Pierce Brosnan turns in his licence to kill

LOS ANGELES : After four smashing big-screen turns as agent 007, Pierce Brosnan will no longer be signing on to play Bond, James Bond, he says.

The Irish actor, 51, told Entertainment Weekly Online that Bond is in his past, though he'll "look back affectionately" on those years of playing the debonair British spy.

Brosnan's suave turn as Bond starting in 1995 was seen as breathing new life into the series.

"Die Another Day", released in 2002, was the biggest box office success in the series' 43 years, bringing in 413.9 million dollars worldwide.

Brosnan played agent 007 in "Goldeneye" (1995), "Tomorrow Never Dies" (1997), "The World is Not Enough" (1999) and "Die Another Day" (2002), which together have taken in more than 1.4 billion dollars worldwide.

Producers will have to scramble to replace Brosnan for the 20th Bond film, the first of the new century, due out in November 2005.

Industry media have speculated on Britons Hugh Grant and Jude Law, and on Australian Hugh Jackman.

I don't know who should be the next Bond. All their suggestions, Hugh Grant, Jude Law & Hugh Jackman are all a bit poofy. I think Hugh Jackman might work, he was tough for X-Men and can be more sensitive, but Hugh Grant is a bit too much of a pansy to play an international spy. I don't know much about Jude Law, except about his personal life, so he can't be very good.

Brosnan picks Colin Farrell as 007 successor

Pierce Brosnan, who played British agent James Bond in the last four "007" films, says he thinks fellow Irishman Colin Farrell would be his ideal successor.

Brosnan, 51, said several actors could ably fill his shoes as Bond, which he began in 1995 with "GoldenEye" and concluded with 2002's "Die Another Day."

"But I'll give it to Colin Farrell. He'll eat the head off them all," Brosnan said following an entertainment awards ceremony Saturday in Dublin.

Farrell, 28, appeared with Tom Cruise in the 2002 sci-fi thriller, "Minority Report," and has the title role in Oliver Stone's upcoming "Alexander."

Brosnan said he was discussing a possible collaboration with director Quentin Tarantino, who is considering making a film of the Bond novel "Casino Royale."

If you thougt Colin Farrell was a strange choice, what about this one:

Pierce's Potter idea

PIERCE BROSNAN has tipped Harry Potter star DANIEL RADCLIFFE to be a future James Bond. The actor, who has slipped into the the suave spy’s tuxedo for a decade, said the schoolboy had the potential to be a “perfect” 007.

Brosnan, in London for the premiere of his new movie After The Sunset, said: “For the next Bond, COLIN FARRELL would be great. But if you want to go even younger, Daniel Radcliffe.

“Give him a few years. You can see it, can’t you? He’ll be great. From Harry Potter to Bond.”

Erm, I don’t quite see young Daniel leaving the ladies shaken not stirred — yet.

No Pierce, I can't see it.

It gets stranger and stranger:

P.Diddy's bling 007 bid

RAP mogul P. Diddy is set to put some bling into Bond after declaring he wants to become the silver screen's first black 007. "The world is ready for a black James Bond", the man formerly known as Puff Daddy told London's Evening Standard.

The Come With Me singer, who runs a record label and clothing range, certainly seems to have much in common with Ian Fleming's infamous super spy.

The two share a love of fine tailoring, luxurious accommodation, international travel and glamorous women.

P.Diddy, who once dated diva J-Lo, openly cruises the Mediterranean on his yacht, sipping Crystal Champagne and enjoying the company of a bevy of beauties - undeniably character-building stuff for any Bond in waiting.

However he faces stiff competition from the who's who of Hollywood's leading men who are being touted for the role, including Hugh Jackman, Colin Farrell, Jude Law and Eric Bana.

Earlier this week, Boy From Oz star Hugh Jackman said he was "desperate" to take over the role from Pierce Brosnan.

"There is something very secretive about the way they cast that role", the UK's Femalefirst website quoted the hunky Australian as saying.

"I've never had an official call asking: 'Are you interested or not?' But there's no guy I know who wouldn't want that role- and that includes me. Anyone who says otherwise is lying."

Jackman, though, is not Brosnan's pick for the Martini-quaffing role.

Brosnan, who played the suave secret agent in the last four Bond films, said he thinks fellow Irishman Farrell would be his ideal successor.

Speaking to reporters in Dublin at the weekend Brosnan, 51, said the 28-year-old wild man of Hollywood would "eat the head off" the competition.

Since Brosnan stepped down from the role after the 2002 hit Die Another Day, the showbiz world has been buzzing with speculation over who would slip into his impeccable shoes.

I don't know if a black 007 would work. I don't see why P Diddy can't play a black secret agent, but just not 007.

Actor Colin Farrell Not Interested in 007 Role

LOS ANGELES - Irish actor Colin Farrell says he is not interested in becoming the next James Bond. Working as Alexander the Great seems to be enough.

In an interview with Reuters on Sunday to discuss his soon to be released film "Alexander," Farrell, 28, was asked about a suggestion by the outgoing James Bond, Pierce Brosnan, last week that he get the job because "he'll eat the head off them all."

Farrell feigned outrage at the thought of becoming the sixth James Bond in the series, joking he was shocked by Brosnan's suggestion and if he got the job, he just might employ an Irish accent to confuse fans of the suave British agent.

"The idea of me playing James Bond got into the press, but it is not true. I would not like to do it ... they should find someone the audience has no history with,' Farrell said.

Farrell stars in the upcoming Oliver Stone film "Alexander," which is slated to opened in late November. It was a role that had plenty of action for him as he broke an ankle and a wrist while filming battle scenes on location in Thailand.

Finding a successor to Brosnan as agent 007, the character who has sold nearly $4 billion in tickets since "Dr. No" hit the screens 42 years ago, has been the subject of intense speculation for months.

Brosnan fulfilled his four-film contract with "Die Another Day" in 2002. The next film is not slated to come out until 2006. Others names mentioned as possibilities to put on Bond's trademark tuxedo have been Hugh Jackman and Jude Law.

BROSNAN TURNS DOWN BOND SPOOF

Former James Bond hunk Pierce Brosnan has turned down the chance to reprise his role as the superspy in a Quentin Tarantino 007 spoof.

The director reportedly wanted the Irish actor to star in a comedy remake of Sir Ian Fleming's first Bond book "Casino Royale."

But, despite being dropped by MGM from the Bond franchise, Brosnan doesn't want to damage the character's image.

A source says, "Pierce is flattered that Quentin wanted him but has politely declined. He wants to move on to other roles and doesn't want to taint a character and a franchise that has been so good to him.

"It would have been tempting to take revenge for the treatment he received by Bond producers but he's happy to just leave them to it and get on with bigger and better projects."

I think Brosnan would actually work really well in spoofing James Bond. It seems kinf od obvious, but I think it's actually quite clever.

BROSNAN 'WANTED' FORTY TWO MILLION' TO PLAY BOND AGAIN

Pierce Brosnan allegedly was dropped from playing James Bond because he demanded $42 million to reprise his role as the superspy for a fifth time.

Producers balked at the demand and axed the 51-year-old Irishman -- in favor of finding a new 007 for the upcoming 21st Bond blockbuster "Casino Royale."

Brosnan has spoken of being "surprised, disappointed and saddened" that "Die Another Day," which grossed $456 million will be his last outing as 007, but claims his wage "was an honest fee in terms of how much blood, sweat and tears I put into the role."

But industry magazine Variety's editor-in-chief Peter Bart says Brosnan "priced himself out of the market" with a reported "compensation package" that "would total north of $40 million."

You know what? It's a lot of money, but I reckon they could have gone with it. The movie wont make us much without Bronson, I feel... Casino Royal always feels like the odd-one-out of the Bond movies, and it's gonna stay that way now...

Bond Shortlist Is Revealed

Clive Owen and Daniel Craig are fighting it out to become the sixth James Bond, insiders say. Executives for the next movie will choose either Owen or Craig to succeed Pierce Brosnan.

Brosnan, 51, will not appear in the next film, Casino Royale, after he failed to agree terms. Owen, 40, and Craig, 37, are said to have beaten off competition from early contenders such as Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe.

Ewan McGregor and Colin Farrell were also in the running, before Owen and Craig captured the imaginations of the 007 producers.

A Bond source told The Sun: "They're both good looking and charming, but also have that dangerous edge. We feel they are the real deal. The million-dollar question is which one will get it. There have been lots of potential candidates but these two really fit the bill."

Meanwhile Nip/Tuck hunk Julian McMahon claimed he was also on the shortlist. The 26-year-old Australian, who plays serial womaniser Dr Christian Troy in the TV show said: "I met the producers for a final audition. They told me to expect a decision in a couple of months and they said it was between me and one other person. It's going to be a very nervous wait."

In the new film, Bond faces his worst nightmare yet - having his tackle chopped off. Bond will be tortured by a KGB agent who threatens to castrate him.

Tarantino: Bond Dead After Brosnan

Quentin Tarantino has declared Jame Bond dead after Pierce Brosnan was dumped from the role as 007.

The Kill Bill director declared: "Once I heard Brosnan isn't going to be doing any more Bond films, that killed it as far as I was concerned."

Tarantino has made no secret that he wanted to make the next Bond offering, a remake of the 60s spoof Casino Royale.

But the film is going ahead with neither Tarantino nor Brosnan.

British actor Clive Owen, who recently starred in Closer, is among the favourites to take over the coveted role.

Tarantino said: "I would have liked to dhave done Casino Royale with Pierce Brosnan. Over the course of time he's really proven himself to me as the James Bond for this generation. He can really pull off that '60s thing that Casino Royale would have - it's not just about a guy trying to take over the world, with speeding trains and action sequences, it should be more like the book."

Casino Royale was author Ian Fleming's first Bond book and is one of Tarantino's all-time favourites.

"If they are going to do the book I can't imagine why they won't hire me since I like it so much," added Tarantino, who was at the Empire Awards in London.

The Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs director also revealed that his favourite film of 2004 was low budget British zombie comedy Shaun of the Dead.

I think that it could be the end of Bond. It'd have to an absolute kiss-ass movie to get people over the fact that Pierce isn't doing it anymore and getthem back into the character with the new acter. It also need to be someone who can do it for the long haul.

Is Clive Owen really going to be around in 5 years and filming his 5th Bond film? I don't think so.

The Latest On Brosnan's Replacement

The whole James Bond chat does get a bit tedious - with rumblings about who is and who isn't stepping into the role left vacant by Pierce Brosnan. However, the latest rumours surpass all the wannabe speculation with news that Pierce's replacement is an old-hand.

It's a little extreme to think that Sean Connery or Roger Moore will be coming back to reclaim their gadgets and dinner jackets... but apparently it's not so strange that Pierce himself will return.

According to internet reports, Sony bosses still want Pierce to play 007 in the next Bond film Casino Royale - and a further film after that.

A source told website Darkhorizons.Com: "All the stuff we heard about Brosnan being out is just a ploy from both camps. The negotiations between Brosnan and Eon (Bond production company) came to an end because, in the last year, things were up in the air, thanks to all the organisational changes taking place.

"Brosnan/Eon camps are still going through the motions of bluffing each other: an echo of the old poker game that Cubby Broccoli (former Bond boss) went through with Roger Moore - Moore frequently announced that he wouldn't be back.

"The mood around Sony is that Brosnan will be back. Hence, the reluctance of the filmmakers to come right out and announce that they have parted ways with Brosnan. Sony are not in a gambling mood.

"They could lose more with an unknown actor, or with an experienced but unpopular actor. They're well aware that you just can't place any actor in this role."

So it seems that all those other tall, dark and handsome actors, such as favourite Clive Owen, may well have to wait in the wings for a little longer.

Cool. I think I'd rather see Brosnan do at least one more This way people will know it's his last one and it'll have more meaning. He gets to go out with a bang this way.

Daniel Craig = James Bond

http://www.inreview.com/attachment.php?s=&postid=562007

Craig, a tough-looking character actor who has mixed up appearances in many art-house titles with roles in blockbusters such as "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider", just beat fellow Briton Clive Owen for the role, a report said.

Craig would be the sixth Bond in the official series of films based on the novels by Ian Fleming, following Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton and most recent incumbent Pierce Brosnan.

I belive this "report" is from The Sun in the UK, which is notoriously unreliable, so I am not placing too much faith in this.

I can't see the producers of Bond going for someone who is so unknown.

Grant prefers to play old fashioned Bond

LONDON: Hugh Grant wants to play James Bond but only if the producers agree to make the next movie in the style of the original series.

According to contactmusic.com, Grant says that the recent Bond movies have lost the charm and comedy of the previous movies starring Roger Moore and Sean Connery.

He says: "I don't think it's up my alley unless the films are taken back to their original period. I think Bond looks a bit weird now. If you go back to the early ones, that air of chauvinism works better."

I think they should make Bond more old-fashioned. But I think Hugh Grant doing is too whussy.

I do agree with his comments though. I'm not sure how he'd look in the part, he always plays a... well, bumbling, stuttering moron, basically. Plus he couldn't pull off a Bond.... James Bond, I don't think.

If they go for him, though, I wouldn't be much more disappointed as I would be with anybody else
