Hilary Duff

Despite her disney roots, duff isn’t afraid to pack-a-punch and let the rain fall down.

Star of the Disney channel’s original series “Lizzie McGuire” and movie spin-off ‘The Lizzie McGuire Movie,” Hilary Duff stars in “Raise Your Voice,” currently in theaters everywhere. “Raise Your Voice” is actually directed by Sean Mcnamara, the same guy who directs “That’s so Raven,” on the Disney channel.

Coincidence? I think not.

“I know Hilary’s mom, so I called her up and said, ‘Hey! I have this part that I think would be great for Hilary,’” Mcnamara said.

It can be that easy only at Disney, the huge conglomerate that is set to gobble up the world, one wholesome image at a time. And along quintessential Disney lines, Duff’s innocent girl-next-door marketing is in full swing.

Which begs the question—is she really as sweet as she looks, or is it all one big publicity stunt?

I think that behind her facade, there is a strong girl waiting to break free. Many compare her to Lindsay Lohan, the sexually-explicit teen rival of Duff, claiming that Duff is a better role model for young kids. Perhaps this comparison is drawn because at only 17 years old, Duff is still just that—a young kid.

But that doesn’t mean that the youth aren’t thinking ahead and there are possible image changes to be considered. Just look at Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears for instance. Duff, on the other hand, seems to be content with her image for the time being.

“It depends. I think that right now I’m doing what I’m doing and I’m fine,” Duff said. “There are so many people out there that are young and working and are so talented. I feel like I am in really great company. So many of these people are taking their clothes off, but they don’t have to do that. They are just so ready to get rid of their young fan base, they just want to be older. It’s like this young fan base are the people that are gonna grow up with you. After a while the older people aren’t gonna like you as much and the next thing is going to come along. I feel fine with what I’m doing right now. It depends, maybe I’ll feel differently in half a year.”

How about a whole year—at least then she’ll be 18.

What someone failed to tell Duff is that as child stars turn 18 they must adapt their appeal to an adult market or join the long list of burned-out child prodigies.

“I feel the pressure, of course,” Duff said. “Sometimes people want me to wear something I don’t want to wear. I just don’t put up with it—if I don’t feel comfortable I won’t do it.”

You go, girl.

Maybe this one won’t shimmy into the adult realm of sexual exhibitionism like Lohan or Spears. Will she be able to transition her career into simply a grown-up version of herself? One thing’s for sure—regardless of what the grown-up version of Duff looks like, she definitely won’t be getting plastic surgery.

“The [plastic surgery] TV shows—I think they’re wrong,” Duff said. “Like the show ‘I Want a Famous Face,’ that’s disgusting. What is that about? If people have good reasons for something—if something’s going to boost their self-esteem and make them feel better about themselves, then I don’t have a problem with it.”

While Duff’s outspokeness and confidence rings with more maturity then one would expect from a recently turned 17-year-old, her true age and naivete surfaced when asked if she would get a face lift at 60.

“Oh my God—totally!” Duff said.

Ouch, I don’t think Disney liked that one.

With Hillary’s impending adulthood, rumors are flying that Disney and Duff will be parting ways. If not because Duff is growing up and can’t be talking about the mean girls at school forever, perhaps it’s because Disney is afraid of Duff’s brass knuckles.

Yes, you read that correctly—brass knuckles: the metal rings that fit over the fingers to increase the impact of a blow with the fist.

During the interview Duff wore a necklace that had a small brass-knuckle charm dangling from it. If the small ones are around her neck then where are the real ones?

“I have the real ones in my car,” Duff said.

Could this statement, in and of itself, be the prelude to Duff’s image change?

Let’s hope so—especially because she explained the reason for their existence was to defend herself against Lohan, and we all know that everyone loves a chick fight.

But for those of you who are unaware, there’s an on-going feud between the two teen actresses, rumored to have started when both dated Aaron Carter, brother of Backstreet Boy Nick Carter.

“You know what?” Duff exclaimed. “I can do nothing but laugh about it now. How long has this been going on for? A year? It’s just a joke now. I don’t know her. For some reason anytime I see her someplace, we have an interaction ... I read a new thing she’s said about me that isn’t true. It gets hard sometimes to try and be nice or even try and keep my mouth shut about it. Because its like, ‘I don’t know you! What are you doing? Leave me alone!’ She’s left really nasty messages on my machine, I don’t know how she got my number, and its annoying. It’s negative energy that doesn’t need to be around.”

Maybe this is the reason Lohan got the lead role in the aptly titled film “Mean Girls.”

In the meantime, Duff stays busy and keeps her mind off of the war. Duff finished one movie immediately prior to “Raise Your Voice” while recording her album “Metamorphosis” simultaneously.

“Now I’ve gotten really good at changing my mindset,” Duff said. “When filming the movie, I was at the studio recording. Everyone felt really sorry for me because we were working long hours and then my day would just begin at the studio when I was done working on-set. Everyone would be like yes, I’m working with a kid, I get to be done early. And I’m like ... I have to work longer than all of y’all.”

Overall, Duff seems to be exactly what she wants to be—despite being marketed as a stereotypical virgin blonde, she has her own opinions and ideas that she expresses quite articulately.

She obviously loves her work; when asked if she regretted being so busy, her reply was “No! I love it so much and I want to be able to do it and I wanted my album to be good, so I made sacrifices, and did it.”

Despite her busy schedule between singing and acting Duff still has time to consider what she’s looking for in the perfect man.

“Someone that has no drama, is motivated and makes me laugh and has spirit!” Duff said.
