LOS ANGELES, California (Hollywood Reporter) -- The December 14 home video release of director Peter Jackson's extended version of the Academy Award-winning "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" will feature 50 additional minutes of new footage, a new musical score and a cameo appearance of Jackson being felled by an arrant arrow.

The 200-minute theatrical version of "King" has sold more than 10 million combined DVD and VHS units since its May 25 release, according to several industry sources.

The extended-version home-video releases of the first two films in the "Rings" trilogy, "Fellowship of the Ring" and "The Two Towers," have sold about 5 million combined DVD and VHS units each, generating high sales expectations for the $39.99 extended "King" release.

"With even more added footage than the special extended editions of 'The Fellowship of the Ring' and 'The Two Towers,' this new version of 'The Return of the King' is truly a landmark cinematic experience," New Line Home Entertainment president and chief operating officer Stephen Einhorn said.

NLHE's "King" extended four-disc DVD and double-cassette VHS will feature 300 additional special effects shots and scenes among the 50 additional minutes of never-before-seen footage, giving the new extended version a 250-minute running time.

The limited collector's edition DVD of the "King" extended version includes a fifth disc that contains a 52-minute feature, "Howard Shore: Creating the Lord of the Rings Symphony -- A Composer's Journey Through Middle-Earth." The bonus feature includes excerpts of live concert footage of the Lord of the Rings Symphony recorded with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra. There's also a hand-painted polystone sculpture of Minas Tirith and its accompanying keepsake box.

All DVD and VHS extended versions of "King" will be featured in a widescreen format with Dolby Digital EX 5.1 Surround Sound, DTS ES 6.1 Surround Sound and stereo surround sound.

The extended-version DVD also offers four audio commentaries. One is from Jackson, while the other three include members of the cast and the production crew -- among them actors Elijah Wood, Sean Astin and Orlando Bloom and Academy Award winners Richard Taylor (makeup), Howard Shore (music) and Randy Cook (visual effects).

(Top on my Christmas list this year)

Mine too, can't wait....It takes me forever to get through all the special features stuff though. It seems like it is never ending

All I care about is watching the extra footage. I love how they put it in the movie.

Yay!!! Later than usual, but yay!! I can't wait. My Dad'll buy it for all of us to share, so I won't need to wait until Christmas (hopefully)

Yes, this one I am really anxious to see the extra footage considering it being the final and last of the trilogy. Not sure I want the waiting to be over yet....if that makes any sense

Makes sense to me Misty. We will at long last see the work as it was intended.

I probably will as well Pip
It takes forever to get through all the behind the scenes stuff. There must be 6 hours at least.

I just want to see the extra footage added into the movie. I never watch the behind the scenes stuff.

Reply To this Message

Posted by: MistyRainWater6

Yea, that's pretty much all I buy it for. The behind the scenes stuff is just a bonus. Something to do when you are bored

Reply To this Message

Posted by: fuscia

I get bored, but the kids keep me too busy to watch the extra stuff. I did watch all the extra stuff in POA though.

I am looking forward to seeing it. I can't however until after Christmas because I don't know if I'm getting it as a for that.

So is it still coming out on the 14th for you then? Here it came out on the tenth.

Reply To this Message

Posted by: MistyRainWater6

Yea the 14th is when it is coming out here. I take it you have already bought the EE?

Reply To this Message

Posted by: Heatherhobbit

I know some people who already have it (I didn't ask how--I really don't want to know), but there are more Faramir/Eowyn scenes in it, and the movie is much more complete.

Posted by: Oliphaunt

Actually I haven't got it yet. My Dad ordered it, and that means that they posted it on the 10th, which is really annoying. It should arrive on the 15th.

I have it on my Christmas list. I hope I get it. If I do, then I will be up most of the night watching it after the kids go to sleep.

I am very anxious to see the new scenes...But I forgot to go and pick it up Tomorrow perhaps.

All i know is it has the new scene with Saruman, a drinking game between Legolas and Gimli, Gandalf's encounter with the Witch King, more on Eowyn and Faramir, and more in the paths of the dead. I think i know to much.

Reply To this Message

Posted by: MistyRainWater6

You know all that and you haven't actually seen them yet?

Reply To this Message

Posted by: Shadow Stalker

Yep thats right. I got most of it from the newspaper. I heard a clip of Gandalf's encounter with the Witch King on the radio. I didn't really start paying attention till i heard the Witch King say "This is my hour!", at which point the commercial basically ended.

Alright, so all of the scenes were awesome, just as I knew they would be Though the skull avalanche was a little…well you’ll have to see it for yourself….And they showed Aragorn with the planatir, which I was looking forward to I was thoroughly impressed with almost all of the new scenes. The Mouth of Sauron was well done. They even added some more humor
The sad thing is, it is now all over

I can't wait to see it. They really need to work out the problems and make the Hobbit.

I think everything seemed better fitted with the extended scenes. Or at least I think it would for anyone that has not read the books. And for all of us who have...well we just enjoy seeing it put on screen

Skull avalanche=kiddie park ball pit

Mouth of Sauron=Brilliant!

It was good, but I don't think it was as good as the others extended versions. The mouth of Sauron was good.

You know they don't really add much to Sam and Frodo's part of the story. They do however scatter new fighting scenes here and there. Peter Jackson and his fighting, he just couldn't resist

So does Gandalf have his showdown with the Witch King? If so was it good?

Reply To this Message

Posted by: MistyRainWater6

Yes, it was awesome. I thought it was good
Can't remember what exactly happened in the book, so I don't know if it was accurate with what Tolkien wrote.

Ok, I am throroughly and utterly ashamed of myself.

Not only did I not know it was coming out on the 10th here, and so didn't get it until the 11th, I also still have not watched all the extra scenes!! I must have hit myself on the head or something, because this is so not like me!! I must watch them now...

And I shall be back to report when I have!

You do that Pip
I loved most all the new scenes, but I am anxious to hear what everyone else thinks about them.

Ok, i've seen all of the first half and it was pretty good! I like all the extended scenes.

I agree with you, Misty...the skulls were a bit...hmmm...

But I did like the bt where Gimli was trying to blow the ghostly things away. That had me in stitches! Now getting ready to watch the second half. Yay!

Reply To this Message

Posted by: MistyRainWater6

Yes all the new scenes with the dead people are awesome, and that scene was histarical

Seems like neither one of us can put the skull avalanche into words.

Dang it your spoiling it for those of us who haven't seen it. yes believe it or not, I don't own it yet. I'm expecting i'll get either tomorrow or the next day, when i open presents.

The Mouth of Sauron was great! His mouth was just so....intriguing! I couldn't stop watching it. Wow, that sounds strange...

I like the bit with Frodo and Sam with the orcs. That was good.

Is it just me, or do all the lines that Merry says in the extended parts sound...fake? Like he was just reading them off the script. Maybe it's just me, but some of the things just don't sound right coming from him...

The Mouth of Sauron was great, loved it. I thought it was rather interesting how it kept smiling

I thought the same thing about Merry's new lines...A select few of them were alright...But some of them it was almost like he didn't know what he was suppose to say. We all know he is a better actor then that.

Reply To this Message

Posted by: peregr!n

Yeah. I liked him fighting though

And Pippin's scene with Faramir why didn't they leave that in the movie?!?!? It rocked!

Reply To this Message

Posted by: MistyRainWater6

Yea...and when they showed how Aragorn and the dead dudes boarded the ships. That was one of my favorites
They just take the scenes out of the movie so we have to buy it twice
But yea...it definetly works

The Mouth of Sauron was very nice, excepting the fact that his head was removed. I think Gandalf's power show from the book would have been better.

I'm glad they finally showed how that orc commander got axed. The Witch King's "battle" with Gandalf was superb, though honestly, I think they made him a bit to powerful. But twas still cool to see.

Amd yes I have to agree, a large part of Merry's lines seemed forced. Some fit, but not most of them. And uhm...avalanche of skulls...hmm..yeah.

And the more I hear him speak, the more I dislike Orlando's role as Legolas. He just doesn't sound right. Elrond didn't look right, but he sounded right. Vice Versa for Legolas.

All in all though, definitely worth the extra money.

Gimli's parts in the etended edition were comical and Enjoyable. I liked the drinking contest.

Saruman died well but it still was a bit too soon. The extended pelinor fields were enjoyable and I still love the totally annoyed look Theoden gives the Witchking.

I have to agree with all of this post. I did not like how powerful the witchking was against Gandalf.

I did really enjoy the extra footage. I did like that Theoden got extra lines in the scene with Saruman. He was wonderful and it showed a lot about his character.
