Why didn't he just kill her straight away, without thinking? Why did he tell her to move away? My sister takes all the credit for this theory, she thought of it earlier today. This may amount to nothing, but I thought it was a great idea.

I dont know, that is wierd i've never thought of that. mabe he just wanted to scare her out of her wits, it wouldnt come as a suprise to me.

Maybe Voldemort isn't that bad cause he asked lily to "step aside" and wanted to give lily a chance to live but she'd rather die...or maybe his intention was not to kill lily but only to kill Harry.Kind of weird

Voldemort was in love with lily so he went to kill james and harry because he was jealous but had to kill her to because she wouldnt step aside.

Maybe he thought she was powerful and wanted to make her join him....but that doesn't really make sense.
"Oh, I'm going to kill your husband and son....doesn't that just make you love me??"

I don't know. Maybe he just wanted her to not protect Harry...

I don't think Voldemort's capable of love, unless it be loving to see Muggles, Mudbloods, and Muggle-sympathizers all suffering.

Maybe it had something to do with Snape. The whole Snape/Lily thing is going around.
Remember when Umbridge was questioning all the teachers? She asked Snape how long he'd been working at the school and he said fourteen years- Harry would have been one then. It's the same year Voldemort killed his parents. I don't think she would have put something like that in there without the two facts being related.

In a recent interview, JKR said that Voldemort had never known love. Why would he tell Lily to step aside? She could not have become a death eater because she was muggle born. I think he may have thought her as insignificant. As soon as the Dark Mark went up, aurors would be on the way. James was killed first, and I think Voldie wanted to be sure he got Harry in case there was any chance of Dumbledore showing up.

OK my theory on this is that Voldemort was just there for Harry.

Think about it, James stood in his way and prevented him from getting Baby Harry so he kill him.

Lily refused to hand Harry over to him and tried to get Voldemort to spare him but he wouldn't and she wouldn't get out of the way so he killed her.

On that night both Lily and James opposed Voldemort in his attempt to kill Harry Potter and were killed because of it.

Voldemort knew of the proficy, if only part of it, he knew that a child born towards the end of the month would posss a threat to him so he decided to end that threat but as we know failed.

That is my theory anyway. As for the layout of it, I find things are more readable when split up as they are, but that has nothing to do with it.

Anyway, there you go.

I think he did that just so that he could have a clear shot at Harry without Lily in the way. That way there'd be no mistake he was dead. But she wouldn't move so to make it quick and clean he killed her to clear the wall. That's when it failed. Just a thought
