| Avril Lavigne Donates Song To Kelly Clarkson
The Idol competitions are a bit funny. Take the most talented, unsigned singers from across the entire country and pit them against one another in a karaoke battle royal to determine the best. Now, obviously some really great singers slip through the cracks of the competition, but in general, whoever comes out on top ought to be one helluva singer based on the opinions of industry experts and the entirety of a nation.
Why was it then that when Kelly Clarkson finally released her debut album Thankful nearly a year after the first season of American Idol had concluded all we heard was musically and vocally safe, generic pop? Even Christina Aguilera couldn’t inject real life into the Idol construct with her Clarkson tune "Miss Independent."
Now it’s Avril Lavigne’s turn to give it a shot.
Though Lavigne is too hardcore for hardcore and has laid the verbal smackdown on more than one pop starlet, the sometime Napa-meanie has co-written Clarkson’s new single "Breakaway," which is meant to tide us excitable fans over until Clarkson's next full album hits the streets. According to MTV.com, Clarkson feels as though Lavigne’s words describe her own life pretty aptly, giving the song an autobiographical feel.
Of course, the pseudo-angst of growing up in a small town and feeling all too cool for school probably applies to a lot of people, but who am I to burst Clarkson’s bubble? Take this line for instance, "Grew up in a small town/ And when the rain would fall down/ I just stared out the window." I mean, **** guy, I used to look out the window when it rained! Avril, is that song really about me?
The "teaser single" will be featured on the upcoming soundtrack for The Princess Diaries 2 along with super-cute Lindsay Lohan and Ms. Lavigne herself. Clarkson will be releasing her follow-up to Thankful in September.
