Teen rocker Avril Lavigne reportedly has gotten engaged to her Sum 41 star boyfriend Deryck Whibley after a whirlwind romance.
The 19-year-old singer has been secretly dating fellow Canadian Whibley, 24, since the beginning of the year and was annoyed when their relationship was outed following the publication of photographs of the pair canoodling on a sun lounger by a Los Angeles hotel.
A family friend says, "They know they're young, but Avril has been completely swept off her feet. They both come from similar backgrounds and have been drawn together amongst the false celebrity world.
"They are both fiercely private and want to keep their love behind closed doors. Both families are very pleased, but have advised them to have a long engagement, due to Avril's age."
Despite her bad girl rock persona, Lavigne recently admitted she loves doing laundry and wearing skirts, adding, "I might look like a tough chick -- and I am -- but I'm also a hopeless romantic inside."
The pair bought a $15 million house together last month in Santa Monica, Calif., only a few doors away from Lavigne's chart rival Britney Spears.

Contradicting reports out of the U.K., Whibley's camp denies that the Sum 41 frontman is engaged to Lavigne. "Deryck Whibley of Sum 41 is not engaged," Sum 41's management said in a statement issued Wednesday (September 15). "Deryck and his friends are constantly followed by paparazzi. The recent 'breaking news' that has been misconstrued around the world exemplifies the media's constant invasion of people's personal lives and reporting of unsubstantiated rumors and/or appearances."
Lavigne's camp says it has a policy of not commenting on her personal life.
London's Sun tabloid got the ball rolling with a report, attributed to a friend of the couple, that said Whibley got down on one knee and popped the question to Lavigne this past weekend in California. The rumor caught more fire when Lavigne turned up at rehearsals for Monday's 2004 World Music Awards wearing an impressive rock on the ring finger of her left hand.
Fans of both artists are abuzz with reaction to the news. On the whole, Sum 41 supporters seem to be less than enthused that Whibley may have taken the plunge ("I hate Avril ... she pisses the nose excrement outta me," wrote a fan on Sum 41's official message board), but others seem content to speculate on what Whibley's bandmates will get the couple as an engagement present.
Over at ALavigne.com, Avril fans are taking a "we're happy if she's happy" approach to things. "I think that it's great she's found a nice guy to marry," wrote one fan. "I think they make a cute couple, and if they get married that'd be cute," added another.
So, are they or aren't they? Perhaps Avril will put the rumors to rest Wednesday night when she performs at the World Music Awards in Las Vegas. Then again, don't count on it.

The 24-year-old front man of punk band Sum 41, who has in the past been linked to Paris Hilton, is said to have popped the question over the weekend. And Avril, a Canadian music star just like her beau, was snapped showing off her engagement ring to a pal not too long afterward.
It is said the couple's families have advised them to have a long engagement because of Avril's age. "They know they're young, but Avril has been completely swept off her feet," said a family friend. In the meantime, the two have already begun to prepare for their new life together, buying a multi-million dollar Santa Monica home to share.
In the past, the self-described "tough chick and hopeless romantic" has always denied there is anything more than friendship between herself and the rambunctious rocker. "The world thinks that me and Deryck are together," she said in January 2003, adding: "(We're) sort of friends, we hang out. But anytime we hang out I either get in a fight with somebody or end up in a tabloid. Something happens every time."

But 24-year-old Whibley's furious management team have released a statement refuting the claims.

OK, maybe we were being a little sensationalist. Yesterday we ran the splashy headline Avril And Deryck To Get Married after a U.K. paper reported Sum 41's Deryck Whibley had proposed to Avril Lavigne, who is heavily rumoured to be his lady-love. Yes, we were exploiting a very suspect tabloid report for our own titillation. No, we're not going to apologize.
But we will clear things up on Whibley's end. Sum 41's management company Bunk Rock (headed by Greig Nori) have released a statement refuting reports of the pop-punk couple's impending nuptials.
"Deryck Whibley of Sum 41 is not engaged," the statement reads. "Deryck and his friends are constantly followed by paparazzi. The recent 'breaking news' that has been misconstrued around the world exemplifies the media's constant invasion of people's personal lives and reporting of unsubstantiated rumors and/or appearances.
"If there was a picture that captured Deryck kneeling, it was more likely him bending over to pick up the crack pipe that fell out of the paparazzi's pocket than him making a proposal — looks like the joke's on them."
Incidentally, Sum 41's new album, Chuck, is due in stores on October 12.
In Avril news, MuchMusic are reporting that Lavigne's long-time guitarist/songwriting partner Evan Taubenfeld is leaving Avie's band to pursue his own musical project. Taubenfeld's last gig with Lavigne was at last night's World Music Awards in Las Vegas.

"She was manic -- running around the party and acting like a real rock 'n' roll chick. Doug took a shine to her and they seemed to hit off straight away. They left together at about 2:30 a.m. and went back to the Venetian hotel where Avril was staying.
"I doubt Deryck will be too happy when he finds out."

I would just prefer to have people talk about my music. That's why I'm here."
