syringe, the microchip is inserted under the skin in a procedure that takes less than 20 minutes and leaves no stitches. Silently and invisibly, the dormant chip stores a code that releases patient-specific information when a scanner passes over it.
The VeriChip itself contains no medical records, just codes that can be scanned, and revealed, in a doctor's office or hospital.
With that code, the health providers can unlock that portion of a secure database that holds a person's medical information, including allergies and prior treatment. The electronic database, rather than the chip, would be updated with each medical visit. | | Reply To this Message

Let them 1984 Rat *******'s try to track my medical data base after that! | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: Anomaly77 | | OOOH...and ya know what else would be great! We could store other demographic codes, readable by scanners when say, you walk into a store. It could "read" your shopping habits, your "shoppers card" info, your religious and political affiliations, last year's gross income...all sorts of stuff to help businesses better "market" to you! | | Reply To this Message

We will no longer be using money.
Our checkout purchases will be automatically be withdrawn from our bank accounts, etc, etc.
They are already inserting micro-chips into grocery items in an over sea store that maintains inventory control and describes itself when you pick it up.
I saw that on TV a few weeks ago. | | Reply To this Message
