| April 23, 2003 - Shigeru Miyamoto has been talking about this one since the original came out, but at long last Pikmin 2 has been revealed to the public. Judging by the screens and details, the new game seems to offer up all the gaming of the original with a whole slew of new elements that should please all fans of the series.
First up is a new character who joins Captain Olimar from the original. This character, Loojie, acts as an assistant to Olimar as the two attempt to clear the 10,000 pkos debt of their company. You'll be able to alternate between the characters when playing the game, although specifics have yet to be revealed.
Outside of the second main character, it seems that there will be additional colors of Pikmin on offer. Screenshots show the red, blue and yellow colored critters we've become used to, but they also show purple and white Pikmin! Pikmin aren't the only thing increasing though, as the game will feature 60 different types of enemies!
Other additions include a greater number of items, random undergroundF dungeons and split screen two player play. Nintendo mentions that this latter mode features cooperative play.
Finally, a feature that will certainly please many. For this sequel, Nintendo has done away with time limits that many felt were a problem with the original. You'll be able to play at your own leisure in Pikmin 2.
A Japanese release date is set for some time in the future, and we presume an America release date will follow some time even further in the future.

Nintendo has today updated its official E3 Web site with information on Pikmin 2, the sequel to Shigeru Miyamoto's innovative real-time strategy game that was released back in 2001. Players will once again assume the role of Olimar, who, this time around, has deliberately returned to the planet inhabited by the Pikmin rather than crash-landing on it. The reason for his return is that the company he works for is going bankrupt, and so, along with his assistant, he's hoping to clear the debt of 10,000 pokos by enlisting the help of the Pikmin to salvage treasure buried on their planet.
Pikmin 2 will do away with the time limits of the first game and will introduce new colors of Pikmin and cooperative play for two players. In the single-player game, players will be able to alternate between controlling Olimar and his currently unnamed assistant. We'll bring you more information on Pikmin 2 when we report live from E3 in LA next month.
