| Posted by: sanjimmy | | I must admit that in 'Two Towers', the character that lead the elves to the keep where they aided the humans in their battle was quite the stud elf.... although, outwardly - he appeared more like he was the local elven computer support technician more than anything.

| Posted by: Sean Kelly | | I thought he was pretty awesome.. super-fast with the bow & arrows, inhuman abilities with his strangely uncelebrated leap onto the horse in motion (wow! this move was a big hit with the audience) - and I think his appearance is very becoming of elven folk who are supposed to be beautiful and unaging - quite unlike that ugly fool who played Agent Smith from The Matrix, the Elven King.. *gack*

| Posted by: Dragonfly23 | | I'm very confuse by these 2 posts I think you get teh two char. mix up.
The elf who lead the elves army to aids human is Haldir of Lorien.
The elf who did the jumping on the horse stunt is Legolas, Prince of Mirkwood. | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: Sandy_Murray | | I think I must agree with the first thread, Haldir of Lorien does appear to be a bit of an idiot, despite his 'raison d'être'. I, personally, think this could be due to the impression he left on me from FOTR.
Haldir: The dwarf breaths so loud,
we could have shot him in the dark.
This line aggravates me every time I watch FOTR, even though this is meant to be a humorous moment, Haldir's less-than-attractive exterior and his 'big-headed' arrogance does nothing but annoy me.
It could just be me though... | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: Sandy_Murray | | Oh, and another thing, Hugo Weaving (Elrond) is a great actor in both the Matrix and Lord of the Rings. I find it quite easy to overlook his unattractive countenance because of his incredible acting ability. I also think he (and his face) suits the character of Elrond perfectly, though he does appear quite evil at times.
You should just be thankful Jackson didn't choose his actors for the looks, otherwise you'd end up with actors like Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter) on set. Have you EVER seen a worse actor? | | Reply To this Message

Remember that the races of elves and dwarves have never really been friends. They get along peacefully, but they don't have respect for each other.

| Posted by: lotrluver | | because he cut out tom bombadil, he killed haldir, he cut out beregond, he cut out faramir and eowyen falling in love, he put in aragorn and arwen in love who are only breifly mentioned in rotk, and made sam and rodo split up in mordor. now i dont hate the man on all accounts, but as director of lotr, he could have done a muchbetter job on the movies. i do love him because he made the movies and got the most dedicated actor yo could have in the universe to play king elessar, king of gondor. of course the movies had only been made in cartoons before it because people thought it was impossible and it was without state of the art special effects, and actors like viggo. he made a good decision on chossing orlando bloom, dominic Monaghan, billy boyd, elijah wood, and sometimes sean astin, who are all hot actors that needed a HUGE movie to star in, and boy was it HUGE. i mean, the amount of orlando bllom fans has multiplied itself by a jillion and two from lotr, th movies have become more famous and blah de blah de blah, but my point is that i have a stong opinion as to why he was evil because i dont know about you guys but haldir is my favorite character and dont ask me why because you are not always told the answer in life, because life's not easy and you just got to live with it man! and something that i saw on a sign today, I'M RIGHT, YOU'RE WRONG! any questions.

| Posted by: Shadow Stalker | | uh...what's up with people and Haldir anyway?? anywho
personally those things you mentioned are all details...which, in the long run aren't that important. what is important is that he got the heart of the story right. in fact, he got it perfectly. i doubt anyone could have done them better. and rest assured they will probably have Faramir and Eowyn falling in love in the EE release of ROTK. you must also realize that some things simply had to be cut, due to time constraints and complexity of story...and it is a very complex story.
of course this is just my opinion, which happens to differ with yours. | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: Heatherhobbit | | You can't put Lord of the Rings on screen as it was written in the book. It's impossible. Peter Jackson doesn't say that the movie is JRR Tolkein's Lord of the Rings. He says that it is "based" on the book. Movie makers have to cut and paste, and sometimes re write for it to be good on screen. LOTR lovers have to realize this. Enjoy the movie and book as two separate entities. Yes, we all wish some things were in the movies and other things weren't, but in the end I think Peter Jackson created three masterpieces. I agree with shadow, Peter Jackson really gave a lot of attention (the most important attention) to the heart of the story...Relationships. The only relationship that he didn't focus on was Eowyn and Faramir. Well, we didn't get to see Eowyn till the middle of TTT and we didn't meet Faramir till the end of TTT. The audience needed time to get to know the characters. Then the characters had to meet and fall in love. Come on, the movie would have to be soooo much longer for it to be believable. Otherwise people would be like, geesh, they fell in love fast! | | Reply To this Message

Have you ever heard of artistic license? The movies aren't an exact copy of Tolkein's masterpiece of a book for one reason;
Peter Jackson decided to adapt certain parts of the film, and it is perfectly in his right to.
Take a look at modern art for instance, who criticised Picasso for his abstract representation of portraiture: No one. And a more appropriate example: Who criticised Marcel Duchamp for his rendition of the Mona Lisa with a moustache? Well, certainly not Da Vinci anyway!

| Posted by: Heatherhobbit | | Jackson was inspired by Tolkien's works. But the movies are completely his. | | Reply To this Message
|
| Posted by: Sandy_Murray | | Yeah, the movies were his way of showing his affection towards Tolkeins's works, but he injected some of his own style, personality and imagination into it at the same time.
The films were not just for people who have read LOTR, they were made for people to get their own understanding of Tolkein. How many people would not have read the books if the films weren't released? A fair amount I would imagine.
I think PJ altered the storyline/characters of the book so the small pocket of people who have read the books could create their own ideas, by merging the book and the films together, using one to understand the other a bit better. | | Reply To this Message

Plus Haldir died in a valient way in the books, by fighting for Middle Earth. It was made even more valiant because he was not fighting for himself, he gave his life for mankind, something extremely courageous for an elf to do.
